23. Poul Anderson - An Essay By William Tenn

Poul Anderson
Originally appeared in Locus,
reprinted in Dancing Naked, the Unexpurgated William Tenn I could, for instance, begin with Poul as I became aware of him in the beginnings. That was when he published his first story, "Tomorrow's Children," (co-written with F. N. Waldrop) in the same 1947 issue of John W. Campbell's Astounding as my second story, "Child's Play." Now "Child's Play" was the absolute best I'd been able to write up to that moment. And I would have to tell about Campbell informing me that the readers seemed equally divided in their favorable opinions of the two pieces, something that filled me with chagrin tussling with admiration. Or I could begin equally validly with the parrot. When I was invited to be the guest of honor at the 1980 Westercon, Penn State granted me a research term off. Karen and Poul heard that Fruma and I were shopping for a Bay Area apartment and were being asked for an arm and leg (each) as basic rental. They were going abroad for a couple of months, and insisted we take over their Orinda home, rent-free, for the period. All they asked was that we take care of their aged parrot, and water the lawn from time to time. Fruma and I sang out "Deal! Deal!" and cavorted all the way to California. The house and grounds were prettier than we had dreamed of, there was a wonderful little playground nearby for our four-year-old daughter, and Poul's study and their immense library were at my disposal, with a complete set of Kipling to roam in as well as all the Scandinavian mythology and Northman cultural minutiae a Jewboy from Brooklyn could ever have dreamed of.

Poul Anderson news
Election time is a depressing time of year for a libertarian like me, butnot everything in life is doom and gloom. On the science fiction front, there's very good news on the Baen Books publishing schedule: March 2007 will see the release of another Poul Anderson collection, To Outlive Eternity and Other Stories. The site doesn't say what the contents are, aside from the title story. I don't know if I'll be buying one for myself- it's probably superfluous in my case, thanks to my voluminous Poul Anderson collection- but I definitely expect to be buying a copy or two for the other geeks in my life, who are woefully ignorant of the classics. Hopefully there will be more to come. In other Poul Anderson news, the Wikipedia entry for Poul Anderson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poul_Anderson has been greatly expanded and improved since the last time I saw it. If you're not familiar with his work, check it out. He's a truly great and underrated author, and a lot of his work is of particular interest to libertarians.

Contact Us Broken In Two Poul Anderson's two versions of The Broken Sword By Ryan Harvey A fierce warrior, magically born from a troll mother in the shape of a man, leads a troll army against the might of the elves. He stares at the troll king and mutters to himself: "I will succeed to your throne—but what good is that? What good is anything?" Thus speaks Valgard, half of the protagonist of The Broken Sword . His words contain ambition contradicted with hopelessness. This utterance captures the overall tone of Poul Anderson's influential fantasy masterpiece. Like the blade of the title, the novel is a collection of objects divided into separate, incompatible parts. Valgard is half of the protagonist, a tragic duo whose life plays out as a black joke from the gods. Heroes battle valiantly to spill the blood of their foes, but know that destiny will eventually eradicate them as if they never existed. The narrative sways between a realistic Norse setting inspired by historical sagas and a blurry faerie-realm of elvish wars. Finally, the text itself is snapped into two almost equal, yet intriguingly different, versions: the original publication, and the author's own revision seventeen years later.

Acclaimed science fiction writer Poul Anderson was born in Bristol, Pennsylvania in 1926. After earning a degree in physics from the University of Minnesota, he moved to San Francisco where he lived for the rest of his life with his wife and writing partner Karen.
Anderson was a prolific writer, with over 100 novels to his credit. His unique perspective was one informed by a deep understanding of science as well as an interest in Norse mythology. While he wrote fantasy novels, including The Broken Sword (1954), Three Hearts and Three Lions (1961) and A Midsummer Tempest (1974), his reputation rests primarily on the strength of his science fiction. His first SF novel was 1954's Brainwave, and it is considered by many to be a classic of the genre. He often wrote series of novels, including the popular "Time Patrol" works, beginning with 1981's Guardians of Time. He also wrote novellas and many short stories over the course of his writing career.
His works won numerous science fiction prizes including three Hugo and seven Nebula awards, but it is perhaps for his 1970 novel Tau Zero that he will be best remembered. A member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame and winner of the Science Fiction Writers' Association's prestigious Grandmaster Award, Anderson continued to write engaging and masterful science fiction novels right up to his death in 2001. His last novel, Genesis, won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best science fiction novel of the year 2000.

