Executive summary: Roman Emperor, 23 BC to 14 AD Augustus (from augeo , increase, venerable, majestic), the title given by the Roman senate, on the 17th of January 27 BC, to Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, or as he was originally designated, Gaius Octavius, in recognition of his eminent services to the state, and borne by him as the first of the Roman emperors. The title was adopted by all the succeeding Caesars or emperors of Rome long after they had ceased to be connected by blood with the first Augustus. Gaius Octavius was born in Rome on the 23rd of September 63 BC, the year of Cicero 's consulship and of Catiline 's conspiracy. He came of a family of good standing, long settled at Velitrae (Velletri), but his father was the first of the family to obtain a curule magistracy at Rome and senatorial dignity. His mother, however, was Atia, daughter of Julia, the wife of M. Atius Balbus, and sister of

Augustus
The name by which Caius Julius Caesar Octavianus, the first Roman emperor, in whose reign Jesus Christ was born, is usually known; born at Rome , 62 B.C.; died A.D. 14. It is the title which he received from the Senate 27 B.C., in gratitude for the restoration of some privileges of which that body had been deprived. The name was afterwards assumed by all his successors. Augustus belonged to the gens Octavia and was the son of Caius Octavius, a praetor. He was the grand-nephew of (Caius) Julius Caesar, and was named in the latter's will as his principal heir. After the murder of Julius Caesar, the young Octavianus proceeded to Rome to gain possession of his inheritance. Though originally in league with the republican party, he eventually allied himself with Mark Antony. Through his own popularity, and in opposition to the will of the senate he succeeded (43 B.C.) in obtaining the consulate. In the same year he entered into a pat with Antony and Lepidus by which it was agreed that for five years they would control the affairs of Rome . This (second) Triumvirate ( tresviri reipublicae constituendae ) so apportioned the Roman dominions that Lepidus received Spain ; Antony, Gaul; and Augustus

    Great View, Bad Service
Posted by Morgan from London on 9/15/05
After waiting 35 minutes for a shuttle to pick us up at the port we were whisked up to top of the island where the Caesar Augustus is located. It has one of the most amazing views I have ever seen. Unfortunately the positives end there. We waited an hour before our room was ready and were put in a long, rectangular room that did not have ANY view. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and was on rollers so it moved when you sat down. The food was mediocre at best and on several occasions we called for service only to be completely ignored. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but for 500 euro/night there should be more than just a view from the pool. ROOM: ATMOSPHERE: SERVICE: VALUE: RATING:

The room was large, but not terribly well-appointed; the terrace was also large with a fantastic view. Go to the edge and look down 500feet into the ocean. You are out on a cliff. Franco the concierge and Bruno the bartender are terrific. The owners could be friendlier and more gracious. But i would definitely go back.

Caesar Augustus Bust
Made from highest quality Carrara Marble with genuine bronze plated armor, this Caesar Augustus bust is sure to illuminate almost any room. The original bust was made from marble and was done after his death. Caesar Augustus became the first Roman emperor after the republic was destroyed by the dictatorship of his great-uncle and adoptive father, Julius Caesar. His autocratic regime is known as the principate because he was the princeps, the first citizen, at the head of that array of outwardly revived republican institutions that alone made his autocracy palatable. With unlimited patience, skill, and efficiency, he overhauled every aspect of Roman life and brought durable peace and prosperity to the Greco-Roman world.

Caesar Augustus
Rise to power Augustus was born in Rome with the name Gaius Octavius Thurinus. His father, also Gaius Octavius, came from a respectable but undistinguished family of the equestrian order and was governor of Macedonia before his death in 58 BC. More importantly, his mother Atia Balba Caesonia was the niece of Rome's greatest general and de facto ruler, Julius Caesar. In 46 BC Caesar, who had no legitimate children, took his great-nephew soldiering in Hispania, and adopted him as his heir. By virtue of his adoption, he then assumed the name Gaius Julius Caesar. Roman tradition dictated that he also append the surname Octavianus to indicate his biological family, from which historians derive the name Octavian; no evidence exists that he ever used the name Octavianus, however. When Caesar was assassinated in March 44 BC, his young heir was with the army at Apollonia, in what is now Albania. At the time, he was only eighteen years old, and was consistently underestimated by his rivals for power. He gathered support by emphasizing his status as heir to Caesar and took the name Gaius Julius Caesar. He crossed over to Italy and recruited an army from among Caesar's veterans. In Rome, he found Caesar's republican assassins, Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, in control. After a tense standoff, he formed an uneasy alliance with Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) and Marcus Lepidus, Caesar's principal colleagues. The three formed a junta called the Second Triumvirate, an explicit grant of special powers lasting five years and supported by law, unlike the unofficial First Triumvirate of Pompey, Caesar and Crassus.

