Jean M(arie) Auel (1936-) American novelist who has gained international fame with her Earth's Children series, sagas about prehistoric Europe. Auel's books describe the early tribesmen. Her bestsellers are detailed and based on research but also colored with a captivating storyline and vivid imagination. The Clan of the Cave Bear was filmed in 1985, starring Daryl Hannah. "Clan Gatherings were also a time to reestablish old acquaintances, see relatives from other clans, and exchange gossip and stories that would enliven many a cold winter evening for the next few years. Young people, unable to find mates within their own clan, vied for each other's attention, though matings could only take place if the woman was acceptable to the leader of the young man's clan. It was considered an honor for a young woman to be chosen, especially by a clan of a higher status, although moving away would be traumatic for her and her loved ones left behind." (from The Clan of the Cave Bear Jean Marie Auel was born in Chicago, Illinois, as the second of five children. Her father was a housepainter. After high school, she married Ray Bernard Auel in 1954; they had five children. In 1965-66 she worked as a clerk in Beaverton, Oregon, then as a circuit board designer (1966-1973), technical writer (1973-74), and a credit manager (1974-1976). Auel studied at Portland State University, Oregon and University of Portland, receiving her M.B.A. in 1976, at the age of forty. In the same year she got the idea for a story about a girl, Ayla, living amongst people who are different from her. She left her work in a Portland electronics plant and devoted herself entirely to writing.

(photo: AudioFile Magazine) Notable Oregonians home next notable Jean Marie Untinen was born February 18, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, the second of five children. Her father was a housepainter. After high school she married Ray Bernard Auel and raised five children of her own. She earned her masters degree in 1976 after attending night school while working for a Portland electronics firm. At that time she quit her job in order to find "more suitable work." Research for a short story about a prehistoric girl eventually led to a novel. The first draft ran to 450,000 words in six parts. In the rewriting process, Auel decided that each part was actually a novel in itself, which led to the outline for a series of six books. Her first book, Clan of the Cave Bear , was published in 1980 and stayed on the bestseller list for eight months. The story takes place around 35,000 to 25,000 years ago in the late Pleistocene epoch (the Ice Age) in prehistoric Europe. It is about a Cro-Magnon girl named Ayla and her interaction with Neanderthals, her environment, and finally with other Cro-Magnon people. The book was later adapted into a 1986 film of the same name.

    Queen of Stone Age sex
By Deborah Ross June 10 2002 Jean Auel: "I'm able to go and do some things now. Ray and I can travel when we want to . . . But I don't have any desire for gold faucets." So, off to meet Jean Auel, pronounced "owl'', as in tawny, barn, snowy, just in case you need these things pressing home. Auel writes books. Her books are novels, and are called things like The Clan of the Cave Bear and The Mammoth Hunters , and they're all part of an ongoing prehistoric saga. Her heroine is Ayla, a Cro-Magnon woman. Her hero is Jondalar, a Cro-Magnon man. Ayla "seems to glow with a stunning beauty''. Jondalar has "unbelievably vivid blue eyes''. They throw a lot of spears, sharpen loads of flints, invent the needle and thread (what else is there to do when you don't have telly?) and, yes, have sex. The sex scenes are very much of the "his loins ached with need'' school. It's the sort of sex scene where you know it's not going to be long before "urgent'' and "manhood'' come into it.
