John Jacob Astor
John Astor was born in Waldorf, Germany. At age 20 he came to the United States, first to Baltimore and later to New York City . Having few resources, he worked in a variety of jobs — as a bakery assistant, a peddler and manager of a music store. In 1787, Astor entered the fur trade and in a few years became one of the wealthiest men in America. He simplified his business by dealing directly with Native American trappers and established two successful companies, the American Fur Company (1808) and the Pacific Fur Company (1810). His dream was to establish a single trading company with headquarters at the mouth of the Columbia River, and serve the entire American West. Toward that end, in 1811 he erected a trading station at the site of present-day Astoria, Oregon . When the British blockaded the post during the War of 1812 , Astor sold out to them. The fort became the property of the U.S. government at the war's conclusion. Following the war, Astor invested in a small fleet of ships to carry his furs to Europe and the Far East, particularly China. This international trade was immensely profitable, allowing Astor to invest heavily in farmland on

German-born US merchant who founded the monopolistic American Fur Company in 1808. His subsidiary enterprise, the Pacific Fur Company, was created in 1811 following the US government's Louisiana Purchase in 1803 facilitating trade with the West. He founded Astoria, now in Oregon, as his trading post at the mouth of the Columbia River. Astor immigrated to the USA in 1783 and worked in small shops before entering the fur trade. He made farsighted agreements with Canadian merchants and traded with the British East India Company. He systematically invested his profits in New York City real estate. When he retired in 1834 he was the wealthiest man in the USA, owning most of the southern half of Manhattan, which his sons subsequently inherited and administered.
US financier and inventor. The great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, he built the Astoria section of the New York Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1897. Astor also invented a bicycle brake and an improved turbine engine. He met his death aboard the

St. Regis History
Throughout its history of nearly a century, St. Regis Hotels have invariably attracted the most glamorous, creative and intriguing personalities of each era. In New York alone, Colonel Serge Obelensky, the Russian Prince who had been a page at the Czar's court before he escaped the revolution and grew up to marry Alice Astor, was associated with the St. Regis for many years; Marlene Dietrich, William Paley and his wife Barbara ("Babe") lived at The St. Regis as did Salvador Dali and his wife Gala; and actress Gertrude Lawrence instructed her agent to arrange all her press appointments at The St. Regis. Colonel Astor died on the Titanic in 1912, but his influence will always be felt at all St. Regis Hotels - an impressive roster that continues to grow with the addition of distinctive properties around the world.

Long before Vanderbilt, Gould, Rockefeller, Carnegie and Ford, there was John Jacob Astor, perhaps the first truly diversified capitalist in America. Born in Waldorf, Germany in 1763, Astor came from humble origins, the son of a minor official in Germany. He worked in Waldorf and in London, making musical instruments before he set sail for America in 1784. Originally, Astor and his shipmates were slated to dock in New York but bad weather forced them into Chesapeake Bay, so he eventually found his way to Baltimore. According to the various sources listed below, Astor had either $20, $25 or $250 on him. On issues of this kind, however, I defer to the late great Robert Sobel, so we'll call it $25. Plus Astor is alleged to have had seven flutes with him. Astor then moved on to New York where he went to work for his brother, a butcher, while selling his flutes at this time, for a song.

There were plenty of questions to be answered from Mrs. Fisher's second grade class when they paid a visit to the Coast Guard Air Station. Most of the class had never had the chance to see the helicopters up close or to hear how the Coast Guard saves lives every year. The crewmen that doubled as guides did a great job of watering down their roles and simplifying their missions so the kids could have a clear picture of the Coast Guard. After the fun and exciting fieldtrip the kids now have a better understanding and appreciation for the men and women at the Air Station. For more pictures of the fieldtrip follow this link
In order to really make it sound good you have to smack your lips at the right time. Learning to keep the beat on a variety of instruments, students in Mrs. Van DeGrift's class were paying close attention to her direction and enjoying every minute of it. In the end, if you listened close enough, their was a traditional spiritual song in their somewhere.
The question was, "how many of you have a computer in your house?"

Axel Madsen joins a long list of John Jacob Astor biographers. His bibliography contains more than a dozen histories of the self-made millionaire, his business activities, or his family. Astor family friend Washington Irving penned the first with the elderly tycoon's blessing and assistance: a chronicle of Astoria, the failed venture on the Pacific coast that was published in 1836 as Astoria: Adventure in the Pacific Northwest . Madsen relies heavily on these secondary sources, citing especially the journalist James Parton's 1865 Life of John Jacob Astor as a major source.

The Astor Bloodline The original founder of the Astor fortune was John Jacob Astor (1763-1884). John Jacob Astor was born in Waldorf, Duchy of Baden (Germany) from a Jewish bloodline. The Jewish origins have been hidden, and quite a number of various ideas of the Astor’s heritage have been put into circulation by the Astor's. John Jacob Astor was a butcher in Waldorf. In 1784, he came to America after a stop over in London, England. Although the story is that he came to America pennilessand that may be truehe soon joined the Masonic Lodge, and within 2-3 years had become the Master of the Holland Lodge No. 8 in N.Y. City. (This Holland Lodge is a prominent lodge in that many of its members have good connections to the Illuminati elite. An example of just one Lodge #8 member is Archibald Russell, 1811 - 1871, whose father was President of a real hotbed of Illuminati action for many years: The Royal Society of Edinburgh). By 1788, Astor was a master of Masonic lodge#8. This is rather interesting considering Astor could not speak English when he arrived in America, and supposedly was very poor. John Jacob Astor was always very famous for being coldhearted, anti-social, “a man who didn’t have charm, wit or grace.” (This quote comes even from a relative of the DuPont family who wrote a sympathetic Biography entitled The Astor Family.) If this man lacked social graces and was so cold, and was so poor during his first years in the U.S., why did he rise to such prominence in

Astor, John Jacob, millionaire, the founder of the American Fur Company, was born in Germany, near Heidelberg, in 1763. A peasant's son, he went to London in his sixteenth year, and worked with his brother, a maker of musical instruments. In 1783 he sailed to America, and invested his small capital in furs, and after six years, by economy and industry, he had acquired a fortune of $250,000. He now sent out two expeditions to the Oregon territory, one by land and one by sea, to open a regular trade with the natives, and in 1811 established the fur-trading station of Astoria. From this time Astor's ships were found in every sea. He died in New York in 1848, leaving property estimated at $20,000,000, and a bequest of $450,000 in all to found the Astor library in New York.
