About the Author

Gail Anderson-Dargatz, whose fictional style has been coined as "Pacific Northwest Gothic" by the Boston Globe A Recipe for Bees and The Cure for Death by Lighting were international bestsellers, published worldwide in English and in many other languages, and were both short-listed for the prestigious Giller Prize in Canada. The Cure for Death by Lightning A Rhinestone Button was a national bestseller in Canada and her first book, The Miss Hereford Stories , was short-listed for the Leacock Award for humour. Her mother, who also wrote, instilled literary confidence in Gail, so that by the age of eighteen, Gail knew she wanted to be the next Margaret Laurence, writing about Canadian women in rural settings. Anderson-Dargatz was born in Salmon Arm British Columbia Her first novel, The Cure for Death by Lightning (1996), was an experimental yet accessible work whose story unfolded partly through narrative and partly through a collection of recipes and household tips belonging to the narrator's mother. It was a Canadian bestseller that year, making Anderson-Dargatz one of the most popular new names in Canadian literature . The novel was nominated for the Giller Prize and was awarded the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize Her latest novel, Turtle Valley (2007), is set near Salmon Arm during a forest fire and tells the story of Kat, a woman who faces the challenge of simultaneously caring for her aging parents, young child and ill husband. It was inspired by the 1998 Salmon Arm fire, which the author had to evacuate her parents from. A major focus of the novel is "to give a unflinching portrait of the caregiver, how very hard it is on the caregiver and on all family relationships."

INTERVIEW
February 18, 2000

Although you may not have heard of her yet, author Gail Anderson-Dargatz is not new to fiction writing, she's already a bestselling author in Canada and has been published in the UK. Now, luckily for us, we can enjoy her compassionate characters and poignant prose in her novel A RECIPE FOR BEES. This book backtracks through the life of main character Augusta and her family, as they struggle over land, love, and ultimately for life. TBR Senior Writer Jana Siciliano asks Dargatz about the autobiographical aspects of her novel, her intimate relationship with bees, her thoughts on marriage, love, and prejudice then and now in this telling interview.
TBR: Please explain, for those who aren't as familiar with your book, how closely related A RECIPE FOR BEES is to your actual life experiences?
GAD:
TBR: How is the story of Karl and Augusta fashioned after your own parents? And how did this book bring them back together after having been divorced for years?

Biographical Sketch
Born in Kamloops, British Columbia in 1963, Gail Anderson-Dargatz is a novelist and short-story writer who grew up in the Shuswap region of rural British Columbia. After beginning her career as a journalist, Gail Anderson-Dargatz enrolled in the creative writing program at the University of Victoria where she studied with Jack Hodgins. She went on to receive a B.A. in creative writing in 1998 having already received nominations for a number of prominent awards for fiction. Gail Anderson-Dargatz draws on details of rural life and on events in her own life or the lives of others when creating her works of fiction: in particular The Miss Hereford Stories and her two popular novels The Cure for Death By Lightning and A Recipe for Bees . In keeping with her roots as a reporter, much of the background work of her fiction is based on personal interviews. Anderson-Dargatz won the CBC Radio Literary Awards First Prize for Short Fiction (1993) for her story "The Girl with the Bell Necklace;" she was short-listed for the Stephen Leacock Award (1995) for

http://www.bcbookworld.com/vancity/gailandersondargatz.html
"Dunk the dead by lightning in a cold water bath for two hours and if still dead, add vinegar and soak for an hour more." from The Cure for Death by Lightning
"My mother was hit by lightning when she was a girl," she recalled in 1996. "She talked about ghosts and premonitions. I was surrounded by stories of a time that completely disappeared." Anderson-Dargatz does for the family farm or ranch in B.C. what many authors have already done for rural life in the prairies or smalltown life in Ontario, magnifying the elements of life that are special, revealing, in that process, some of the psychology of the region.
From the work of born-and-raised-in-B.C. novelists such as Anderson-Dargatz, Jack Hodgins and Anne Cameron, it's possible to surmise that constancy is not an option in British Columbia. It is a place for conflicts, epiphanies and assorted transformations.

Books Which I Have Read
#9 Anderson-Dargatz, Gail. A Rhinestone Button [3/06] (6.5) (For book club)
I started out liking this book, especially the main character, Job. I was charmed by his sweetness and innocence, and fascinated by his synthenasia, which is a condition where an individual sees sound as colours. Job lives on the family farm where he looks after the animals, helps out his neighbours, bakes as well as any woman in the community, and goes to church regularly.
When his down-on-his-luck, freeloading, lazy brother shows up with his shrew of a wife and shady son (wow - how's that for an unbiased opinion?), things take a turn for the worse. It's as if Job's uncomplicated, quiet life gets snatched away and replaced by the stress and pressure his brother bring to bear on him. Part of it is the brother's fault - he wants a quick solution handed to him, but doesn't want to fix the long term problems, but Job shares part of the blame, too. Job never stands up to them, never fights back, and never, ever, speaks his mind. He goes along with everything, even if privately he is ill-disposed towards it.
There was something of the biblical to this story. Was Job's faith being tested, like his namesake? And how did he fare? And what the hell was with all the water fowl in the story? Was there some oblique reference to Job's ability to not let things get to him too much, like the proverbial water on the proverbial duck's back?
