Photo by Christopher Gardner Mother of the Spirits: Isabel Allende In her newest book, 'Paula,' novelist Isabel Allende searches for ancient meaning in the modern suffering of her daughter By Victor Perera "I am seeking God, but he seems to elude me," Isabel Allende's daughter Paula wrote her mother shortly before she suffered a seizure and fell into a coma from which she never recovered. The cause of Paula's illness was porphyria, an ancient and little-understood disease that Paula inherited from her father. Allende's latest book, Paula , which began as a letter to her daughter while Isabel sat vigil at her bedside in a Madrid hospital, evolved into a search of Isabel's ownif not for God, then for a reason to go on living after all her maternal love and will power failed to bring her comatose daughter back to the world of the living. By one of the coincidences that seem to shadow Isabel Allende in private life as well as in her writing, she was in Madrid to promote her novel The Infinite Plan the day Paula suffered violent seizures and sank into a coma. As in Greek tragedy or a fairy tale, the mother was summoned to her daughter's side on the eve of calamity, and she was not to be spared a scintilla of the fate that befell her daughter.

Isabel Allende was born in Lima, Peru, in 1942 and raised in Chile, Bolivia, Europe, and the Middle East, as her family followed her stepfather's diplomatic career. She worked as a journalist in Chile until the 1973 military coup. Allende fled her homeland, settling in Venezuela with her husband, son and daughter. "I felt, as many Chileans did, that my life had been cut into pieces, and that I had to start over again," she recalls. Isolated from her family, and in particular from her beloved grandfather who was close to death, Allende began to write a long letter in which she reassured him that he would always be kept alive in her memories. That letter grew into the HOUSE OF SPIRITS, a novel which chronicled four generations of a Chilean family against the backdrop of Chile's brutal history. The book became an international bestseller. In her newest book, MY INVENTED COUNTRY , Allende returns to the subject of the country she left so many decades ago. It is an exercise in memory and imagination, written she says "So that you can fall in love with Chile."

    About the Author
It was fifteen years ago that, Isabel Allende took the literary world by storm with the publication of The House of the Spirits, a novel which chronicled four generations of a Chilean family against the backdrop of Chile's brutal history. The Times of London heralded Allende as having "the rare ability to blend fantasy and legend with political fact and a well-plotted narrative to produce an enchanted world unlike anything else in contemporary fiction." The New York Times called the book "a unique achievement, both personal witness and possible allegory of the past, present and future of Latin America."
Allende followed her impressive debut with Of Love and Shadows Eva Luna The Stories of Eva Luna , and The Infinite Plan , all bestsellers around the world. Critical accolades have greeted the publication of each of Allende's books, which have commonly been cited for their compassion, imagination, humor and originality.

For three years I had been blocked, unable to write, with the feeling that the torrent of stories waiting to be told, which once had seemed inexhaustible, had dried up. Then one night I dreamed of four naked Indians emerging from the heart of South America carrying a large box, a gift for a conquistador. And as they crossed the jungles, rivers, mountains and villages, the box absorbed every sound, leaving the world in silence. The songs of the birds, the murmuring of the wind, human stories, all were swallowed up. I awakened with the conviction that I must go there to look for that voracious box, where perhaps I could find voices to nourish my inspiration. It took a year to realize that wondrous journey.

Walden Acquires Film Rights to a Trilogy by Isabel Allende

By LIA MILLER Published: January 16, 2006 Looking for the next blockbuster series on the model of "The Lord of the Rings" or the Harry Potter movies, Walden Media has bought the rights to a children's book trilogy by the Chilean author Isabel Allende, the company has announced. Walden Media, started in 2001, is perhaps best known as the co-producer with Walt Disney of the "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." The company, which specializes in adapting children's books for movies, is part of the Anschutz Film Group, owned by the oil billionaire Philip Anschutz. Ms. Allende, a vigorous advocate of women's rights with a socialist background, seems like an odd match for Mr. Anschutz, a supporter of conservative causes who has been explicit in his desire to make what he considers moral movies. Cary Granat, a founder and the chief executive of Walden, said that Mr. Anschutz did not intervene in the decision-making at Walden Media. He said that to the company, Ms. Allende "is like a rock star." Her trilogy, which is about a boy and his archaeologist grandmother and their adventures in the

Her books don't get edited, she says Latin lovers make lousy husbands and her daughter's pornographic letters are a great read. By Kaitlin Quistgaard Pages 1 Certainly, the Chilean writer, who stormed onto the literary scene nearly two decades ago with the magic realist hit "The House of the Spirits," does not stifle concupiscence. Her novels abound with secret basement love nests, illicit couples tiptoeing through snoring houses and aching for a hidden corner and the repeated rape of servant girls by a desirous patron. New York Times reviewer Michiko Kakutani derided Allende's most recent novel, "Daughter of Fortune," as a "bodice-ripper romance"; Allende says her readers were outraged that there wasn't more action. Going through her stream-of-consciousness, autobiographical writing, though, she's really not a sensationalist; she's just at ease with sexuality playful, spirited, unabashed. Maybe she is the quintessential Latin lover. I see her at a book reading and find that her compact 5-foot frame is graciously buttressed by curves like those you'd find on a New Age fertility goddess; her jovial eyes captivate the almost all-female crowd. She writes with abundance, never offering a quiet meal when a boisterous crowd can feast on "puff pastries, delicious vegetarian dishes, spongy tortillas and enormous cheeses from the countryside" (this while "fasting" during Holy Week). Common objects become animate beings, descriptions take on palpability; an aging boat, for example, is a ship "crisscrossed with ancient marine scars, a crust of mollusks on her matronly hips, exhausted joints moaned in the pounding seas."
