  • Jorge Amado 1912–
Brazilian novelist, short story writer, and nonfiction writer. The following entry presents an overview of Amado's career. For further information on his life and works, see CLC , Volumes 13 and 40.
    INTRODUCTION
Jorge Amado is a best-selling author known for his novels which evoke the spirit of the people of Bahia, Brazil. A communist in an authoritarian-ruled nation, Amado spent many years fleeing government persecution and espousing communist ideals in his novels. Eventually Amado became disenchanted with the Communist Party and wrote from a more personal perspective about his region and its people. He became a well-loved national and much-acclaimed international novelist.
    Biographical Information
Amado was born in Ilheus, Bahia, Brazil, on August 10, 1912. He grew up on his father's cocoa plantation and then attended a Jesuit boarding school. While interested in classical literature, Amado found it hard to concentrate on his studies. In 1930 Amado went to Rio de Janeiro to attend law school, where he earned a diploma which he never bothered to pick up. Amado published his first novel, O paiz do carnaval (1931), when he was nineteen. His second novel

    http://www.skylight.com.br/tieta/ti-400.htm
J orge Amado is the greatest novelist in Brazil. His works convey the essence and colour of Bahia, with a profound knowledge of the Brazilian soul. Besides Tieta do Agreste , he has created a number of powerful female characters such as Gabriela and Dona Flor, the adaptations of which brought Sonia Braga her first success.
T ieta do Agreste displays his close awareness of the reality of the Bahian interior: people struggling to survive, defending or resisting prejudices while struggling to attain meagre ambitions. The book builds a vivid picture of the provincial conflicts which precede the arrival of signs of progress and its consequences.
J orge Amado gave his full blessing to the enterprise, even appearing at the beginning of the film reading the book's first paragraph and at the end his voice returns to read the last line. He left director Diegues completely free to adapt the novel as he saw fit, saying "You didn't interfere in my book and I won't interfere in your film."
T he most translated contemporary Brazilian author, the list of Jorge Amado's books adapted for the cinema, TV and theatre is long, including Tenda dos Milagres Jubiaba Dona Flor e seus dois maridos and Gabriela

Alfred A. Knopf, New York: 1945.
First U.S. Edition. Former owners name and date on front free endpaper. Front hinge somewhat tender. Jacket price clipped. Small nicks at corners and top and bottom of spine. Slight shelfwear and sunning. Book very good in a like jacket. Jorge Amado was a novelist whose stories of life in the Brazilian northeast won international acclaim. Amado grew up on a cacao plantation, AuricÌdia, and was educated at the Jesuit college in Salvador and studied law at Federal University in Rio de Janeiro. He published his first novel at age 19. Three of his early works deal with the cacao plantations, emphasizing the exploitation and the misery of the migrant blacks, mulattoes, and poor whites who harvest the crop and generally expressing communist solutions to social problems. The best of these works, Terras do sem fim (1942; The Violent Land), about the struggle of rival planters, has the primitive grandeur of a folk saga.

Brazilian novelist. His first novel, (1932), follows a youthful member of the intelligentsia seeking political answers in the wake of the revolution of 1930. Amado's next few novels outlined his personal manifesto and highlighted the cause of various exploited groups in society. (1952) marked a change in style and emphasis and focused on sociopolitical change. Subsequent books, such as (1966) and (1976) show equal social awareness and compassion, but are more subtle, and use irony to good effect. hut(1)
