This, the darkest of the Dominic Flandry novels, deals with two of Flandry's relationships: with his illegitimate son, and with the second true love of his life. At the same time, the alien spy Aycharaych, working for/with the Merseian enemies of the Terran Empire, is sowing trouble, trying to use the cycles of human history to his advantage. By the time the book is over, Flandry has foiled his plots, but reached the nadir of his personal life....

Poul Anderson I wrote the first book, Harvest of Stars, and as I was writing it, I saw that certain implications had barely been touched on... It's perfectly obvious that two completely revolutionary things are going on, with cybernetics, and biological science. Poul Anderson In Harvest of Stars, there is this notion, not original with me of course, that it will become possible to download at least the basic aspects of a human personality into a machine program. A review by Rich Horton
Advertisement This is yet another posthumous novel by the late, great Poul Anderson. In the very early 90s, Anderson contributed two stories to the Isaac's Universe anthology series. These stories were set in a universe invented by Isaac Asimov, featuring humans and several alien races some centuries in the future. The various races occupy largely the same smallish area of the Galaxy, and they co-exist fairly peacefully. A key feature of the milieu was the presence of mysterious artifacts left by an older, vastly more powerful, race, the Hidden Folk. Anderson's stories were a novella, "The Burning Sky", and a novelette, "Woodcraft", both featuring a heroine named Laurice Windfell. As the author explains in a brief introduction

    Awful (0/5)
I first read this in November 2001. Scientists have discovered X-ray traces of alien spacecraft far past Zeta Centauri. A spaceship with a revolutionary engine is prepared to go and meet the alien civilisation. Commander Nansen and his crew, Deyn, Kilbirnie, Ruszek, Yu, Zeyd, Mokoena, Brent, Cleland and Sundaram, leave on the craft. For them only a few years will pass, whilst millennia will slip by on Earth. This should have been a great story: slam a bunch of very different personalities into a confined space and see what happens. This methodology consistently generates bizarrely interesting results in the Motown Bar in Roppongi every a Friday night. It was, however, a hopeless failure in " Starfarers ". I just didn't care about the any of the characters. I would have popped Kilbirnie, Cleland and Brent out of the airlock within thirty minutes of take-off, and I was so uninterested in the character development that I would have done the same for the rest within a day. Then I could have sat back and enjoyed the fairly interesting events that occurred during the ship's voyage. But then I haven't really thought too much of Poul Anderson since "The Guardians of Time". That was a great read but it was a very long time ago and either Anderson's writing has deteriorated or I'm older and wiser than I was then.

    Orbit Unlimited by Poul Anderson
Orbit Unlimited is a book by Poul Anderson, published in 1961; I'm not sure whether to call it a connected short story collection or a fix-up novel. In either case, it is a hard science fiction story that tells the tale of the colonization of the distant Earthlike world of Rustum by a band of exiles. The government is plagued by a small group called the Constitutionalists, political and philosophical dissidents opposed to the Guardians. When the government decides to stamp out the Constitutionalist menace by shutting down their private schools and instituting compulsory public education in order to indoctrinate their children, the Constitutionalists threaten revolt. Though few in number, their overrepresentation in technical fields makes them a serious problem. With a showdown inevitable, a compromise is reached: the leading Constitutionalists will leave, using Earth's space fleet to colonize Rustum, a newly discovered habitable world orbiting e Eridani. With no hope for freedom remaining on Earth, a few daring souls accept and flee to the stars. The main characters of the story are:

The Boat of A Million Years
Poul Anderson Now in trade paperback, the landmark epic by one of the greatest SF writers of the century
Trade Paperback Buy Tell a Friend Print Poul Anderson
    Book Description
Others have written SF on the theme of immortality, but in The Boat of a Million Years , Poul Anderson made it his own. Early in human history, certain individuals were born who live on, unaging, undying, through the centuries and millenia. We follow them through over 2000 years, up to our time and beyond-to the promise of utopia, and to the challenge of the stars.
A milestone in modern science fiction, a New York Times Notable Book on its first publication in 1989, this is one of a great writer's finest works.
    About the Author
The bestselling author of such classic novels as Brain Wave and The Boat of a Million Years Poul Anderson won just about every award the science fiction and fantasy field has to offer. He won multiple Hugos and Nebulas, the John W. Campbell Award, The Locus Poll Award, the Skylark Award, and the SFWA Grandmaster Award for Lifetime Achievement. His later books include Harvest of Stars, The Stars are Also Fire, Operation Luna, Genesis, Mother of Kings
