An Interview with NY Times Bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson Interviewed by Byron Merritt Kevin J. Anderson
FWOMP: Writing is hard work! What in God's name made you want to be a fiction writer? Kevin Anderson: Fame...Fortune...Stupidity...
Actually, I had the bug since I was a little kid and I ALWAYS wanted to be a writer. I never thought it would be such a long road with so many hurdles to get over. But I can't imagine myself doing any other career. FWOMP: When did you first realize that you were a successful author? How did it make you feel? Kevin Anderson: Hmm, sometimes I wonder if I'm "successful" enough yet—I keep seeing so many mountains to climb, so many aspirations still to do. Even after 30 bestsellers, 84 books published, translated into 29 different languages, setting the Guinness World Record for largest book signing . . . I can still stop a random person in the grocery store and most of the time they won't have any clue who I am. I guess the first "realization" that I was a successful author was when I calculated that I could support myself and pay the bills by writing instead of doing some other job. FWOMP: What does a basic Kevin J. Anderson writing day consist of?

Kevin worked in California for twelve years as a technical writer and editor at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, one of the nation's largest research facilities. At the Livermore Lab, he met his wife Rebecca Moesta and also his frequent co-author, Doug Beason. After he had published ten of his own science fiction novels to wide critical acclaim, he came to the attention of Lucasfilm, and was offered the chance to write Star Wars novels. Gwen's parents have died in a strange accident, and Vic's mother has mysteriously disappeared, so Vic's scientist father, Cap, is raising the teens. After a near tragic experience with a killer whale for Gwen at Ocean Kingdoms and the uninvited attention of a sinister stranger, danger closes in on the cousins. When they inadvertently walk into the middle of Cap's experiment involving a precise arrangement of exotic crystals, Gwen and Vic are transported to the world of Elantya, filled with both magic and mayhem. The teens find themselves in the middle of a conflict involving sages, sea-dwelling merlons, and sea monsters who battle over control of land and sea. Vic and Gwen realize that the legacy of their mothers crosses boundaries between the two worlds, and their newly discovered powers will be crucial in battles to come.

Dogged Persistence by Kevin J. Anderson Published by Golden Gryphon 303 pages, 2001 Buy it online Dogged Dichotomies I hate dichotomies. I find the idea that the world should be perceived in a binary on/off mode ridiculous, sophistic and insulting. Dichotomic argumentation is a manipulative tool used by orators and essayists desperate to win over their audience. They mask the weaknesses of their positions by setting up binary oppositions, often in emotionally charged rhetoric, that seek to obscure options that lie beyond their discourse of opposites in conflict. Burning fossil fuels or economic collapse? Heterosexual marriage and reproduction or homosexuality and AIDS? Instinctual or cultural? Feminist or sexist? Free-market conservative or totalitarian communist? Unlike what many would like us all to believe, rejecting one of these extremes does not equate embracing its supposed opposite. The world is much more complex than that. And what does all that have to do with Kevin J. Anderson 's story collection, Dogged Persistence Rusch builds her argument with several questionable assertions. For example, "famous old classics ... were the bestsellers of their day." Such as H.P. Lovecraft, whose books first came out after his death? Or that "drive" is synonymous with "being prolific." Was Franz Kafka, whose small output was obscure during his lifetime but grew to have an indelible influence on art and culture, not a driven writer? Or that being efficient is a sign of a great writer. Sure, there are many examples that back up Rusch's claims (Dickens, Dumas, etc.), but prolific bestsellerdom is not a sure path to posterity (I'll push aside the question of quality), as scanning the
