Clay by David Almond
Clay by David Almond . Copy from library.
The Plot: Davie is an altar boy, living in a small town in England when he first sees Stephen. Before this, it is a typical boyhood; a flirtation with a girl at school, a best friend, a rivalry with the kids from the next town that is a self described "war". But after Stephen arrives, a strange boy living with Crazy Mary , things change. Stephen makes things out of clay. And says he can make them live.
Are they alive? Davie is drawn to Stephen, to this power he has, and other things fall by the wayside. The pretty girl, his best friend. But the war with Martin "Mouldy" Mould only escalates. Stephen's answer? Create a man of clay to take care of Mouldy.
The Good: I adore David Almond. Straight up, let's get that out of the way. Love him. Love his books. So of course this gets onto my Best Books of 2006 list.

Of course, the term overnight sensation is ironic since he had been writing for over twenty years to critical acclaim for his adult work before achieving widespread praise and popularity for his first childrens book. Born May 15, 1951, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to James and Catherine Almond, Almond grew up in the neighboring Felling-on-Tyne. He was surrounded by relatives, including four sisters and one brother, and he spent his early childhood in a large, staunchly Catholic family. Catherine took her new son to visit an uncles printing press regularly where he found the motion of the pages produced by the machines highly entertaining. He mentions on his Web site, . . . maybe I began to fall in love with print when I was just a few months old. Almond always knew he wanted to be a writer. ...

I am fascinated by big space… my aim is to make harmony and make it simple… My paintings reflect a change in my lifestyle: simple but rich.” – Lui Chun Kwong “Reality is in fact a scenery of fabrication.” – Almond Chu “I tend to photograph that which is familiar or close at hand, localities and situations where I am an inhabitant or participant rather than those to which I feel an outsider. I refuse the rhetoric of truthfulness and objectivity that photography of a documentary nature often claims, and deliberately produce images that declare a certain allegiance or reveal a specific personal viewpoint.” – David Clarke “My works are not in pursuance of fashion but in quest for the truth. I am not depicting the vividness of fashion but describing the depth of fashion” – Woody Lee

More Information David Almond has won the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children's Book of the year. His work has become very collectable and the early titles are both rare books and valuable as first editions. Collectors would seek out all of the books listed in this bibliography, even the later ones, although many would insist on signed copies of those. The first two books are short story collections and difficult to locate due to a very small print run from an obscure publisher. His third book and the first for children, Skellig, is the one which won him critical acclaim and the awards. Should be an interesting author to watch in terms of how the value of his books holds up, at the time of writing they are pretty strong.

Altar boys Davie and Geordie are well behaved only when adults are looking; their biggest problem is Mouldy, a threatening bully, or so they think. Then Stephen Rose comes to their small village in northern England, and Davie's world abruptly changes. Stephen is Stephen I, a strange and disturbed boy who creates beautiful sculptures out of clay. He convinces Davie that he can bring them to life, and that Davie can, too. The two work in an abandoned garden to form a golem golem [Heb.,=an undeveloped lump], in medieval Jewish legend, an automatonlike servant made of clay and given life by means of a charm, or shem [Heb.,=name, or the name of God]. Golems were attributed in Jewish legend to several rabbis in different European countries.

      • UK Sunday, 6 November 2005 In the last seven years, David Almond has won all the major childrens' fiction awards going in this country for startling, visionary novels such as Skellig, Kit's Wilderness and The Fire-Eaters. While the word "crossover" isn't heard as often in connection with Almond as it is with, say, Philip Pullman, his work is equally ambitious in its themes, and hailed as great fiction irrespective of the age of his readers. Yet for decades before all this success, Almond had toiled quietly at his craft, taking odd jobs as a postman or labourer to enable him to write, but with little to show for it, his single adult novel remaining unpublished.

    AUTHOR PROFILE
    David Almond
David Almond's debut children's novel 'Skellig' was published 1998. In the same year it won the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year and the Carnegie Medal. It was also shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction Award. His book 'Heaven Eyes', published by Hodder, was shortlisted for the 2000 Whitbread Book Award. His other books include 'Kit's Wilderness', 'Counting Stars and Other Stories', 'Secret Heart', a play 'Wild Boy, Wild Girl' and most recently 'The Fire-eaters'. David was born and grew up locally in a large Catholic family in a small steep town overlooking the River Tyne called Felling-on-Tyne. Of this town David says, "it was a place of ancient coal mines, dark terraced streets, strange shops, new estates and wild heather hills. Our lives were filled with mysterious and unexpected events, and the place and the people have given me many of my stories." For most of his writing career David was a teacher, firstly in a primary school, then as an adult literacy tutor, then as a teacher for children with learning difficulties. He went part time as a teacher in 1990 to spend more time on his writing.

Mrs Mad's humble opinion What's it about? Erin and her friends live in a home for children, running away is part of their lives, but this time their journey will be very different and lead them to Heaven Eyes. What happens? Whitegates is a children's home full of sadness, even Maureen who runs it seems lost and alone in the world. Erin fights the system unwilling to pretend she needs help. Her running away friend is January Carr, they often run away but this time January has built a raft and with little Mouse Gullane they sail off down the river. Stranded in the dark they are rescued on the Black Middens by Heaven Eyes and her Grampa. A strange little girl with webbed hands and a complete innocence of the world, looked after a mad old man. What is the strange story behind this odd couple and what will the three runaways do stranded out on the derelict island across the river. Is it easy to read?

He soons realizes that he is connected to the village's past more than just his own name carved in a list of people who died in the coal mine. He meets a boy his age named John Askew, an artist who insist that he and Kit are meet to be together, as John draws Kit's stories perfectly. Askew introduces a game called Death to Kit, a game in which the kids of the town pretend they are part of the coal mine and die like one of the lost children that died years ago in the mine. But it's just a game, right? David Almond gives a haunting visionary look of death and the past that follows it. He has such a prolific description of the town and settings involved that he makes you feel as if you been sucked in by the book. The in-depth characterization make Kit Waston, John Askew, and many other characters come to life. You can practically close your eyes and with Almond's description be able to see the mine, and the snowfall. You can feel the cool breeze and the snow crunch underneath your feet, or the smell the black soot of the coal mine and hear the ghost children laughing as they run through the mine.
