Juni 1921 in Wien als Sohn eines Schuhmachermeisters geboren; er selbst behauptet, sein Geburtsort sei St. Achatz am Walde, ein Waldgeviert im Waldviertel. Der Dichter wächst im Wiener Vorort Breitensee in kleinbürgerlichen Verhältnissen auf und verbringt dort Kindheit und Jugend. Von seinen Eltern, die aus Retz im Waldviertel stammen, habe er seinen typisch niederösterreichischen Akzent, aber auch seine Liebe zum rustikalen Landschaftstypus. Bereits im Alter von 15 Jahren beginnt der spätere Dichter, unter dem Pseudonym John Hamilton Detektivgeschichten zu schreiben. "Meine heimat ist Österreich, mein vaterland Europa, mein wohnort Malmö, meine hautfarbe weiß, meine augen blau, mein mut verschieden, meine Laune launisch, im handumdrehen zufrieden, im handumdrehen verdrossen, ein freund der fröhlichkeit, im grunde traurig ... im kriege zerschossen, im frieden zerhaut, ein hasser der polizei, ein verächter der obrigkeit, ein brechmittel der linken, ein juckpulver den rechten ...
