      Interview: Catherine Asaro
      By J. Alexander Harman
2 October 2000 C atherine Asaro is the author of Primary Inversion Catch the Lightning The Last Hawk The Radiant Seas ... The Veiled Web and Ascendant Sun as well as the forthcoming The Phoenix Code and The Quantum Rose (part of which was serialized in the May-July 1999 issues of Analog ). She has also had several shorter works published in Analog , including the Hugo-nominated novella "Aurora in Four Voices". Dr. Asaro (she holds a Ph.D. in physics) has a gift for creating plausible scientific explanations for such seemingly unlikely phenomena as faster-than-light travel and telepathy. I first became aware of her work after it was recommended to me by my friend (and Strange Horizons Editor-in-Chief) Mary Anne Mohanraj; I picked up Primary Inversion, and I've been hooked on Catherine's books ever since. Although her writing is considered 'hard' SF, with detailed and plausible explanations of the physics behind the technologies she describes, it's also character-driven. Each of her books centers on a love story between two well-developed (and usually very different) characters, and her writing has earned rave reviews in The Romantic Times as well as Analog and Asimov's.

The war between the Eubian Concord and the Skolian Imperialate was devastating to both empires. Many died including the then rulers of the Eubian Concord; whole worlds destroyed. Even when there are no armed combat between the two empires, hostilities are high and everyone remains on a constant state of alert expecting the other side to renew the fight.
Jaibriol rules the Eubian Concord; Kelric rules the Skolian Imperialate. Neither wants war as both understands the consequences first hand. However, both struggles with keeping in line powerful groups demanding the conquest of their rival. Each also hides a devastating secret that if revealed would lead to their ouster and their most likely respective replacement would renew the conflict, killing trillions. As their internal enemies seek weaknesses, Jaibriol hides his taboo skill of Psion as he would go from ruler to slave and Kelric has told no one about having a wife and kid as his people would destroy their homeland.
The latest Skolian Empire tale is an exciting outer space thriller that for much of the tale focuses on the two leaders. The respective crisis that confronts Kelric and Jaibriol makes both seem genuine as each fear for their people if war reignites between them yet feel doomed as if this is the inevitable outcome. Fans of the series will appreciate this character driven entry that looks deep into the pair of rulers, but newcomers will be lost in space in spite of an overly done but cleverly designed history (mostly through the rulers looking back).

The Fire Opal by Catherine Asaro
Catherine Asaro has created a fascinating world and magic system in The Lost Continent series. The newest installation, the fire opal, is about Ginger-Sun a priestess for the Dragon-Sun. The last book took place in Taka Mal as does this one. However, this book is set on the frontier between Taka Mal and Jazid. Ginger-Sun is a red-haired beauty in a dark-haired superstitious village. When the miners find a body dumped in the mines, they bring it to Ginger for last rites. However, the man is not as dead as he looks. When Ginger chooses to help Darz recuperate, her life is turned upside down.
I'll admit that I have always had problems with the "frontier people who are very wary of change and very superstitious". It reminds me a lot of Lackey's Arrows of the Queen trilogy. The rural folk don't like people who step outside the approved box for their gender. I did like how Asaro handled the climatic situation in the village for Ginger. I will admit that I feel some empathy for the heroine. When I was growing up in the small town in Indiana, I felt different from the others around me.
The author has an excellent writing style that vividly draws the pictures in my imagination. I can't wait for the next in the series.

Catherine Asaro's faster-than-light (FTL) space drive really works at least on paper. The physicist and science fiction writer has based the "inversion engine" of her Skolian Empire space opera series on her own thought experiments about new forms of space travel. Besides using it to get her characters from place to place, she first wrote about the mathematics of the FTL drive in an April 1996 paper in The American Journal of Physics Searching for breakthroughs in propulsion Research into space travel has been a focus for Asaro's work as a consulting physicist. Last year, she chaired two sessions of the "Breakthrough Physics Propulsion Workshop" at the Space Technology Applications International Forum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Images
