      Jane Austen, Public Theologian
      by Peter J. Leithart
To call Jane Austen a public theologian is counterintuitive for two reasons: she does not seem much interested in things public, and she does not seem much interested in things theological. Pride and Prejudice , there are passing references to the British colonies and the slave trade in Mansfield Park Persuasion . For the most part, though, her characters go about their farming and their business, their follies and especially their romances, their dances and their games of backgammon and whist, as if nothing has changed. Soldiers and sailors, when they appear, are always on leave. Pride and Prejudice ) and Mr. Elton (of Emma ), are insensitive morons, and she has no toleration for the kind of hypocritical pomposity that they represent. Nor, in Mansfield Park , does she have much use for the vacuous religiosity of Dr. Grant, who is a pastor only in name and not in fact. This hardly means that she is anticlerical; some of the most severe satire of the clergy in church history has come from devout Christians incensed at the abuses of their leaders. Like them, Austen attacks false clergy not to destroy clergy; she attacks false clergy to defend the true. On the other side, several of her heroes are ordained or soon to be so. Edward Ferrars in

Some thoughts on Mansfield Park
I was debating about whether to post this now or wait until Sunday, but my thoughts on Mansfield Park have been posted over on the PBS.org blog, Remotely Connected . I was thrilled to be asked to do this. Check it out now, or wait until Sunday night and weigh in with your own opinion. Fanny Price is a ninny. (Forgive me, dear Jane.) I’ve tried to like her and I can’t. When I was first asked to blog about Mansfield Park, the editor mentioned that she saw “such similarity” between me and Fanny. I had to stop to consider whether or not that was an insult. more here...

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
Selections Annotated and Explained

Russell McNeil, PhD
Editor, Malaspina Great Books
In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)

    JANE AUSTEN's CLERGYMEN
Address to Jane Austen Society AGM at Chawton House. - 17 th July 1993 by Dom Nicholas Seymour OSB I have no doubt that many of you, whom I have the great honour of addressing this afternoon, were brought up always to tell the truth. I am going to follow that principle now. The truth is that I am so nervous that my knees are shaking as I speak. Assembled before me is a great number of scholars, critics and learned students of the words of Miss Jane Austen, and I warn you now: I am none of those things. What then shall I say to you? What is an Anglican Benedictine monk doing here, talking about Jane Austen's clergymen? The Abbey of Our Lady and St John lies only 2/3 miles from here [Chawton], in countryside which Jane Austen knew well. For one hundred years our life of prayer, study and work has continued up here on the Hampshire Downs. Some years ago I came to the Abbey after almost twenty years as a teacher of English Literature. During those twenty years, I taught at least one Austen novel to an O level or A level class each year. As any embittered A level pupil knows, the process of "doing" a novel for a major examination can ruin your appreciation of it for life. But what does it do to the one who must teach it, who must introduce a group of young people to the delicate irony, the strong moral sense, the laughter and the charity, of Emma or Persuasion I was fortunate. What impressed me most was the wide range of responses to Jane Austen, some of which I remember to this day. I recall the terse comment of the senior boy who wrote a very good essay which began, "Catherine Morland is a nitwit"; I remember the girl who said feelingly in class, "Charlotte Lucas is the

    73. Film Adaptations Of Jane Austen's Novels
A careful and pragmatic (looking at what s actually on screen) comparison of a three of the post1995 film adaptations of jane austen s novels with the film
    http://www.jimandellen.org/austen/janeausten.onfilm.html
To the reader: This is a somewhat modified version of the review-essay which was published in The East- Central Intelligencer: The Newsletter of the East-Central/American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies , N.S. 12 (Sept. 1998), 12-17. I have since writing that essay done more research whose results I now include in the form of small revisions of the text, added notes, and a select bibliography on film. The thesis of the essay is A careful and pragmatic (looking at what's actually on screen) comparison of a three of the post-1995 film adaptations of Jane Austen's novels with the film adaptations made between 1971 and 1995 reveals the post-1995 films differ not so much in historical accuracy (the importance of apparent accuracy in "costume drama" has been appreciated since the early 1970s), but in the use the post-1995 films make of sophisticated camera and sound work, alluring well-known stars, and publicity they are known in the trade as "high profile" films. These are the really measurable differences between the pre-1995 films since 1971 (the year of the first of the modern BBC films available on videocassette) and post-1995 films.
