What I’ve Done...
I’ve been writing reviews of all of Asimov’s books and short fiction. So far, I’ve reviewed all of his books which I’ve read (and even the four I haven’t), all of his anthologized science fiction and fantasy, and a few bits and pieces of unanthologized material. As time permits, I will continue the work. Each review is about a page long (sometimes longer) and is intended to touch on the main reasons why I do or do not like a particular book. I don’t consider my position as an Asimov fan to obligate me to like his poorer work. On the other hand, there’s an awful lot by Asimov which I really, really like—which is why I’m an Asimov fan in the first place. The reviews are often highly personal; their goal is to explain why I like a particular book, not why it’s a good book or a bad book. I have no training in literary criticism; I can only evaluate my own reaction.

If you didn't like what he was serving, you could wait a few minutes for him to bring out something else. By the time he died in 1992, at the age of 72, Asimov had published more than 470 books, ranging from science-fiction classics to annotated guides of great literature to limerick collections to The Sensuous Dirty Old Man , a defense and celebration of lechery. "His first 100 books took him 237 months, or almost 20 years, until October 1969, to write," his

    The Reagan Doctrine
    by Isaac Asimov
    from The Austin American-Statesman , May 10, 1981
Some time ago, Ronald Reagan pointed out that one couldn't trust the Soviet government because the Soviets didn't believe in God or in an afterlife and therefore had no reason to behave honorably, but would be willing to lie and cheat and do all sorts of wicked things to aid their cause. Naturally, I firmly believe that the president of the United States knows what he is talking about, so I've done my very best to puzzle out the meaning of that statement. Let me begin by presenting this "Reagan Doctrine" (using the term with all possible respect): "No one who disbelieves in God and in an afterlife can possibly be trusted." If this is true (and it must be if the president says so), then people are just naturally dishonest and crooked and downright rotten. In order to keep them from lying and cheating every time they open their mouths, they must be bribed or scared out of doing so. They have to be told and made to believe that if they tell the truth and do the right thing and behave themselves, they will go to heaven and get to plunk a harp and wear the latest design in halos. They must also be told and made to believe that if they lie and steal and run around with the opposite sex, they are going to hell and will roast over a brimstone fire forever. It's a little depressing, if you come to think of it. By the Reagan Doctrine, there is no such thing as a person who keeps his word just because he has a sense of honor. No one tells the truth just because he thinks that it is the decent thing to do. No one is kind because he feels sympathy for others, or treats others decently because he likes the kind of world in which decency exists.

    What Is Intelligence, Anyway?
    Isaac Asimov
What is intelligence, anyway? When I was in the army, I received the kind of aptitude test that all soldiers took and, against a normal of 100, scored 160. No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that, and for two hours they made a big fuss over me. (It didn't mean anything. The next day I was still a buck private with KP - kitchen police - as my highest duty.)
All my life I've been registering scores like that, so that I have the complacent feeling that I'm highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so too. Actually, though, don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering the type of academic questions that are considered worthy of answers by people who make up the intelligence tests - people with intellectual bents similar to mine?
For instance, I had an auto-repair man once, who, on these intelligence tests, could not possibly have scored more than 80, by my estimate. I always took it for granted that I was far more intelligent than he was. Yet, when anything went wrong with my car I hastened to him with it, watched him anxiously as he explored its vitals, and listened to his pronouncements as though they were divine oracles - and he always fixed my car.
Well, then, suppose my auto-repair man devised questions for an intelligence test. Or suppose a carpenter did, or a farmer, or, indeed, almost anyone but an academician. By every one of those tests, I'd prove myself a moron, and I'd be a moron, too. In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in and of the fact that a small subsection of that society has managed to foist itself on the rest as an arbiter of such matters.

    Isaac Asimov
Dr. Isaac Asimov (c. January 2, 1920- April 6, 1992, was a Russian-born American Jewish author and biochemist, a highly successful and exceptionally prolific writer best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Asimov's most famous work is the Foundation Series, which was part of one of his two major series, the Galactic Empire Series, later merged with his other famous story arc, the Robot series. He also wrote mysteries and fantasy, as well as a great amount of non-fiction. Asimov wrote or edited more than 500 volumes and an estimated 90,000 letters or postcards, and he has works in every major category of the Dewey Decimal System except Philosophy. Asimov was by consensus a master of the science-fiction genre and, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, was considered to be one of the "Big Three" science-fiction writers during his lifetime. Most of Asimov's popularized science books explain scientific concepts in a historical way, going back as far as possible to a time when the science in question was at its simplest stage. He often gives nationalities, birth dates and death dates for the scientists he mentions, as well as etymologies and pronunciation guides for technical terms. Examples of this style include his

    Books by Isaac Asimov
At the time of his death, Isaac Asimov had written more than 300 books. Despite being known for his groundbreaking science fiction, most of Asimov's works were non-fiction books popularizing science and technology. After all, he was a bio-chemist and a professor at Boston University. In fact, he went through a 20-year period where he wrote no sf at all. His publisher had to lure him back to sf with the biggest book advance he ever got in his life. His entry into the best-seller charts assured that Asimov would write a sf book or two a year for the rest of his life mostly expanding the universes he created in his youth. Despite his prodigious output, Asimov is best known for his earlier works, and it's a good place to start. His robot stories are perhaps his best known. Asimov created the three laws of robotics that a robot would never harm a human being, by its inaction never cause a human being harm, and that it should look out for its own survival. These principals, in one way or another, were used by every writer of every robot story since. The best of his stories are collected in I, Robot
