Austen lived her entire life as part of a large and close-knit family located on the lower fringes of English gentry She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critical to Austen's development as a professional writer. Austen's artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about thirty-five years old. During this period, she wrote three major novels and began a fourth.

The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. She was mostly tutored at home, and irregularly at school. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. Her favorite poet was Cowper. On her father's retirement, the family sold off everything, including Jane's piano, and moved to Bath. Austen started to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. In her letters she observed the daily life of her family and fiends in an intimate and gossipy manner: "James danced with Alethea, and cut up the turkey last night with great perseverance. You say nothing of the silk stockings; I flatter myself, therefore, that Charles has not purchased any, as I cannot very well afford to pay for them; all my money is spent in buying white gloves and pink persian." (Austen in a letter to her sister Cassandra in 1796) Austen's father supported his daughter's writing aspirations and tried to help her get a publisher. After his death in 1805, she lived with her sister and hypochondriac mother in Southampton and moved in 1809 to a large cottage in the village of Chawton. Austen never married, but her social life was active and she had suitors and romantic dreams. James Edward Austen-Leigh, her nephew, wanted to create another kind of legend around her and claimed that "of events her life was singularly barren: few changes and no great crises ever broke the smooth current of its course... There was in her nothing eccentric or angular; no ruggedness of temper; no singularity of manner..." Austen's sister Cassandra never married. One of her brothers became a clergyman, two served in the navy, one was mentally retarded. He was taken care of a local family.

She was the seventh child and second daughter of the Rev. George Austen and Cassandra Leigh-Austen. Jane was devoted to her older sister, Cassandra-Elizabeth, and eventually wrote enough letters to her to choke a horse. When Cassandra, age 10, was sent away to school in Oxford , Jane begged to be sent along with her even though she was too young. Mr. Austen, however, couldn't really afford their schooling and the girls were back home after less than three years. Apart from this, Jane never lived outside of her family circle again . She ended up very well-educated for a female, though. Home Paying homage to a favourite author can be a painful and tricky thing, so please don't suppose that this font, though made up out of characters written by Jane Austen, is really quite equal to her handwriting. Like every intelligent person, she commanded lots of varying letter forms, depending on the way those letters were connected, and their position in a given word. Her words are clearly diminishing towards the end. Her i-dots are flying around a good deal, but of course they never collide with other characters (which will happen inevitably, when they are fixed in a font), and, worst of all, her strokes will sometimes look rather blotchy and sometimes rather thin, depending on how many ink was in her pen at a given moment and had that pen been recently mended, or was it in urgent need of mending? so that it's next to impossible to decide on their intended broad- or thinness. However, creating something like an average image has been the aim of my font, and naturally, this has endowed it with the principal flaw of all typefaces: it's looking far too regular. skip to main skip to sidebar Friday, January 25 Miss Austen Regrets Preview The premiere of the new biopic on Jane Austen's later years, Miss Austen Regrets , is quickly approaching on Sunday, February 3rd. at 9:00 pm. Presented by Masterpiece Classic, it is a co-production of WGBH/BBC and is highly anticipated by many Janeites. The story line focuses on the last few years of Jane Austen's ( Olivia Williams ) life, as she advises her niece Fanny Knight ( Imogen Poots ) on courtship and marriage, and attempts to help her navigate her choice of the correct match. After Last summers biopic Becoming Jane and the controversy surrounding the producers promoting the story with tag lines like " Jane Austen's Love Story Was Her Own ", I admit to being a bit gun shy of further biographies of Jane Austen's life story. From the PBS press release, it appears that the writer Gwyneth Hughes has closely based the story on Jane Austen's letters, and family memoirs. That's a relief.
