Biographies: Historic Figures: St Augustine of Hippo (354-430)
Saint Augustine was a major figure in bringing Christianity to dominance in the previously pagan Roman Empire. Born in Tagaste, in Numidia, Augustine’s journey to faith was far from straightforward. Converting to Christianity in 386, Augustine had immersed himself first in Manichaeism, then in scepticism, and then in Neo-Platonism. Once a Christian, Augustine became Bishop of Hippo, and a powerful theologian and defender of the faith. Augustine’s theological career was marked by two campaigns against heresies in particular; first, against the Manichaeism to which he had previously adhered, and second, against Pelagianism. Manichaeism was a dualist philosophy, according to which there are two transcendent forces responsible for the world, one good and one evil. Its main attraction is that it can more readily explain the mixture of good and evil in the world around us than can the view that we are governed by a single omnipotent and benevolent God. To combat this Persian religion, Augustine affirmed the inherent goodness of God’s Creation. Evil, Augustine argued, does not exist in its own right, but is merely the privation of good, and therefore is not something that was created. All that was created, then is good, so the view that there is a single, good Creator is consistent with the way that the world is.

About St Augustine's
St. Augustine's is a Church of England church, here to serve the people of Cheadle Heath and part of Edgeley. We moved out of our old building in January 2006 and now meet regularly at St. John's Methodist Church, Cheadle Heath on the corner of Stockport Road and Myrtle Street. As yet we don't know the future of our old building or site - it's going through the official process of closing down. Your comments or questions are always welcome: Use the contact us page. As the people of St. Augustine's, we hope to offer a place where anyone and everyone is welcomed and accepted. A place where people can be themselves, ask questions and find out more about the God who cares deeply for each of us - body, mind and spirit. God offers us healing, peace and meaning, so becoming more fully human.

Letters of St. Augustine

Saint Augustine was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture, and shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian theology. His two most celebrated writings are his semiautobiographical Confessions and City of God , a Christian vision of history.
Augustine was born at Thagaste in Numidia, which is part of present day Algeria. His father, Patricius (died about 371), was a pagan (later converted to Christianity), but his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian who labored untiringly for her son's conversion and who was canonized by the Roman Catholic church. As a child he was schooled in Latin literature and later went to Carthage to study rhetoric, where he became a teacher. By the age of twenty he turned away from his Christian upbringing. He was repelled by its codes of behavior, but he never completely renounced it.

Augustine of Hippo Article Bibliography Texts Augustine of Hippo Augustine was a prolific writer, and his books had a great and lasting influence on the doctrine of the Church. His works were read throughout the Middle Ages and beyond. Two texts were particularly popular: the Confessions , a sort of penitential autobiography; and The City of God De civitate Dei ), a treatise on and a defense of the doctrines of the early Church. It is this last work that is of interest here; in it Augustine uses some of the commonly-accepted beliefs of the time about animals to support his arguments. He also discusses the monstrous races of humans, giving the reports of their existence cautious acceptance; though he says "we are not bound to believe all we hear of these monstrosities" he then goes on to say "to conclude this question cautiously and guardedly, either these things which have been told of some races have no existence at all; or if they do exist, they are not human races; or if they are human, they are descended from Adam." With the respect Augustine had in the Middle Ages, his opinions were taken seriously. His acceptance, though cautious, of some of the beast tales could only have made them more acceptable to later writers.

However, Augustine grew disappointed with the Roman schools, which he found apathetic. Manichaean friends introduced him to the prefect of the City of Rome, Symmachus, who had been asked to provide a professor of rhetoric for the imperial court at Milan.

Calvin defends the Augustinian view of grace in his Bondage and Liberation of the Will , quoting Augustine liberally. Augustine of Hippo 354 to 430 Ancient Church Hippo, Carthage / Proconsularis / Tunisia
Latin patristic theologian and scriptural exegete; saint. Born in North Africa and educated there and at Rome, Augustine was bishop of Hippo from about 390 until his death. The theology he shaped dominated the West until the thirteenth century and greatly influenced the Reformation. His predestination views formed the foundation for various mission theologies and practices during those periods. Augustine's debate about free will with Pelagius empowered some missionaries with the conviction that without God's gift of Jesus Christ and faith itself all non-believers were lost. Others took Augustine's emphasis on God's ordaining of some for salvation and others for damnation as devastating for missions because destiny was already decided. The important monastery of Lerins in southern France, beginning with John Cassian, represented an Eastern tradition in the West which rejected Pelagian extremes but saw Augustine's predestinarian views as a dangerous innovation. Augustine's controversy with the Donatists was also thorny. He rejected their insistence on full purity for any sacramental act to be valid. He abhorred their violence but did not mind the thought of suppressing them through the use of Roman troops. At the very moment when a Punic-Berber contextualization of the gospel needed strong pastoral guidance, Augustine's own Latin culture left him unable to see the possibilities.

Augustine of Hippo: Father of Christian Psychology
Anglican Theological Review Fall 2006 by Charry, Ellen T Classical Christianity is thoroughly psychological. Augustine was the first person to write psychologically by sharing his personal struggle to know, love, and enjoy God. He set up the framework wherein this struggle is the basic issue of human life from which all other struggles arise and into which they resolve. Augustine was the first theologian to articulate the ambiguity of love and the instability of desire. He believed that we are all spiritually ill but can be healed. Among four significant differences between Augustine's Christian psychology and modern secular psychology, the chief is Augustine's insight that there is no psychological problem that is not also a spiritual and moral problem. There are four texts in particular in which Augustine thinks as a psychotherapeutic teacher: "On Christian Teaching," "On Catechizing the Uninstructed," "On the Trinity," and the "Confessions."
