Canadian poet, novelist, and critic, noted for her Canadian nationalism and her feminism. Atwood's family was continually on the move because of her entomologist father's work, which often took the family into northern, sparsely settled bush country. Margaret Atwood: THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF ME THE LANDLADY Variations on the Word Sleep Variations on the Word Love ... Habitation back to the Fat Poetry Book Index
THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF ME It was taken some time ago.
At first it seems to be
a smeared
print: blurred lines and grey flecks
blended with the paper; then, as you scan
it, you see in the left-hand corner
a thing that is like a branch: part of a tree
(balsam or spruce) emerging
and, to the right, halfway up
what ought to be a gentle slope, a small frame house. In the background there is a lake, and beyond that, some low hills. (The photograph was taken the day after I drowned. I am in the lake, in the center of the picture, just under the surface. It is difficult to say where precisely, or to say how large or small I am: the effect of water on light is a distortion but if you look long enough, eventually you will be able to see me.) THE LANDLADY This is the lair of the landlady She is a raw voice loose in the rooms beneath me.

USA , Europe, and Australia. Her second collection of poems, The Circle Game won the Governor General's Award for poetry in 1966 and her recent novel, The Blind Assassin won the Booker Prize in 2000. Margaret Atwood was born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1939. Her father was a biologist and her family spent many summers in the northern bush. She studied at Victoria College in the University of Toronto (B.A.), then Radcliffe College (M.A.) and Harvard University. She began her career by publishing poetry. After The Circle Game she produced The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970), and Procedures for the Underground (1970) followed by Power Politics (1971). In You Are Happy (1974) she explored the oppression of women and became a recognized feminist writer. In Two-headed Poems (1978) Atwood explored the national conflicts of Canada divided by two official languages and cultures. These social concerns are expanded in True Stories Interlunar (1984) and Morning in a Burning House The feminist voice of Margaret Atwood is clearly heard in her earlier novels beginning with The Edible Woman Surfacing (1972), and

Oryx and Crake

Guide Rating - Science fiction is generally served to the public in either one of two delicious flavors. One is of the Star Trek varietythis is a critique or mirror of contemporary society via a comparison to a future, technologically-advanced and therefore improved humanity. The second and far more prevalent kind of sci-fi, is that of the neophobe, anti-capitalist Terminator ilkthese yarns of dystopia play off the fear of humanity's inevitable campaign into the future and away from what is familiar. Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake is an unapologetic member of this second varietya species of literature whose blank check negativity and cynicism I find more than a little bit boring. However, beyond the politics, Atwood's work succeeds on a variety of more immediate levels.

ALIAS GRACE BODILY HARM ... SURFACING Margaret Atwood May 2003 Margaret Atwood has written more than thirty books of fiction, poetry and critical essays. Her latest novel is the stunning and provocative ORYX AND CRAKE . In this interview Atwood talks about her decision to include a male protagonist in ORYX AND CRAKE, her own spiritual philosophy and the application of humor in the novel's serious premise. Q: Most of your previous novels have female protagonists. Was it a conscious decision to have a male protagonist for ORYX AND CRAKE, or did Snowman simply present himself to you? MA: Snowman did present himself to me, yes, dirty bedsheet and all. For this novel, a woman would have been less possible. Or let's say that the story would have been quite different. If we are writers, we all have multiple selves. Also, I've known a lot of male people in my life, so I had a lot to draw on. Q: When THE HANDMAID'S TALE was published, Contemporary Authors listed your religion as "Pessimistic Pantheist," which you defined as the belief that "God is everywhere, but losing." Is this still an accurate description of your spiritual philosophy?

Atwood, whose novels include The Handmaid's Tale, Cat's Eye, and her latest, Alias Grace , is known for her wicked sense of humor and caustic tongue, which have inspired critics to label her "Medusa," "amusing duchess," and "quiet Mata Hari." Margaret (Eleanor) Atwood (1939-) Canadian poet, novelist, and critic, noted for her feminism and mythological themes. Atwood's work has been regarded as a barometer of feminist thought. Her protagonists are often a kind of "everywoman" characters, or weaker members of society. Several of Atwood's novels can be classified as science fiction, although her writing is above the normal formulae of the genre. " You have good bones , they used to say, and I paid no attention. What did I care about good bones, then? I was more concerned with what was covering them. I was more concerned with lust, and pimples. The bones were backdrop. " (from Good Bones Margared Atwood was born in Ottawa, Canada, the second of three children. He father, Carl Atwood, was a forest entomologist, and her mother, Margaret Killam, a nutritionist. Part of her early years Atwood spent in the bush of northern Quebec, where her father undertook research. Later these childhood experiences gave material to her metaphorical use of the wilderness and its animals in WILDERNESS TIPS (1991). In 1946 Atwood's family moved to Toronto, the scene of several of her works. Atwood started to attended school full-time at the age of eleven. After graduating from Leaside High School in 1959, Atwood studied at the University of Toronto, where she met the literary critic Northrop Fry; his myth criticism and Jungian ideas influenced her deeply. She won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and became a graduate student at Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, receiving her M.A. in 1962. Atwood continued her studies of Victorian literature at Harvard (1962-63, 1965-67), reading for Ph.D., but interrupted her studies in 1967 after having failed to complete her dissertation on 'The English Metaphysical Romance'. For a period she worked for a market-research company in Toronto and taught English at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (1964-65). Atwood has held a variety of academic posts and has been writer-in-residence at numerous Canadian and American universities.
