I listened to the gossip that filled Dragone's coffee shop. I ran with my friends through the open spaces and the narrow lanes. We scared each other with ghost stories told in fragile tents on dark nights. We promised never-ending friendship and whispered of the amazing journeys we'd take together. I sat with my grandfather in his allotment, held tiny Easter chicks in my hands while he smoked his pipe and the factory sirens wailed and larks yelled high above. I trembled at the images presented to us in church, at the awful threats and glorious promises made by black-clad priests with Irish voices. I scribbled stories and stitched them into little books. I disliked school and loved the library, a little square building in which I dreamed that books with my name on them would stand one day on the shelves.

Skellig
David Almond
Reviewer: Jill Murphy Michael’s life is turning upside down. His mother has just had a baby – a new sister for him. But she was an early baby, far too early, and she’s very, very ill. She’s is in and out of hospital and there is a great fear she might die. His mother and father are distraught and they’re living in a tense atmosphere of fear and worry. They’re a close family but it’s hard to keep it all together under such circumstances and sometimes Michael feels lonely and left out. Then he feels guilty for being so heartless. Making matters worse is that they’ve just moved house, right across town. Michael elected to stay at the same school but he needs to take a long bus ride to get there and he can’t just walk out of his house to join a football game with his friends any more. The house is in need of complete renovation too and it seems to Michael as though all his familiar comforts have deserted him. And then, one day, Michael goes into the derelict garage at the bottom of the garden. It’s an adventure – he’s not allowed down there at all for the structure is dangerously unstable and could collapse at any time. While he’s exploring Michael discovers another derelict – it’s a man living in the garage, feeding himself on the flies and spiders he finds within. It’s Skellig. Skellig begs him to tell no one that he’s there and instinctively Michael senses that there’s something strange, something special about this scruffy, ragged man and he keeps the secret from his parents. He tries to help Skellig, although he’s half afraid and half excited, bringing him medicine and food and drink.

Clay

Grades 7+ 256 pages Delacorte July 2006 Hardcover
When Stephen Rose moves to town, thirteen-year-old Davie's ordinary life is soon filled with things that are most certainly not ordinary. Davie, along with his best friend, Geordie, is a mischievous altar boy, warring with kids from the neighboring town, hanging out with his friends, and just starting to get attention from girls. In David Almond's Clay , Stephen Rose is a quiet boy just a bit older than Davie and Geordie. Father O'Mahoney asks Davie and Geordie to befriend this boy about whom rumors are already flying through town. The gossip about Stephen is not made any better by the fact that his aunt is a local woman known as Crazy Mary.
Stephen Rose has an interesting talent. He can take clay from the pond, and, with it, create fabulously life-like sculptures, when all the other boys can do concerning the arts is to laugh at their teacher and splash paint around. Stephen Rose is, from the start, quite obviously different.
While it might be smarter of Davie to not get involved with Stephen, he can't help but find himself intrigued by this boy so different from the rest of the people in Davie's small town. Davie finds out that Stephen's talent with clay is much more than it appears to be. Stephen has a gift that Davie has never seen beforeone he claims is in Davie as well: Stephen can bring the figures he creates from the clay to life. It is because of this talent and Davie's help that Clay is born.

Spotlight on David Almond Author You are going to be inspired by other writers and I believe there is nothing wrong with pinching an idea from time to time. Bestselling author David Almond is twice winner of the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year Award with first novel Skellig and The Fire-Eaters. Born in Newcastle, David also spent time in the library where he hoped one day to see his own books on the shelves in between dreaming of playing for Newcastle United. His other books include Kit's Wilderness, Heaven Eyes, Sacred Heart and Counting Stars. Blast spoke to David as he adapted his book Skellig into a stage play, which Trevor Nunn directed at the Young Vic Theatre in 2003. Han: I am a massive fan of yours and have read all of your books. I like the way you write in such an imaginative and deep way. If ever I need to get away from a problem in life I read one of your books. How do you come up with the ideas for your books like Kit's Wilderness as they are all kind of out of this world? David Almond : Kit's Wilderness began with lots of different images and memories, which I scribbled down and the story grew from there. The story grew out of all my fading memories of a fainting game that all the older boys in my school used to play. I used be very scared by it and I guess when I wrote the story it was my old fears re-appearing.

The Bottom Line
What starts out as an adventure turns into a lesson about loyalty, love and the real meaning of family. When you see the world through Heaven's eyes it will never look the same again. Pros
  • Erin Law's enduring bond with her dead mother. Friends that act more like family. A misfit child with a magical soul.
Cons
  • Child abuse in the form of a tattoo. The yucky Black Middens.
Description
  • Ordinary things are magical and regular people are ghostly presences to be avoided at all costs. A world of the imagination becomes reality with danger and mystery is everywhere.

Nesbit David Almond was born in Newcastle and grew up in a big Catholic family in the coal-mining town of Felling-on-Tyne with his brother and four sisters. His first book for children, Skellig was published in 1998. As a child, Almond loved playing football in the hills above the town and messing about with his grandfather in his allotment. He loved too the local library and dreamed of seeing his books on its shelves one day. Later he took a degree in English and American literature. After working for a while as a postman, a hotel porter and a labourer, he trained to be a teacher. When his first short stories began to be published in magazines, he left his job and began writing full time. He was still not writing for children. When he ran short of money he worked at writing booklets for an adult literacy scheme, and went on to his final teaching job in a school for children with learning difficulties. He says: Skellig , my first children's novel, came out of the blue, as if it had been waiting a long time to be told. It seemed to write itself. It took six months, was rapidly taken by Hodder Children's Books and has changed my life. By the time Skellig came out, I'd written my next children's novel
