Belated Reviews #27: Poul Anderson
Poul Anderson's been writing for over four decades, and as books such as his recent "The Boat of a Million Years" indicate, he's still producing significant work. His best books, however, appeared between the mid-fifties and the mid-seventies (IMO, of course, but so's everything I write here), and there is a good chance that many newer readers will be unaware of them. It's difficult for me to characterize Anderson's work, largely because there's so much of it, of so many types. Anderson's no stylist; his prose is...competent. What his best books seem to have in common is a combination of imagination and integrity. He typically takes a couple of interesting ideas however improbable and then uses them as a foundation for honest story-telling. (Too many authors are content with a stream of clever ideas or one idea, tested to destruction and don't bother with the honest story-telling. Others and this is also true of Anderson, in his more pedestrian adventure fiction try to do without that special leap of imagination.) Sometimes the story doesn't work, or the imaginative foundation is simply not strong enough, but when it does work, we get books like: "The High Crusade" (***+). Earth should have easy to terrorize and conquer, but the Wersgorix ship that landed in England in 1345 got sloppy and unlucky. It was captured by the local baron who loaded his army aboard (loaded his entire village aboard) with the intention of using the ship to retake Jerusalem. He thought he was thinking big. When the ship's navigator locked in a course for the Wersgorix empire instead, Sir Roger was left with no alternatives but to surrender or to take on an interstellar empire. But then, Sir Roger had more swords at his command than they did.

Profiled by Galen Strickland Poul William Anderson (1926-2001) - born in Pennsylvania of Scandanavian lineage, he lived for a short period of time in Denmark before WW 2, and resided in California with his wife (and sometimes writing partner) Karen until his recent death of prostate cancer. I may be mistaken, but I believe his first name is pronounced with two syllables - "Poe-uhl." He is difficult to classify, as he had been tremendously prolific in both the science fiction and fantasy genres, and many of his works are a melding of the two. He created no less than seven distinct fictional sequences, two of them in collaboration with other authors, as well as a host of short stories not connected with any of these sequences, and dozens of singleton novels. Photo by Beth Gwinn
from Locus Online His scientific literacy is probably exceeded in the genre by only Asimov and Clarke , whereas the traditions of his ancestral heritage embues much of his work with a profound humanistic and libertarian philosophy, reminiscent of the best of vintage Heinlein . I would rank him higher in the SF heirarchy if not for what I consider his one shortcoming; the inability to create (with just a couple of exceptions) well-rounded, distinctively identifiable and believable characters. Even with that, I would still have to say that his galaxy-spanning narratives and hard-SF scenarios never overlook or overshadow the personal and emotional impact on his protagonists.

anderson of terra Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Poul Anderson was one of the pulp science fiction masters of the '50's and '60's. He's been eclipsed in recent years, and hasn't maintained his popularity the way, say, Robert A. Heinlein has....but he's still written some very good stuff. I've never attempted to build a complete collection of Anderson's books, but there are a few titles I cherish, and pull out periodically when I need a lift. My favorite is The High Crusade , a space opera with a difference. An army has gathered in a little town in 14th Century England prior to embarking upon an expedition to France when an alien space ship lands. The residents, taking the blue-skinned aliens for demons, attack and take over the ship, requiring their sole captive to fly them to France, and then the Holy Land. Instead, the captive takes them to the nearest alien home world, where extremely funny mayhem ensues. It's witty, silly, and a complete hoot. Three Hearts and Three Lions is another gem, about a 20th century man who finds that he is the reincarnation of one of Charlemagne's herioc companions...and that France has need of him once again. I'm told this book partly inspired

Classic Hard Science Fiction
Anderson is probably best known for adventure stories in which larger-than-life characters succeed gleefully or fail heroically. He also wrote some quieter works, generally of shorter length, which appeared more during the latter part of his career. However, Anderson was seldom interested in psychological analysis. Much of his science fiction is thoroughly grounded in science (with the addition of dubious but standard speculations such as faster-than-light travel). A specialty was imagining scientifically plausible non-Earthlike planets. Perhaps the best known was the planet of The Man Who Counts Wikipedia article

Executive summary: Tau Zero Poul Anderson is remembered as one of the most imaginative and hugely prolific authors of science fiction’s Golden Age, yet his solid body of work spans several decades beyond. The winner or nominee of at least 30 major science fiction awards, he produced some 70 novels, many which ( Tau Zero Brain Wave The High Crusade and Three Hearts and Three Lions ), continue to be popular today, despite the glut of more recent authors. The published author of over 100 short stories (plus novellas and novelettes and even a handful of chapbooks), Anderson's work has appeared in scores of anthologies. In the early days of science fiction many of them made their first appearence in such pulp fiction magazines as Amazing Analog Fantastic Stories , and Astounding Born November 25, 1926, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, Anderson grew up in Minnesota and Texas. It was in 1947, while still as student at the University of Minnesota that he published his first story. In 1948 he graduated with a B.S. in physics and in 1953 he married fellow science fiction writer Karen Kruse. The couple later settled in the San Francisco area.

Poul Anderson "Ensign Flandry"
Poul Anderson at his best reads like poetry and wonderfully romantic space fiction, and at his worst fails to make any impression at all. His output quality was uneven and many stories are quite forgettable, but for the sheer volume of exalted "space romance" masterpieces he should be entered into the "Space Adventure Hall of Fame" on par with Hamilton and Smith, as he almost single-handedly "carried the torch" of space opera through the 60s and 70s. His fiction is very often great fun, has impressive visuals and speaks of glorious, endless exploration (his fondness for space roaming probably came from his Nordic Viking roots). My favorite Poul Anderson's story is "Gypsy", later expanded into "Star Ways" Poul Anderson "Ensign Flandry" (nv) (Dominic Flandry series) Amazing, Oct 1966