Caesar Augustus Hotel in Capri, rated 5 of 20 by Tablet Hotels guests. Enough has been written about the star-studded resorts on the island of Capri to fill a thousand magazines—and still there’s a side to the island that is unfamiliar to the boatloads of jaded tourists ferried in for the day, and the paparazzi-posing celebrities who check in at the Quisisana. Anacapri is the hilltop village, towering above the sea, and it’s not only in the literal sense that it is above it all: this is where the crowd-shy traveler checks in, to escape from industrialized tourism. The views are the main attraction at the Caesar Augustus Hotel; one imagines that Caesar himself would not settle for a cliffside hotel any less than a thousand feet above the Bay of Naples. The “infinity pool” is by now a familiar concept, but from this high perch it regains much of its novelty, and it’s easy to feel as tall as Mount Vesuvius from here.

Suetonius, The Lives of the Caesars
    The Life of Augustus
    There are many indications that the Octavian family was in days of old a distinguished one at Velitrae; for not only was a street in the most frequented part of town long ago called Octavian, but an altar was shown there besides, consecrated by an Octavius. This man was leader in a war with a neighbouring town, and when news of a sudden onset of the enemy was brought to him just as he chanced to be sacrificing to Mars, he snatched the inwards of the victim from the fire and offered them up half raw; and thus he went forth to battle, and returned victorious. There was, besides, a decree of the people on record, providing that for the future too the inwards should be offered to Mars in the same way, and the rest of the victims be handed over to the Octavii. The family was admitted to the senate by king Tarquinius Priscus among the lesser clans;

The conspirators wanted to restore the republic, but instead, another round of horrors followed. There were troops; there were politicians who aspired to Caesar 's autocratic power; and they were prepared to use the troops. Marc Antony, the consul , was now the official head of the state, and his first act was to secure the co-operation of the commander of Caesar's troops outside Rome, Lepidus . Shortly after sunset, he confiscated Caesar's papers and treasury. Having the men and the money, he could negotiate from a position of strength, and on March 16, he announced a meeting of the Senate , which was to take place on the next day. During this meeting, he dictated the murderers a compromise: they were to receive amnesty while Caesar's acts were to be respected, and he would be worshipped as a god. From now on, Marc Antony was in charge of the city.

Busts of First Century Emperors The story of Rome’s Emperors in the first century AD has got it all – love, murder and revenge, fear and greed, envy and pride.
Their history is a rollercoaster that lurches from peace and prosperity to terror and tyranny.
    Hereditary rule
Why was the first century so turbulent? The first answer is simple: hereditary rule. For most of this period, emperors were not chosen on the basis of their ability or honesty, but simply because they were born in the right family.
For every great leader, such as Augustus , there was a tyrant like Caligula . For every Claudius there was a Nero ; for every Vespasian , a Domitian . Only at the end of the period did Rome take the succession into its own hands and select somebody who was reasonably sane, smart and honest.
    Force and violence
What’s more, the empire started through violence and depended on force. Emperors could only survive if their people believed they could outgun anyone and everyone else. If an army grew dissatisfied, the emperor was in trouble; if dissatisfaction spread further, he was finished.

Julius Caesar was a great statesman and a brilliant military leader that expanded the Roman empire and laid the foundation of the Roman imperial system. After eliminating Rome of its Dictators, he formed the Triumvirate with Pompei and Crassus and instituted numerous reforms that would ensure the success and prosperity of Rome for centuries to come. He was assassinated in 44 B.C., but his heir Caesar Augustus took control and established the Roman Empire as one of the greatest in the history of the world. Source: statue.com
