Couperin was born in Paris . His mother died when he was only 17 months old and he was raised by his father, Nicolas, also a composer and the successor to Fran§ois "Le Grand" as organist at St. Gervais Church . Nothing is known of Couperin's education, though his library at the time of death contained 885 books, unusual for a musician and evidence of scholarly interest. At age 21, Couperin's father died without leaving a will, making him the sole heir of both his parents. His inheritance included Nicolas's post at St. Gervais. In 1752, Couperin married Elisabeth-Antoinette Blanchet, a professional musician and the daughter of the best harpsichord maker in France, Fran§ois-Etienne Blanchet . They had four children, three of whom became musicians.

The Saint Gervais organ : the Couperins
Armand-Louis Couperin
Nicolas Couperin's son and ' cousin, he was provided his musical education from his father, like the other members of the family. When Nicolas died in 1748 , he succeeded him to Saint Gervais; he was then twenty one years old and was already a recognized virtuoso. In 1752 he married Elisabeth Blanchet, the daughter of the famous harpsichord maker, and thus got a relative well-off. His library, unusual for a musician, gives evidence of his large culture and its curiosity.
However, his works are victims of too much ease to follow the fashions of that time and they did not survive him.
He accumulated many posts of organist and then he owed, as it was usual, be frequently replaced by one of his three children, who all played the organ. Armand-Louis was killed a few months before the French Revolution in a traffic accident by going from the Sainte-Chapelle to Saint Gervais. Previous page

"The escape from pain in surgical operations is a chimera...
'Knife' and 'pain' in surgery are words which are
always inseparable in the minds of patients"

(Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau, 1839) In Greek mythology, the chimera was a fire-breathing creature with a lion’s head and foreparts, a goat’s middle, a dragon’s rear, and a tail in the form of a snake. The utopian vision of pain-free surgery was more attractive to our suffering ancestors than a mythological beast; but in the early 19th century, its prospect seemed no less fantastical. Excruciating and sometimes chronic pain was a fixture of earthly life - which in any case tended to be nasty, brutish and short. Among physicians, the illustrious Paris surgeon Velpeau and the great majority of his contemporaries found the notion of pain-free surgery fanciful . Within a few years, they were confounded . Today use of anaesthetics and analgesics is routine in surgical medicine, though much scope for progress remains. Early in the 21st century, conventional medical wisdom remains scornful or dismissive of future

http://web.ff.cuni.cz/~lazarus/megaphones.html
LOUIS ARMAND: THE MEGAPHONES OF PRAGUE
installation + text (1996-present)
The Megaphones of Prague is an ongoing text + installation project which was initiated in 1996 in conjunction with Prague's Twisted Spoon Press . It incorporates text, photography, physical + sound installation, as well as site specific works. Exhibition of the work has taken place in numerous venues, including as part of a large scale solo exhibition of Louis Armand's work at Galerie ArtNatur in Prague, October 1999.
The project began with the publication of a series of critical observations about the (then) prevalence of Prague's megaphones-a phenomenon encountered in many European cities, but particularly in central and eastern Europe. In Prague, many of these megaphones date back to the First Republic, and served to provide (as a number of them still do today) community announcements. During the devastating 2002 Prague floods, air-raid sirens and subway megaphones could be heard throughout the day and often through the long blackouts at night.
During the Nazi occupation, the occupying forces used the megaphone system to announce the death-lists, among other things. Transcripts and archive recording of the original broadcasts from the Interior Ministry are employed as part of the project's sound installation. A large part of the project entails the researching and recovery of original texts, recordings and archival footage of the megaphones within various historical contexts. During the communist period and the Warsaw Pact occupation in 1968, the megaphones again served various informational and propagandistic functions. But whilst the Nazis published and announced the lists of their victims as part of a programme of terrorism, the communist regime used the megaphones to promote a type of official silence with regards to the fate of those taken away to the secret police headquarters on Bartholomeska.
