Pedagogy of the undressed: Sherwood Anderson's Kate Swift - from the 'Winesburg, Ohio' collection of short stories - Critical Essay
Studies in Short Fiction Fall, 1999 by Belinda Bruner Sherwood Anderson idealizes Kate Swift as "a tiny goddess on a pedestal" (160) (1) yet seemingly discards her once she has served her purpose. Critics tend to conclude that Anderson fails his female characters; Marilyn Judith Atlas points out that Anderson denies Kate Swift the kind of "ascension" toward a new life that he affords some of the male characters of Winesburg. (2) Kate is trapped within several female types, most notably, the modest, no-nonsense schoolteacher behind whom hides a sexual wildcat. Despite Anderson's attempts to define her and George's misunderstanding of her desire, in the role of the teacher she is at her most successful. By combining character analysis with critical pedagogy (3) in the context of Winesburg, Ohio, I aim to provide a thorough reading of Kate Swift as a teacher and to remain faithful to Anderson's explanation of Kate: "She was a teacher but she was also a woman" (164-65). Walter B. Rideout
    Introduction by Charles E. Modlin
"The ultimate biographical work on Sherwood Anderson. It has been long awaited by all in the Anderson circle, as well as by the general community of American literature specialists. It is a work that could not be written today because the most authentic sources, which Walter was able to tap, are simply no longer around." Sherwood Anderson: A Writer in America is the definitive biography of this major American writer of novels and short stories, whose work includes the modern classic Winesburg, Ohio . In the first volume of this monumental two-volume work, Walter Rideout chronicles the life of Anderson from his birth and his early business career through his beginnings as a writer and finally to his move in the mid-1920s to "Ripshin," his house near Marion, Virginia. The second volume covers Anderson's return to business pursuits, his extensive travels in the South touring factories, which resulted in his political involvement in labor struggles and several books on the topic, and finally his unexpected death in 1941.

SEE THE LITERARY WORK BY ANDERSON, SHERWOOD Anderson, Sherwood (1876 - 1941) Sherwood Anderson was born in Camden, Ohio. His parents led a transient life, moving from one place to another after work. His father had served in the Union Army and declined from the saddlery-and-harness business into odd jobs of house- and sign-painting. Anderson attended school only intermittently, while helping to support his family by working as a newsboy, housepainter, stock handler, and stable groom. At the age of 17 he moved to Chicago where he worked as a warehouse laborer and attended business classes at night. During the Spanish-American war Anderson fought in Cuba and returned after the war to Ohio, for a final year of schooling at Wittenberg College, Springfield. For the next few years Anderson moved restlessly around Ohio. His life calmed down for some time with marriage and with work as a paint manufacturer. After suffering an emotional crisis - more or less orchestrated by Anderson himself - because of the conflicting demands of his family, business and creative life, he left his wife, "bourgeois lifestyle", and moved to Chicago. There he took again a job in advertising and joined the so-called Chicago Group, which included such writers as Theodore Dreiser and Carl Sandburg.
