In conjunction with the Sherwood Anderson Festival, the Smyth-Bland Regional Library will feature a unique and very special Sherwood Anderson exhibit from September through November, 2007. The exhibition will include Anderson’s first edition books, letters to Eleanor Copenhaver Anderson, original Anderson art, periodicals, newspapers, oral history collections, photos, the typewriter that Anderson used and which he took on the S.S. Santa Lucia to Chile where he died in 1941, and many other artifacts.
The Sherwood Anderson archive is the area of Smyth-Bland Regional Library dedicated to housing all Anderson artifacts. It is located on the ground floor beside the Rose Greer Akers reference area.
The Sherwood Anderson Archive of the Smyth-Bland Regional Library seeks to document the life and works of Sherwood Anderson. A real sense of Sherwood Anderson's presence still pervades Marion. The surrounding town and countryside were Sherwood Anderson's haunts during the last twelve years of his life. The Sherwood Anderson Archive in the Smyth-Bland Regional Library offers what other libraries cannot, immediate access to Sherwood Anderson’s world in Southwest Virginia. Sherwood spent his life searching for utopia and probably came closest to finding happiness in these mountains among the people he so enjoyed.

His father, a harness maker, moved the family around a great deal during Anderson's childhood in search of work. In 1894 the family settled in Clyde, Ohio, which probably served as the model for Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio , though Anderson claimed he had no particular town in mind. After working in a variety of jobs and serving in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War, Anderson married into a successful business family and began managing businesses himself in 1906. Six years later he left both business and family and moved to Chicago, where he began his literary career. In Chicago he met many writers involved in what became known as the "Chicago Renaissance," including Theodore Dreiser, Edgar Lee Masters, and Carl Sandburg. In 1916 he published his first novel

Sherwood Anderson
Sherwood Anderson was above all a story-teller, and in all of his writings he has left his readers a rich record of his life. Born in Camden, Ohio, he spent his first two decades in small towns of northern Ohio, especially Clyde, which became the setting for Winesburg, Ohio (1919), his best-known work. He dedicated Winesburg to his mother, “whose keen observations on the life about her first awoke in me the hunger to see beneath the surface of lives.”
This hunger to see hidden significance and beauty beneath the surface of lonely, often frustrated lives became Anderson’s main preoccupation as a writer, whether the setting is “Winesburg,” or “Bidwell,” as in his best novel, Poor White (1920), or described directly as Clyde in his three autobiographies

Sherwood Anderson - (1876-1941) Camden By Cindy Chang
Sycamore High School
Cincinnati, Ohio I. His Childhood What author influenced some of the most influential authors of all time such as Hemingway, Faulkner, Steinbeck, and Wolfe? That writer was Mr. Sherwood Anderson. He was born on September 13, 1876 in Camden, Ohio, the third of six children to Emma and Irwin Anderson. During the first years of his life, the family moved from village to village in Ohio. Due to Irwin's occupation as a harness maker it was necessary to be in constant search of a better paying opportunity, but their search ended when they finally settled in Clyde, Ohio (Hodgins 582). In his biography of Sherwood Anderson, Rex Burbank said "Clyde offered streams for fishing and swimming, beech woods for loafing and dreaming, and sprawling cornfields for the bucolic pleasures and furtive adventures of the small-town lad"(23). Growing up, however, Anderson found many flaws with the town. "Clyde lay stagnant between an exhausted agrarian era and a nascent industrial age…old men, young men, already failures in life-inspired ones, who from the beginning accepted failure-embraced it" (Burbank 23). Anderson would later express all this frustration and disappointment of a small town in his highly successful novel, Winesburg, Ohio.
