Eurasianism
May 21, 2006 ESM website it's possible to read about youth camps and rallies where Eurasianist ideology is preached - it's intensely anti-American, anti-NATO and "anti-Orange". The Eurasian movement has members at the highest level of the Russian Federal Government, and its "Higher Council" is led by figures such as the vice speaker of the Russian Duma, A.P.Troshev – vice speaker of Russian Senate, A.A.-M. Aslakhanov, adviser to President Putin, M.V. Margelov, president of the Duma Committee for International Affairs, and V.I. Kalyuzhny, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs. Posted in Russia

THE CENTURIES-OLD HISTORY OF THE ST.-DANIIL MONASTERY for International Day of Cultural and Historical Monuments By E. Andrusenko A few kilometers south of the Kremlin one can see the gilded cupolas of the St.-Daniil monastery towering above one of the busiest districts of Moscow. A closer look at its facade and the surrounding area proves that its constructors new how to combine architecture and landscape. Today the monastery is surrounded with modern buildings. But centuries ago its majestic towers encircled by a white toothed wall blended in perfectly with the panorama of the river Moskva.

Marking the poet's 115th birth anniversary
On April 15 we marked the 115th birth anniversary of Nikolai Gumilyov, one of the finest Russian poets of the early 20th century. Nikolai Gumilyov was born in 1886 near St. Petersburg into the family of a naval physician. As a little boy, Nikolai enjoyed watching ships and dreamed of traveling to distant countries. Small wonder that his early work is permeated with sea motifs and that his passion for travels lasted a lifetime.

Since the early 1930s, Soviet writers had been required to place their talents in the service of the state, crafting works which advanced current political and economic initiatives in the officially sanctioned style of Socialist Realism. Kushner's quiet lyricism, his focus on the personal and day to day, challenged a fundamental tenet of Soviet ideology: the primacy of the collective over the individual.

Songs Of Darkness
Most of these are poems, and most have a theme of darkness ; those that are not I just happen to like. They are grouped by their author's nationality and in rough chronological order, from the oldest to the newest; since Britain gave us the English language, the British authors come first, beginning with the ones from medieval and Renaissance times, followed by the authors from Britain's former colonies, starting with the U.S.; and then others, starting with countries where the dominant language is some other Indo-European language besides English. The picture is a painting of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's called Persephone.

    Symbolism
Symbolism was an artistic movement that swept across Europe in the late nineteenth century. Russian Symbolism has its roots in French Symbolism . The symbolist aesthetic has been expressed in painting and prose as well as in poetry in Russia. The Russian symbolist poets were a collection of artists who drew on deep feelings of mysticism when they gave form to the thoughts and visions that the Muse inspired in them. They felt themselves to be a link between the people (the Russian narod ) and a higher spiritual realm. One of the earlier symbolists, Vladimir Solovev , created an entire spiritual belief system based on the worship of the Eternal Feminine . This being was the Muse from whom inspiration came, she was Nature, and her intellect and beauty became tangible in women on the temporal plane. Two younger poets, Aleksandr Blok and Andrei Bely , were entranced by Solovev's mysticism.

    Inhabitants
From the middle of the 18the Century and to this day, St. Petersburg is the fourth largest city in terms of population in Europe. The leading positions were always occupied by London and Paris, leaving Naples, Vienna, Berlin and Moscow to fight it out for the “bronze.” Petersburg reached its peak in the 1990s, with a population of about 5.2  million. Now, as is the case across the whole of Russia, the population is falling, but the city continues to occupy its traditional fourth position in the rankings, behind Moscow, London and Paris.
Right up until the 1970s, Petersburg was a city of newcomers: before the Revolution, they accounted for 70 percent of the population. For the most part this figure was made up of peasants that had moved from the Tverskaya, Yaroslavskaya, Pskovskaya and Novgorodskaya provinces.
In the rest of Russia, the Northern Capital was always considered to be a “German city”, although in reality Russians accounted for over 80 percent of the population. From the 18th Century there were English, French, Swedish German and Finnish colonies within the city. The place names Angliiskaya Naberezhnaya and Angliisky Prospekt – the English Embankment and English Prospect – reflect earlier concentrations of this nationality in certain areas, while the Germans, Dutch and French settled around Bolshaya Konyushennaya Ulitsa and Kazanskaya Ulitsa. To this day, one can find many non-Russian Orthodox churches here. The Germans, in fact, had another area where they tended to accumulate – Vasilievsky Island. A German from Vasilievsky Island would go on to become a typical character from Russian literature. Finns in the city, who were predominantly industrial workers, lived for the most part on the Vyborg Side.

Departure Although this land is not my own,
I will remember its inland sea
and the waters that are so cold
    the sand as white
as old bones, the pine trees
strangely red where the sun comes down. I cannot say if it is our love, or the day, that is ending. ~Anna Akhmatova Anna Akhmatova was born Anna Gorenko in Bolshoy Fontan, near Odessa, Ukraine, as the daughter of a naval engineer. She began writing poetry at the age of 11, and adopted a pseudonym to allay her father's fears that as a"decadent poetress" she would dishonour the family. The pseudonym was the Tatar name of Akhmatova's great-grandmother. When she was sixteen, her father abandoned his family. Akhmatova attended a girls' gymnasium in Tsarskoe Selo and the famous Smolnyi Institute in St. Petersburg. She continued her studies in Kiev in Fundukleevskaia gymnasium (1906) and in a law school (1907) before moving to St. Petersburg to study literature. Among her teachers were the poet, dramatist and essayist Innokenty Annensky (1856-1909), who influenced her deeply. More info about Anna Akhmatova Posted by traveller one at 8:49 PM
