The Last Question
By Isaac Asimov Isaac Asimov was the most prolific science fiction author of all time. In fifty years he averaged a new magazine article, short story, or book every two weeks, and most of that on a manual typewriter. Asimov thought that The Last Question This is by far my favorite story of all those I have written. After all, I undertook to tell several trillion years of human history in the space of a short story and I leave it to you as to how well I succeeded. I also undertook another task, but I won't tell you what that was lest l spoil the story for you. It is a curious fact that innumerable readers have asked me if I wrote this story. They seem never to remember the title of the story or (for sure) the author, except for the vague thought it might be me. But, of course, they never forget the story itself especially the ending. The idea seems to drown out everything and I'm satisfied that it should. The last question was asked for the first time, half in jest, on May 21, 2061, at a time when humanity first stepped into the light. The question came about as a result of a five-dollar bet over highballs, and it happened this way: Alexander Adell and Bertram Lupov were two of the faithful attendants of Multivac. As well as any human beings could, they knew what lay behind the cold, clicking, flashing face miles and miles of face of that giant computer. They had at least a vague notion of the general plan of relays and circuits that had long since grown past the point where any single human could possibly have a firm grasp of the whole.

"Self- education is, I f ir m l y believe , the o n l y kind of e d u c a t io n there is." ~ Isaac Asimov Thinking through his fingers, prolific writer Issac Asimov (1920-1992) was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to New York with his family in 1923. By age five, he taught himself to read with Brooklyn street signs, then also learned Yiddish on his own. Difficulties often vanish when faced boldly ," he said. At age seven, Asimov taught his younger sister to read . He skipped several grades and graduated from high school at 15. Writing was always his true passion "I make no effort to write poetically or in a high literary style. I try only to write clearly and I have the very good fortune to think clearly so that the writing comes out as I think , in satisfactory shape," he explained. Asimov sold his first science fiction story, Marooned Off Vesta when he was 18, launching a remarkable career. His first book, a science-fiction novel, Pebble in the Sky , was published in 1950. "There isn’t an idea I’ve had that I haven’t put down on paper," said Asimov who

Editoriale

All Four Stanzas By Isaac Asimov Introductory Note. Unless you're already well acquainted with our "national anthem," this interesting piece by the late Isaac Asimov will be an eye-opener. It was for me. It's especially appropriate at a time when there is much talk of tossing out this difficult-to-sing and difficult-to-comprehend old song in favor of something that better suits Ray Charles' voice. You'll understand the song much better after you read Mr. Asimov's explanation. Hardly Waite, Gazette Senior Editor. I have a weaknessI am crazy, absolutely nuts, about our national anthem. The words are difficult and the tune is almost impossible, but frequently when I'm taking a shower I sing it with as much power and emotion as I can. It shakes me up every time. I was once asked to speak at a luncheon. Taking my life in my hands, I announced I was going to sing our national anthemall four stanzas. This was greeted with loud groans. One man closed the door to the kitchen, where the noise of dishes and cutlery was loud and distracting. "Thanks, Herb," I said. "That's all right," he said. "It was at the request of the kitchen staff."

ISAAC ASIMOV
This may not be true, for Asimov is reckoned by many as the best science fiction writer, if not of all times then, at least of this century.
One should also, not compare him with Jules Verne, the father of modern science fiction. He was of a different era; of the last century. The progress of Science makes the comparison unfair. But what Jules Verne was to his generation, Asimov is to this one and may like him inflame the imagination of many and inspire others to be aware, and interested in Science.
Asimov was born in Russia in 1920, ninety-two years after Jules Verne. His parents moved to USA within three years of his birth. He, unlike Jules Verne who was a lawyer, chose Chemistry, taught Biochemistry for a few years in the School of Medicine, Boston University before retiring to devote full time to his writing in 1958. He was a prolific writer. At the time of his death in April 1992, he had written about 500 books and thousands of articles ranging from Science to Shakespeare, but one will do well to ignore his writings apart from popular Science and Science fiction.
(1) A Robot may not ignore a human being or through inaction allow human being to come to harm
(2) A Robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law
(3) A Robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second law