Goat Song, by Poul Anderson
Review by Nicholas Whyte
Fantasy and Science Fiction
"Goat Song" is at first sight a retelling of the Orpheus myth (the title is a literal translation of the Greek phrase which became the English word "tragedy"). The narrator is a singer of old songs from Earth's distant past; his lover has died; the world is controlled by the computer known as SUM, which communicates with its inhabitants via a beautiful spokeswoman, and which also stores the personalities of the deceased in preparation for a future resurrection. Our hero seduces the spokeswoman and is allowed to enter the castle where SUM is located to ask for the return of his woman. His request is granted, subject to the condition that he must not look back as he leaves the castle. He looks back; and loses her. On his return to the outside world, he preaches revolution against the machines, and finally sacrifices himself to the female followers of a primitivist cult.
Anderson is quite a difficult author to grasp. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction notes that "With dozens of novels and hundreds of stories to his credit all written with a resolute professionalism and widening range, though also with a marked disparity between copious storytelling skills and a certain banality in the creation of characters [Anderson] is still not as well defined a figure in the pantheon of US sf as writers (like Isaac Asimov from the Golden Age of SF and Frank Herbert from a decade later) of about the same age and certainly no greater skill." Part of the problem for me is the way he packed so much material into all of his stories. For instance

Biographical Note
Poul Anderson was born November 25th, 1926, in Bristol, PA. He lived in Port Arthur, Texas for a decade, then in Denmark, Maryland, and finally Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota, earning a bachelors degree in Physics, and selling his first science fiction story in 1947 while still an undergraduate. By 1948, he was a full-time freelance writer, his profession for the rest of his life. Anderson was highly regarded in science fiction and fantasy. He was honored with seven Hugo Awards, three Nebula Awards, a variety of other awards, and was named "Grand Master" of the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1997/1998. A 1981 entry in the Dictionary of Literary Biography called him "one of the five or six most important writers to appear during the science-fiction publishing boom of the decade following the end of World War II." Anderson used his scientific training to write technically accurate science fiction, to project plausible future technologies, and to be regarded as an outstanding "hard science fiction" writer. He also wrote highly regarded fantasies, and viewed much of his own work more in the realm of magical realism than anything else. Anderson died in 2001 at age 74.

Religion in the fiction of Poul Anderson
Much of Poul Anderson's fiction is set in his "Technic Civilization" universe. Nicholas van Rijn and his associates are important characters in many of these stories. One of his contemporaries, and perhaps a competitor, is Martin Schuster, the master trader in "The Three-cornered Wheel" (the first part of The Trouble Twisters ). Schuster knows and respects Jewish traditions. He uses his knowledge of the Kabbalah to deal with the theocracy that the protagonists confront. Centuries later, but in the same universe, we find Admiral Juan Cajal of the Terran Empire. Cajal commands the attack on the Domain of Ythri in The People of the Wind . Cajal is a devout Roman Catholic, and is portrayed very sympathetically in a story that is more a conflict more of good against good than of good against evil. Anderson's fantasy provides a variety of other interesting examples. The novel Three Hearts and Three Lions is based on the myths of Catholic medieval Europe. The symbols of Catholic Christianity are an important part of the forces of law (the good side, opposed to "chaos") in that story. At the end of the story Holger Carlsen, the Danish hero, is received into the Roman Catholic Church. Anderson has linked characters from several of his series in the taproom of The Old Phoenix , and there Holger Carlsen meets Prince Rupert of the Rhine, hero of A Midsummer Tempest.

  • Poul Anderson , interview from 1997 During the 40s, 50s, and 60s fantasy was mainly written by science fiction-authors. John W. Campbell started the magazine " Unknown " 1939 and of the authors that earlier had published stories in " Astounding " published fantasy-stories in this magazine. Science fiction and fantasy was very stronglt connected, but when Tolkien appeared on the scene, fantasy was seen as a genre of its own. The american Poul (William) Anderson (1926-2001) was one of those authors who both wrote fantasy and SF. His first piece of fantasy was The Broken Sword (1954) which based on much things out of the scandinavian mythology. The story is dark and the mortal ones are been used by the gods, who are afraid that the mortals shall see the real power they have, and destroy the gods.
    Three Hearts and Three Lions
(1953) is a somewhat lighter story about Holger who reluctantly becomes a hero when he is transefered to a darker world and there ends up in the battle between the gods. A Midsummer Tempest was the name of the sequel which appeared 1974.
