Much of his youth and early adulthood was dominated by his mother Monica, a pious and spirited Christian. Today Augustinians and many other religious orders and congregations still use this Rule as their guide. A Bishop in Hippo (near modern-day Annaba, Algeria), Augustine was an influential leader in the African Church. As Christians were growing in their knowledge of God and Christ, Augustine helped to shape Christian theological teachings, particularly those about the role of Divine Grace and the nature of the Holy Trinity. In the process, he combatted many theological errors. The son of Monica, a holy Christian, and Patricius, a pagan, Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (now known as Souk Ahras, Algeria). He was educated in the best secular schools of his day. As a young man, he led a distinctly non-Christian and immoral life. He lived with a young woman without the benefit of marriage. Together they had a son, Adeodatus. Augustine became a teacher. He first taught Grammar in Tagaste. He then taught Rhetoric in Carthage, and later in Rome and Milan.

Tagaste, near ancient Hippo-Regius, was at that time a small free city of proconsular Numidia. Hippo-Regius and the surrounding area were Tyrian Phoenician colonies on the west coast of the bay. It was gaven the name Hipponensis Sinus; the surname Regius was bestowed on it as one of the places where the Numidian kings resided. Later it became a Roman colonia and prospered until A.D. 430, when it was taken by the Vandals. Hippo had recently been converted from Donatism. Augustine of Hippo Platonist and Christian Philosopher Augustine, a voluminous writer on the subject of philosophy and its relation to religion is considered one of the most important church fathers of old. Beginning with his Confessions (c400) Augustine chronicled his life and conversion to Christianity from Manichaeanism. He is a strong neo-Platonist, and his scant philosophical training is clearly evident from the manuscript, though it is clear that he had a powerful intellect. Using his background in rhetoric, he constructed a version of Christianity from the platonic commentaries that he trained himself with. Some of his other works include Contra Academicos De Ordine De Libero Arbitrio (386), and some of his more famous works like On the Trinity On Genesis According to the Letter (401-15), and On the City of God (413-26). His later works are primarily inspired by the Christian religion, they discuss issues of philosophical importance within the bible, and pagan influences upon society. Some important aspects of his philosophy include the idea of divine illumination, the doctrine of grace, and his ideas on time and space.
