Comments on the `Encyclopedia of Science Fiction'
(I originally sent these to John Clute in early 1997. This commentary on the `Encyclopedia Of SF' has turned into quite a project. I suppose, since I find myself writing an extended critique that goes beyond simple factual correction, that some presentation of my credentials and explanation of my background and viewpoint is in order. I am a college-educated American white male born in 1957, a computer programmer and Internet expert with a high IQ and an extensive knowledge base in the sciences and technology. I am a libertarian, a neopagan materialist, an unabashed Heinleinophile, and I like my SF with rivets on. All these are thoroughly typical attributes for an American SF fan, and a great deal of the stuff is and has always been obviously written for people like me. I have been reading SF omnivorously for over 35 years, ever since I was six years old. My personal library of SF and related literature includes over 3,000 volumes (still including the first SF book I ever owned, and including almost every major work uttered in the genre between 1938 and 1979), and I estimate that this represents approximately one eighth of my total reading in the field. I have been going to SF conventions regularly for two decades, am fairly well known in American fandom, and count many contemporary SF authors among my friends and acquaintances. I have some other credentials which are less typical but quite relevant to the job of critiquing this work. I have more than the average fannish knowledge of cultural history and "great literature", having read quite a bit of both. I have been a moderately successful poet and songwriter and quite a successful writer for an amateur, with authorial credits on four books (one of those was a successful work of specialist lexicography involving challenges not unlike the SF Encyclopedia). I have read a lot of pre-Campbellian SF and many of the standard histories and critical works on the SF field.

Sir Edwin Arnold:
A Japanese Dinner Party, 1890
A BANQUET here, properly arranged, served, and located, furnishes, in my humble judgment, as graceful and delightful a meal as can be shared in all the world; and casts into the shade the classic memories of the triclinia of ancient times, the too solid and lavish dishes of Turkey and Syria, the cloying sweetmeats of an Indian burra Khana , and even in many respects the festal triumphs of a Parisian or London cordon bleu The club, situated in the heart of the city, is a building entirely of the indigenous style as to design and decoration, frequented chiefly by the higher officials and noblemen of Tokyo. Imagine, if you can, endless platforms of polished wood, stairway apartment ladders of shining cedar and pine, apartment after apartment carpeted with spotless matting, and walled by the delicate joinery of the shoji -everywhere a scrupulous neatness, an exquisite elegance, a dainty aesthetic reserve; nothing too much anywhere of ornament. Except the faultless carpentry of the framework and the tender color of the walls and paneled ceilings, you will see only a stork or two in silk embroidery here, a dream in sepia of Fuji-San there, a purple chrysanthemum plant yonder, in its pot of green and gray porcelain, and the snow-white floors with their little square cushions. Our dinner was one of about twenty cushions, and we were received at the entrance by about as many

The London - Burroughs Connection
by
David Arthur Adams

This article first appeared in ERBapa #54, Summer 1997
(concurrently published in the Jack London Society Newsletter, Fall-Winter 1997).
Jack Griffith London
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Part 1: London "Bridge"
One searches in vain for any reference to Edgar Rice Burroughs in the many biographies and scholarly studies on the life and works of Jack London. And yet the connection is there to be discovered by the serious critic of American belles-lettres. The status in the academic world of both of these important writers is tainted by the suggestion of a popularity gained at the expense of serious literary intentions. Those who study the works either of London or Burroughs know this peripheral status well, in fact much of their work has to do with an explanation of this neglect. It is interesting to note that London scholars for the most part have only vague notions about the life and works of Burroughs other than the fact that he created Tarzan of the Apes. Whereas, many Burroughs scholars are well aware of London’s life and works and are in fact surprised to see that London’s reputation is not as high in the critical literary world as they have imagined. In a future study I plan to investigate this scholarly neglect of London and Burroughs in more detail. Today my intention is to point up a few connections that can be made most easily through their mutual penchant in the area of atavistic tales.

Lord Krishna During the centuries in which Buddhism was establishing itself in the east of India, the older Brahmanism in the west was undergoing the changes which resulted in the Hinduism which is now the prevailing religion of India. The main ancient sources of information with regard to these Hindu beliefs and practises are the two great epics, the "Ramayana" and the Maha Bharata. The former is a highly artificial production based on legend and ascribed to one man, Valmiki. The latter, a "huge conglomeration of stirring adventure, legend, myth, history, and superstition," is a composite production, begun probably as early as the fourth or fifth century before Christ, and completed by the end of the sixth century of our era. It represents many strata of religious belief.
