    Jane Austen (1775 - 1817)
Jane Austen was an English novelist whose books, set amongst the English middle and upper classes, are notable for their wit, social observation and insights into the lives of early 19th century women. Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in the village of Steventon in Hampshire. She was one of eight children of a clergyman and grew up in a close-knit family. She began to write as a teenager. In 1801 the family moved to Bath. After the death of Jane's father in 1805 Jane, her sister Cassandra and their mother moved several times eventually settling in Chawton, near Steventon. Jane's brother Henry helped her negotiate with a publisher and her first novel, 'Sense and Sensibility', appeared in 1811. Her next novel 'Pride and Prejudice', which she described as her "own darling child" received highly favourable reviews. 'Mansfield Park' was published in 1814, then 'Emma' in 1816. 'Emma' was dedicated to the Prince Regent, an admirer of her work. All of Jane Austen's novels were published anonymously.

    Jane Austen
Jane moved with her parents and Cassandra to Bath in 1801. Four years later, her father died. By 1807, she moved to Bargate, Southampton. In 1809, Mrs Austen, Cassandra, Jane and Martha Lloyd moved to Chawton, near Alton. Here they lived in the former bailiff' house on the Chawton estate that was left to Jane's brother Edward. It was Jane's final home, where she lived with her mother and sister Cassandra until 1817. At Chawton Jane led a quiet life and focused on novel writing. Jane revised both Sense and Sensibility that was published in 1811, as well as Pride and Prejudice, which was published in 1813. Pride and Prejudice was an instant success. All Jane's novels that appeared during her lifetime were published anonymously, merely bearing the legend "By a Lady". Mansfield Park was published in 1814 and Emma in 1815. Persuasion was published until 1818, after her death. In early 1817 Jane began to write Sanditon, but she became ill and the book was never completed. She died on 18 July at the age of 41.
    Famous quotations by Jane Austen:
  • It may be possible to do without dancing entirely. Instances have been known of young people passing many, many months successively without being at any ball of any description, and no material injury accrue either to body or mind; but when a beginning is madewhen the felicities of rapid motion have once been, though slightly, feltit must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.

    Introduction
Print this section Jane Austen (1775-1817), English novelist, noted for her witty studies of early-19th-century English society. With meticulous detail, Austen portrayed the quiet, day-to-day life of members of the upper middle class. Her works combine romantic comedy with social satire and psychological insight. Two common themes in Austen’s books are the loss of illusions—usually leading characters to a more mature outlook—and the clash between traditional moral ideals and the everyday demands of life. In most of her novels, her characters correct their faults through lessons learned as a result of tribulation. Because of her sensitivity to universal patterns of human behavior, many people regard Austen as one of the greatest novelists of the 19th and 20th centuries.

A Hyper-Concordance to the Works of Jane Austen One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other. ( Emma ch. 9) It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy; it is disposition alone. Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others. ( Sense and Sensibility vol. 2, ch. 12)

Filed under: Sense and Sensibility 2008 Alert Janeite Diana Birchall sent us an article Mr. Davies wrote for The Times . Apparently he also has written the introduction for a new edition of Sense and Sensibility Best of all, Austen has dramatic gifts herself. She would have been an excellent playwright. She builds surely and subtly towards the big scenes, then writes them so well that all the adapter has to do is copy them out. Austen, we can be pretty sure, identifies more with Elinor. Her wry shrewdness is very close to Austen’s authorial voice, and a million miles away from Marianne’s rather soppy eulogies about falling leaves, which are not unlike the utterings of Fotherington-Tomas. Moreover, Austen lets us see into Elinor’s mind and heart, whereas Marianne is represented by what she does and says in Elinor’s presence, and by what Elinor thinks about her. Whether consciously or not, Austen forces us to identify with Elinor.

The series' newly minted host, Gillian Anderson, has gotten a bit of attention. But the endeavor rests more heavily on screenwriter Andrew Davies: He wrote four of the adaptations to be aired, including the acclaimed 1995 "Pride and Prejudice" miniseries and a new version of "Sense and Sensibility." His other works include the "Masterpiece Theatre" series "Bleak House" and the feature film "Bridget Jones' Diary." We spoke to him this fall about Jane, Elizabeth, Bridget, Colin, and the public's fascination with British costume drama. - JOANNA WEISS Q.
