He is most famous for his long-running series set in the fictional realm of Xanth . Many of his books have appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list . He is one of the most prolific science fiction/fantasy authors of all time. He has claimed that one of his greatest achievements has been to publish a book for every letter of the alphabet, from Anthonology to Zombie Lover Anthony's family emigrated to the United States from Britain when he was four. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen while serving in the United States Army in 1958. After completing a two year stint in military service, he briefly taught public school before becoming a fulltime writer. Anthony currently lives with his wife on a tree farm which he owns in Florida. He and his wife have two daughters and one grandchild. On multiple occasions he has moved from one publisher to another (taking a profitable hit series with him), when he felt the editors were unduly tampering with his work. (I thought I'd start with the dumbest question first...) I'm not sure I can define humor. Something that makes folk laugh in a pleasant way, that gives pleasure. My Xanth series is essentially humor. It started that way because I couldn't take fantasy seriously. Later I was able to, but Xanth was locked in. What elements of fantasy make good sources of humor? I regard anything as a potential source of humor. I have particular fun parodying current societal conventions. The whole "Adult Conspiracy to keep interesting things from children" is an example. It is ludicrous to think that trying to hide sex will make it not exist. Also, "Mundania" is unfailingly dreary; that's another spoof. Your humor tends to spoof fantasy but also aspects of the "real" world. How do you strike a balance between the two? The balance is not in the distribution of the text, not 1,000 words humor and 1,000 words serious. I try rather to have different levels, so that what is funny on the surface may be meaningful upon reflection. This doesn't necessarily work well, and some readers - and reviewers - are oblivious, but it is what I try for.

This ongoing survey won me the 2003 "Friend of EPIC" award for service to the electronic publishing community. NOTICE: a writer told me that without information on actual sales, these reports are largely meaningless. Good point. So I will hereafter list what sales figures I can get, as addenda to the individual publisher entries. There will be two: the publisher's and the author's. If they don't match, as seems likely, writers can decide which ones seem more credible. Remember, sales of individual titles can vary widely. I have had million copy sales (the first Xanth novel, mass market print, over the course of 30 years, cumulative) and tiny, such as 8 electronic in three months for Relationships . Unnumbered Reviews #8: Piers Anthony This review is intended as first aid for readers who are giving the Piers Anthony shelf at the bookstore dubious glances and wondering whether and where to jump in. That comes close to being a frequently asked question. In some respects, my answers are going to be very similar to those that are typically given in response. Piers Anthony is a writer with a gimmick. Many gimmicks, in fact, and each book or series he writes is structured around a gimmick of some sort, most often a game. The result is typically excellent mind candy, at least to start, often mixed in with non-trivial ethical or philosophical issues which can challenge the young readers who constitute his primary target audience. Anthony has the bad habit, unfortunately, of taking the contents of one excellent novel and stretching them over an entire series flogging the gimmick-of-the-day until the last bit of life has gone out of it. This is why he aggravates people so: He hasn't the grace to be an untalented hack who can just be ignored or to write to his potential.

I can only assume it was meant to be lighthearted and funny, but it was really a just a load of unfunny, uninspired dreck. Lest you think I'm being harsh, I've never run into anyone who actually liked that series. It is sad but true that when an author's failings rise up and strike you in the face, the pain tends to percolate backwards, poisoning even those books you used to like. It took a few years, but I gradually liquidated most of my Anthony holdings. Mostbut not all. If it were all, I wouldn't have bothered to write this page. So this page is dedicated to those few of his books that I still like, and which I might even recommend to others. By the nature of things, they tend to be earlier books, and quite possibly unknown even to readers familiar with Anthony's work. Macroscope is, in my opinion, the best thing Anthony has written. It's a single large novel (unusual for him) about a kind of faster-than-light telescope called a "macroscope". The macroscope can, quite literally, see anything, anywhere, at any time. Using it, researchers have found any number of alien civilizations throughout the galaxy; they have also found the macroscopic equivalent of radio broadcasts, the apparent means for these civilizations to communicate. The broadcasts are on all topics, and one of them is deadly: a program that reduces all viewers of sufficient intelligence to drooling idiocy.
