      • UK Monday, 14 October 2002 THREE TIMES over, in the Ambrose family of central Wisconsin, the eldest son followed in his father's footsteps as a country doctor. Stephen Ambrose, as an eldest son, grew up knowing he would be a country doctor too, and went up to Wisconsin State University at Madison to read Medicine. His tutor told him he had to take one non-medical subject in his first year; he picked history from a list, without looking at it. The history tutor told him to write an essay on Hugh Trevor-Roper's The Last Days of Hitler . Ambrose came back with the essay, and a demand to change faculties; thereafter he devoted himself to history, and became a prolific historical author as well as a university professor.

    Remembering Stephen Ambrose
    George McGovern
When Stephen Ambrose telephoned me at my summer home in the Rockies of Montana to tell me that doctors had discovered advanced stage cancer in both of his lungs, it was clear that a lifetime of heavy smoking had claimed its fatal due. But as usual, Steve's response was disciplined and purposeful. "I've asked myself if I have two months or two years to live how do I want to use that time?" Then he added, "I've had a wonderful life writing books. Next to Moira and my family that is what I love most; so I'm going to write another book and I'm going to call it A Love Song to America ." It later became To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian , probably at the suggestion of Alice Mayhew of Simon and Schusterhis editor whom he justifiably admired. But the book is "a love song to America" with all its virtues and vices. Steve Ambrose was first and last a fervent patriot. He loved America from the depth of his soul. If he now is ensconced in heaven, he has probably told St. Peter that it's a nice placesecond only to the United States of America. Old friends, Steven Ambrose (left) and George McGovern, reminisce and discuss Ambrose's new book

Photo by Photos by Kevin Willey
For much of this year and the last, author-historians Stephen Ambrose and Douglas Brinkley traveled "our national river" for their upcoming National Geographic Society book
Mississippi: River of History . Beginning with the river's mouth in Louisiana, their journey much of it aboard the Delta Queen steamboat extended all the way to the Mississippi's headwaters in Lake Itasca, Minn. Photographer Sam Abell joined Ambrose and Brinkley to recount the history and portray the modern life of what T.S. Eliot once called the "strong brown god." In the following excerpts from their travel journals, Ambrose and Brinkley enter the United States through its Gulf gateway, discuss Thomas Jefferson's great land bargain, and offer a candidate for poet laureate of New Orleans. It was March, the rest of New Orleans was recuperating from Mardi Gras, and we were hovering in an Astar 350-2 Helicopter 600 feet above land, the doors removed, at a speed of 70 knots over the bountiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Our pilot was Jere Cobb, a tough, muscular 65-year-old ex-Marine who worked for NASA from 1963 to 1977 training the Apollo astronauts how to carefully land their lunar modules on the moon.

    Band of Brothers
Executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks tell the moving story of elite World War Two paratrooper unit, Easy Company. Based on the book by the late Stephen E Ambrose, the series depicts the epic journey made by the paratrooper unit from their training camp in Georgia, right through to their D-Day triumph.   The paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines in 1944 and fight numerous battles across Europe until they eventually capture Hitler's mountain eyrie at Berchtesgarden. When Tom Hanks read Stephen E Ambrose's true history of Easy Company, he immediately felt that it would make an outstanding TV series. Hanks teamed up with Steven Spielberg, with whom he'd just made Saving Private Ryan. This formidably talented pair went to industry-leading, US TV company, HBO to try and get Band of Brothers off the ground. Confronted by the multi-Oscar award-winning duo, HBO at once agreed to back the project to the tune of $120m, making it the most expensive TV series ever produced.

Converted for the Web from " The Victors: Eisenhower and His Boys: The Men of World War II " by Stephen E. Ambrose The Cliff The Cannons It was a nearly 100-meter-high cliff, with perpendicular sides jutting out into the Channel. It looked down on Utah Beach to the left and Omaha Beach to the right. There were six 155mm cannon in heavily reinforced concrete bunkers that were capable of hitting either beach with their big shells. On the outermost edge of the cliff, the Germans had an elaborate, well-protected outpost, where the spotters had a perfect view and could call back coordinates to the gunners at the 155s. Those guns had to be neutralized. The Allied bombardment of Pointe-du-Hoc had begun weeks before D-Day . Heavy bombers from the U.S. Eighth Air Force and British Bomber Command had repeatedly plastered the area, with a climax coming before dawn on June 6. Then the battleship Texas took up the action, sending dozens of 14-inch shells into the position. Altogether, Pointe-du-Hoc got hit by more than ten kilotons of high explosives, the equivalent of the explosive power of the atomic bomb used at Hiroshima. Texas lifted her fire at 0630, the moment the rangers were scheduled to touch down. Col. James Earl Rudder was in the lead boat. He was not supposed to be there. Lt. Gen. Clarence Huebner, CO of the 1st Division and in overall command at

At the end of the 1999 school year, then freshman Lara Marks wrote her final paper for the Hewlett American Studies class on Lewis and Clark. In this paper, she offered proof that author Stephen Ambrose had plagiarized several paragraphs in his book Undaunted Courage.
Over the past several weeks, documented proof that Ambrose had plagiarized many phrases in a multitude of his best-selling novels in recent years has caught the nation's attention. Such claims rang very familiar to Marks, who is now a senior majoring in History and American Culture Studies.
The Hewlett American Studies class on Lewis and Clark functioned on a two-semester system. In the fall, the students read many primary sources and the original journals of Lewis and Clark. Then, in the spring, the class focus changed as students read Ambrose's popular Undaunted Courage. History professor David Konig challenged his students to decide whether Ambrose's novel was work of history or historical fiction.

Help Stephen Ambrose - Passes Away at Age 66 A historian who made studying history popular. by Jennifer Rosenberg I have to admit, Stephen Ambrose was an idol of mine. During a time when historians were usually thought of as quiet men sitting behind desks writing only for other historians, Ambrose managed to break through the stereotype. He found a way to bring history to everyday people. He made studying history a popular pastime. It seemed that nearly ever time I went to the bookstore, I would find a fascinating new book by Ambrose. Even if it wasn't on a topic I am usually interested in, by the time I picked it up, his friendly prose and interesting facts drew me in every time. And did you ever hear him speak? His husky voice (now I realize, probably caused by the decades of smoking) was mesmerizing as his passion for the people and the past made history come alive. Stephen Ambrose was born on January 10, 1936, in Decatur, Illinois but spent his childhood in the small town of Whitewater, Wisconsin. The town was a little too small for Ambrose, so he was excited about heading off to college to study pre-med, preparing to follow in his father's footsteps and become a medical doctor. However, his future changed drastically when he took a history class from William B. Hesseltine entitled "Representative Americans." Fascinated by Hesseltine's lecturing style, which made the story come alive, Ambrose quickly changed his major to history and graduated with a B.A. in 1957.
