His early work Legends of Guatemala (1930) displays a creative use of Central American Indian traditions. His novel Mr. President (1946) condemns political dictatorship while experimenting with narrative techniques. His novel Men of Corn (1949) combines mythological narrative from Indian sources with social criticism. The trilogy of novels Strong Wind (1950), The Green Pope (1954), and The Eyes of the Interred (1960) focuses on unjust conditions of agricultural work in Central America.

    Miguel Angel Asturias, recipient of the 1967 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He studied law at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala and ethnology at the Sorbonne in Paris. He later helped found the Popular University of Guatemala. He also founded and edited a radio magazine called EL DIARIO DEL AIRE. Asturias served as a Guatemalan diplomat for several years, but he spent much of his life in exile because he opposed the dictatorial ruler. Asturias published his first major work, LEYENDAS DE GUATEMALA (LEGENDS OF GUATEMALA) in 1930. He is best known for his 1949 novel HOMBRES DE MAIZ (MEN OF MAIZE). Miguel Angel Asturias died in Madrid, Spain in 1974. CHRONOLOGY He was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala.     Miguel Angel Asturias Novelista y poeta guatemalteco. Prolífico escritor y diplomático, nació el 19 de octubre de 1899, en la ciudad de Guatemala y falleció en París el 9 de junio de 1974. De familia modesta, cursó la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de San Carlos, donde obtuvo el título de abogado y notario en 1923. Parte entonces a Londres, donde descubre las obras mayas del British Museum. Se translada en seguida a París, donde funda la Liga del estudiante latinoamericano y estudia con el profesor Georges Raynaud el Popol-Vuh , libro sagrado de los antiguos mayas que traduce del francés en colaboración con el mexicano González de Mendoza. Luego en 1930 se traslada a Madrid y publica por la editorial Oriente Leyendas de Guatemala , en que recuenta las ricas tradiciones indígenas de su país. Al regresar a Guatemala en 1933 funda el primer radioperiódico de Guatemala, El diario del aire . En 1945, cuando el dictador Jorge Ubico toma el poder se ve obligado a dejar el país y se refugia en México. De 1947 a 1954, ocupa diversos cargos diplomáticos. Con la caída del gobierno democrático de Jacobo Arbenz se exilia otra vez y vive largos años en Buenos Aires. Después se dirige a Génova, París y Palma de Mallorca. Ocasionalmente viaja a Guatemala, donde recibe homenajes por parte de los jóvenes intelectuales. En 1966 es nombrado embajador de Guatemala y en 1967 recibe el Premio Lenin de la Paz y el Premio Nobel de literatura. El reconocimiento de la obra de Miguel Ángel Asturias marca el comienzo de la valoración por parte de Europa y Estados Unidos de la literatura hispanoamericana como una literatura que al mismo tiempo expresa la realidad de un continente y posee una calidad semejante a las grandes literaturas del mundo. Con Asturias termina el ciclo de la llamada novela indigenista y se abre paso a una nueva generación de escritores como Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Juan Rulfo, Julio Cortázar, José Donoso, Augusto Roa Bastos y muchos otros que constituirán el fenómeno literario-editorial conocido como el
