Yale Portland, OR 97203 Elementary students, educators and the community helped design and build this vibrant learning garden that helps clean and filter stormwater runoff from what was formerly 8,500 square feet of asphalt. Planted in Spring 2005 by volunteers and with contributions from many professionals and businesses, the Astor garden is now ready for celebration and enjoyment. The innovative garden combines art and environmental education with community design. Before and During the Creation of the Garden Students learn about rocks and rivers, and volunteers help create an artistic garden design. This project was made possible through public and private partnerships and significant funding from the City of Portland and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
