- "Harvest of Stars" series (some v,some x)
Introduction
Poul Anderson is one of Sci-fi's greats. He has claim to seven Hugos and three Nebula awards... an impressive total. While I am of the opinion that he can sometimes slip into overdescription of incidentals, I am also of the opinion that his works almost always provoke deep introspections and soaring emotions. Also, I must say that while I might care less about some of the sorts of details that Poul writes into his stories, other authors appreciate it in a different light.. To quote another of the greats: "Perhaps what really impressed me was the book's wealth of detail. Poul puts into a whole new world. Poul has traced a thousand trends, pulled them tightly together and created a masterpiece." If its good enough for Larry Niven (author of Ringworld, and Known Space) it has to be good eh?
Harvest of Stars
Title: Harvest of Stars
Rating: 4 3/4 Good stuff, makes you introspect, and lets you look at the forest without noticing the trees. Isn't that what good sci-fi should do?
Series: This novel precedes The Fleet Of Stars chronologically, however it is enjoyable reading the books of the series in reverse order. Don't worry about it.

Good (2/5)
I first read this in 1971 and most recently on the 15th June 2006. An alien spacecraft is orbiting Earth. It contains a solitary alien, the Sigman. The Sigman seems willing to try to communicate, but attempts at meaningful communication have so far been failures. On Earth meantime, young hippy Skip Wayburn has an idea about how to get through to the alien. Together with beautiful scientist Yvonne Cantor, he may be able to solve this mysterious communication puzzle. Not one of Anderson's greatest books, and certainly not one of my favourites. Loaded on the 29th March 2007.

Somewhat to my surprise, I was unable to recall anything about it as I read it, but at least that meant I could enjoy it without knowing the outcome! First published in 1958, 'The Enemy Stars' was slightly tidied-up by the author in the 1980s. I have the later version published by Baen in 1987, which comes with a short-story sequel 'The Ways of Love', first published in 1979.
It is slightly different from my expectations, in that it is primarily about people rather than the grand mind-stretching concepts more typical of the 1950s. The story is set in the twenty-third century. A long time before, a matter transmitter had been developed which enabled virtually instantaneous transmission between worlds. The catch was that a transceiver was needed at both ends, so one had to be carried out to each star system on board a conventional, sub-light-speed space ship. Since the voyages took decades if not centuries, the ships were crewed on a rotation basis using the on-board matter transceiver to change crews every month.
A disparate crew of four strangers, two from Earth, two from different colony planets (and all men), arrive on board the Southern Cross, a ship which had been travelling longer than any other. There are tensions from the start: the two Earthmen are from very different levels of a highly stratified and paternalistic society, ruled by a dictatorial world government. The colonials had their own agendas, as relationships between Earth and its colonies were fraught, with frequent rebellions.

Alexei Panshin's The Abyss of Wonder
POUL ANDERSON SAYS:

Jim Blish has expressed something I've felt for a long time: "most of the s-f, good or bad, that I have ever read has been weak on intellection." To be sure, my personal prejudices lead me to hold scientific speculation to be as valid and meaningful a form of intellection as "tackl(ing) a large philosophical question." But even the former has become vanishingly rare in science fiction, and the latter hardly ever was to be found. Certainly, if any of us feel like invading green pastures, almost a virgin field (I leave it to you to imagine the details of how one goes about being almost a virgin), philosophical fiction is waiting to be written.
Oddly, in all the discussion which has gone on for so many years about Heinlein, I don't recall ever seeing it mentioned how much of his work is this very sort of thing. Infinitely more so than, say, Bradbury, who's a nice guy and a talented writer but whose philosophy is epitomized in his belief that the highest foreseeable use for technology is the construction of electric grandmothers. You might or might not agree with Heinlein's particular views on a given subject, but dammit, Heinlein too "can plainly be seen to be thinking about something," and not just the engineering details of spacesuits either.
As a matter of fact, I myself take fairly violent exception to a lot of his philosophy. Also, though not for the customary reasons, views implicit in his recent "Starship Soldier."
