62. Isaac Asimov Science And The Bible

Isaac Asimov on
Science and the Bible
Free Inquiry
Spring 1982) Paul Kurtz: In your view is the Bible widely known and intelligently read today? Isaac Asimov: It is undoubtedly widely known. It is probably owned by more people than any other book. As to how widely it is read one cannot be certain. I suppose it is read very widely in the sense that people just look at the words and read it mechanically. How many people actually think about the words they read, I'm not at all certain. They can go to a house of worship and hear verses read without thinking about what the words mean. Undoubtedly millions of people do. Kurtz: There used to be something called the Higher Biblical Criticism. What has happened to that? Asimov: I am constantly hearing, from people who accept the Bible more or less literally, that the Higher Criticism has been outmoded and discredited, but I don't believe that at all. This is just something that people say who insist on clinging to the literal truth of the Bible. The Higher Criticism, which in the nineteenth century, for example, tried to show that the first few books of the Bible contained several strains that could be identified and separated. I think is as valid today as it ever was. Fundamentally, there is a J-document and a P-document in the early chapters of Genesis and an E-document later on. I have no doubt that as one continues to investigate these things one constantly learns and raises new questions. Kurtz: But by and large the public does not know much about this skeptical, critical interpretation of the Bible. Would you say that is so?

KEY TERMS Isaac Asimov naturalism cultural evolution world government digital revolution futurism "built-in-doubter" scientific method the anthropic principle mysticism scientific humanism By the end of the 1960s it was clear to most concerned observers that the scientific approach to knowing was still foreign to the general world culture. Although science was revolutionizing the course of history and opening the entire universe for intelligent perusal it was seldom being applied to the social realm, and had scarcely dented the world views of human beings. Conceptually speaking, the majority of Earth's inhabitants were still living in a world defined by Bronze Age tribalism. An American chemistry professor, Isaac Asimov, recognized the danger that this situation posed for humanity. Armed with a uniquely creative imagination, plus a gift for explaining difficult ideas, he began to carve out a remarkable dual role: that of science-fiction writer and futurist, and of public educator and interpreter of science. Perhaps more than any other modern writer, Asimov succeeded in spreading the idea of the universality of scientific inquiry to every corner of the civilized world. His world view was founded on an open-ended naturalism: a philosophy that evolves in tandem with the science on which its ultimate premises depend. But, unlike the work of the great earlier philosophers of naturalism such as John Dewey, Asimov's message was communicated in a format and language readily understandable by ordinary people.

In life, unlike chess, the game continues after checkmate. Endings It has been my philosophy of life that difficulties vanish when faced boldly. Difficulties It pays to be obvious, especially if you have a reputation for subtlety. Obviousness It's not so much what you have to learn if you accept weird theories, it's what you have to unlearn. Learning Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome. Death Life Meanwhile, fears of universal disaster sank to an all-time low over the world. Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series A few words, before the reviews. There is a ' Second Foundation Trilogy ', commissioned by Asimov's estate, written after his death. They include Foundation and Chaos, Foundation's Fear and Foundation's Triumph. I've read a few reviews of them, and the general consensus is that they're 'pretty good'. A link to reviews of the books will be online soon, and hopefully I'll be able to review them before long. The blurbs A word of warning. If you haven't read the books yet, please don't just go and read all the book blurbs. They give away the plot (no!). However, if you're an unashamed spoiler-junkie like myself, go knock yourself out. The point of the blurbs is that I get tired of describing the novel itself. I want to review the book, not summarise it, and since someone else has already written a blurb, what the hell, I just copy it out. The book covers In my opinion, the book covers here are some of the best artwork I've ever seen on a sci-fi novel. They are not necessarily good depictions of the worlds in the novels, with the exception of the books dealing with Trantor, but they still look pretty cool.

It took me a long time to say it. I've been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say one was an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn't have. Somehow, it was better to say one was a humanist or an agnostic. I finally decided that I'm a creature of emotion as well as of reason. Emotionally, I am an atheist. I don't have the evidence to prove that God doesn't exist, but I so strongly suspect he doesn't that I don't want to waste my time. Science Writer, `Robotics' Creator Isaac Asimov Dies
    By Sidney C. Schaer
Newsday New York More than 40 years ago, a character in Isaac Asimov's most famous science fiction series, the "Foundation" trilogy, said, "My novels are going to be interesting and are going to sell and be famous. What's the use of writing books unless you sell them and become well-known? I don't want some old professors to know me. It's got to be everybody." Even as he was writing those words, Asimov was establishing his reputation as one of the world's premier science fiction writers. Asimov, who died in New York Monday at 72, ultimately became this century's most recognized one-man encyclopedist with 477 published titles by his own count. Long before the advent of the Information Age, Asimov was a singular information processor. "Isaac Asimov is the greatest explainer of the age," said Carl Sagan, the Cornell University astronomer. Such a feat was accomplished by an extraordinary combination of imagination and intellect: an imagination that allowed him to soar into the future matched with an intellect that allowed him to roam in the past and present, searching for explanations of anything and everything.

I, Robot, Isaac Asimov The three rules of robots: Why are the three laws of robots recursive? What is it that creates tension within these stories?
The focus of most of the stories:
    1) robot behavior that is anomalous and needs to be explained and "solved:"
    2) we are confronted with the tension between
    a) the instrumental purposes to which robots are turned, and
    b) the unintended consequences of using intelligent robots as our servants. I, Robot: questions for discussion "Robbie" (1940): what does Gloria's response to Robbie suggest about robots? "Runaround" (1942): what does Speedy getting caught between the conflicting imperatives (obeying and self-preservation) suggest about the tension between a software programming ideal and real world implementation? "Reason" (1941) : what does this story, and its display of Cutie's reasoning powers, suggest about reason as humans practice it? "Catch That Rabbit" (1944): what does this story suggest about the dangers implicit in giving one agent (here Dave) absolute power over his subordinates?

    Foundation by Isaac Asimov
Some books feel like friends from the very beginning. Such is the case with Isaac Asimov's novel, Foundation . This book was originally the first in a series of Foundation novels. (However, Prelude to Foundation has since been published.) The novel is composed of five sections. Four of these sections were originally published separately and appeared as short stories in Astounding Magazine between 1942 and 1944. They were later compiled together into one volume in 1951 alongside a newly written introduction section, and thus Foundation as we know now it was published. (Does any of that matter? Not really. I didn't read the details on the publishing history until after I read it. But as an after note, I was intrigued by it. So I thought I'd share it with you.)
For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire had ruled supreme. Now it was dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, could see into the futurea dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that would last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save mankind, Seldon gathered the best minds in the Empireboth scientists and scholarsand brought them to a bleak planet at the edge of the Galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He called his sanctuary the Foundation.
