Maya Angelou Tells
'Why The Caged Bird Sings'
Maya Angelou began her life on April 4, 1928 as Marguerite Johnson. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Bailey and Vivian Baxter. She received her name Maya from her older brother, also named Bailey. Her career as a writer extends beyond merely poetry for she has penned two autobiographies, several plays, TV shows, and has appeared on stage in a few Broadway plays as well. Maya Angelou’s most famous work, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings , was written in 1969. Her follow up autobiography, Gather Together In My Name , came later, in 1974. The story tells of her and her brother’s troubles during childhood. After their parents divorced, the two children went to live with their grandmother, Anne Henderson, who resided in Stamps, Arkansas, in 1930. They soon came to know her as “Momma.” While living in Stamps, Maya witnessed the harassment and degradation of African Americans, which she would write about later in her books. Maya excelled academically and graduated from Lafayette County Training School with honors. She and Bailey went to live with their remarried mother in 1940 in San Francisco, California. In San Francisco, life for Maya Angelou was different than it had been in the south. African Americans had more rights and were treated more respectfully. Maya learned how to lead a life of self-respect from her mother during this time of her life. At 16, Maya gave birth to a son, Guy Johnson, out of wedlock.

In times of interior violent storms she sat, her hands resting in her lap calmly, like good children sleeping. Her passion was never spent in public display. She offered her industry and her energies to action, toward righting ancient and current wrongs in this world. She believed religiously in non-violent protest.

    BLACK FAMILY PLEDGE
    By Dr. Maya Angelou
    Because we have forgotten our ancestors our children no longer give us honor. Because we have lost the path our ancestors cleared, kneeling in perilous undergrowth, our children cannot find their way. Because we have banished the God of our ancestors, our children can not pray. Because the long wails of our ancestors have faded beyond our hearing, our children cannot hear us crying. Because we have abandoned our wisdom of mothering and fathering, our befuddled children give birth to children they neither want nor understand. Because we have forgotten how to love, the adversary is within our gates, and holds us up to the mirror of the world, shouting, Regard the loveless. Therefore, we pledge to bind ourselves again to one another;
    To embrace our lowliest,
    To keep company with our loneliest,
    To educate our illiterate,
    To feed our starving,
    To clothe our ragged,
    To do all good things, knowing that we are more than keepers of our brothers and sisters. We are our brothers and sisters. In honor of those who toiled and implored God with golden tongues, and in gratitude to the same God who brought us out of hopeless desolation

    - Maya Angelou An accomplished poet, memoirist, playwright, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou has been widely recognized for her work. She earned the unique distinction of receiving a Pulitzer Prize Nomination, an Emmy Award Nomination, a Grammy, the Mother Teresa Award, and dozens of Honorary Degrees. After touring Europe with a production of the opera Porgy and Bess in the 1950s, she became increasingly committed to developing as a writer. She joined the Harlem Writers Guild and became associated with the writers of the Civil Rights Movement. Her writing stood side-by-side with her work on civil rights, which she has dedicated much of her life to protecting both through her words and through her actions. She also became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1959 and worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had originally requested she work for the SCLC. She remembers him as a "brilliant" man whose "brain was like sparkles of stardust." In addition to working for civil rights in the United States, she also acted for civil rights in South Africa. She fought for improved conditions for women living in the Third World, particularly in Africa. In addition, she was a prominent speaker at the Million Man March, where she recited the words that begin this biography.

    Who Mentored Maya Angelou?
    Maya Angelou is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary literature and as a remarkable Renaissance woman. She is a poet, educator, historian, best-selling author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. Dr. Angelou has authored twelve best-selling books including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and her current best-seller A Song Flung Up to Heaven
    Mrs. Flowers took me to the library in the black school. The library was probably as large as a telephone booth. It may have had 110 books in it, maybe. She said, "I want you to read every book in this room." And I found poetry. And I loved it, I just loved it. I had no idea what it would sound like since I had never heard any recited, but I loved it. And I was able to translate it at 8, at 9, at 10. I consider that a lifeline, because finally, when I was about 12 and a half, almost 13, Mrs. Flowers who would allow me to come to her house and she would read to me when I was almost 13 she said, you will never really love poetry until you speak it, feel it come across your tongue, over your lips.

    Meet the Author
    Maya Angelou
    Although her career has included many years as an actress, singer, dancer, director, and producer on stage and on television, Maya Angelou is best known for her writing, particularly her autobiographical writing. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Stamps, Arkansas, by her grandmother, Angelou suffered tremendous hardships in her childhood and adolescence. By the time she was 17, she had a son and was living in San Francisco, California. There she became the city's first female African American streetcar conductor. After she started acting, Angelou began to write her own material. This work led her to meet the writer James Baldwin, who heard her tell stories about her childhood and challenged her to write them down. The result was the first volume of her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970), which covers her life up to age 16. Angelou followed this book with four other volumes of her life story, each covering a later period in her life. She is also an acclaimed poet. President Bill Clinton chose her to read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at his inauguration in 1993.
