Isabel Allende Biography I sabel Allende is one of Latin America's foremost female writers. Through translation, her work has received acclaim in the United States as well. Allende was born in Lima, Peru in 1942, but returned to Chile with her father, a diplomat, at the age of three. Two years after her uncle, Chilean President Salvador Allende, was assassinated in 1973, she fled with her husband and children to Venezuela. She published her first novel, La casa de los espiritus The House of the Spirits ) in 1982, followed by De amor y de sombra Of Love and Shadows ) in 1984, Eva Luna in 1989, El plan infinitivo The Infinite Plan ) in 1991, as well as a collection of short stories, Cuentos de Eva Luna The Stories of Eva Luna ) in 1990. Allende writes in Spanish, combining sometimes harsh, realistic, and political fiction with the surreal in the tradition of magical realism. Feminism A llende is considered to be part of the Latin American feminist literary awakening. History and culture have influenced the way in which she writes about her experiences. Historically, female subordination is evident in every Latin American social institution, in large part due to the conception of the Virgin Marynurturing, passive, and sexually pureas the ideal woman. The political realm, therefore, is in role conflict with this image. In fact, there is the perception that women are passive to political issues, and vote merely out of civil duty. In her writing, Allende deals with politics, history, and social institutions in a way that is all but passive.

ISABEL ALLENDE
As you've traveled around the world and lived in and visited many different places, do you find that people treasure storytelling as a tradition? I don't think that people are aware of that. But we can't live without stories. We are all the time telling stories. We go to the movies because we love stories. We listen to the soap operas because we love stories, for no other reason. Sometimes I suspect that books as books will disappear, the form of a book, and reading will disappear, will be overcome by other media, probably images or sound, but storytelling won't disappear, because it is so important for humankind. Someone said that stories are to humankind what dreams are to individuals. If you don't dream, you go mad. You need to unclog the mind, to connect to your own unconscious, to the unconscious part of yourself. In the same way, humankind needs to connect with a myth, with the collective dreams and hopes and fears. And all that you get in stories.
Do dreams influence the stories that you've told? Do they have a relationship to your writing?

DANCING WITH ALLENDE
By Laura Evenson
Isabel Allende couldn't imagine her words being turned into dance until she saw Icelanders boogie to a Caribbean beat in a musical based on her novel "Eva Luna."
" When I saw these big Scandinavians dancing and singing this Caribbean story, I thought, "Well, if this can be done, anything can happen," she said with a laugh. Allende's writing has been transformed into another dance and theater work by Della Davidson Dance Theater." Night Stories: The Eva Luna project, first cycle". Conceived by San Francisco's choreographer and director Davidson, "Night Stories" is based on three pieces form Allende's collection "The stories of Eva Luna", which followed the novel. The trilogy combines dance, spoken and sung text in English and Spanish, and live music composed by Richard Marriott and performed by San Francisco's Club Foot Ensemble. Many works by the Chilean-born Allende have migrated in recent years to other media. Her novels "The House of Spirits" and "Of Love and Shadows" were turned into Hollywood movies. Brazilian television producers recently have expressed interest in doing a series based on "The House of Spirits"." A couple of producers are working on a film version of Eva Luna", Allende 55 said earlier this month during a break from work at her writing cottage in Sausalito. " I believe they've asked Antonio Scarmeta in Chile, who wrote the script for "Il Postino" and Laura Esquivel (author of "Like water for chocolate") to work on her script.

Biography of Isabel Allende (1942-)
Isabel Allende Isabel Allende was born in 1942 in Peru, although her ethnicity is Chilean. After her parents' divorce, Allende returned to Chile to complete her high school education. She married her first husband, Miguel Frias, in 1962 at the age of 20. Their daughter Paula was born a year later, during the time Allende spent in Europe working with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. Upon her return to Chile she began to establish herself as a journalist, writing for a women's magazine called Paula and a children's magazine called Mampato . During that time she also wrote for television shows and film documentaries. Allende gave birth to her son, Nicolas, in 1966. From 1971 to 1974 she expanded her writing resume to include the theater, publishing three plays in three years. At the same time Allende's writing career was gaining steam, her family life took an extreme turn. Allende's uncle, President Salvador Allende, committed suicide when his administration was overcome in a 1973 military coup. The author reluctantly fled to Caracas, Venezuela. As she recalled in one of her speeches: "I was the last one [of my family] to leave. I stayed until I couldn't stand it anymore." Although she never fell in love with the country, she became a long-time resident, writing for the newspaper El Nacional

        Biography - Criticism
Life before and life after the 1973 military coup-d’©tat in Chile marks the stark divide in Isabel Allende’s life. Allende is a world-renowned Latin American writer, known for the passion and folk-tale eloquence with which she shares her country with the world. She uses the power of the word as a tool to express her pain, anger, and love. Isabelle Allende was born in Lima, Peru on August 2, 1942. Her father, Tomas Allende, was a Chilean ambassador to Peru, and cousin of Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected socialist candidate in the world. Her mother was Francisca Llona, daughter of Isabel Barros Moreira and Augustin Llona Cuevas. Allende spent her early childhood in Peru and did not see Chile, her homeland, until she was four years old. Her father had abandoned the family and her mother was forced to move back to Chile with her three children. They lived in her maternal grandparents’ house in Santiago, Chile. With divorce illegal in Chile at the time, Allende’s mother obtained a legal separation only after Allende’s grandfather utilized his political status. Allende’s mother married a man named Ram³n Huidobro, also a diplomat, but could never legalize the union because of her previous marriage. Much of her childhood was spent in Bolivia and Lebanon.

She traveled, worked as a journalist, and wrote her books, "The House of the Spirits," "Of Love and Shadows," "Eva Luna," and "The Stories of Eva Luna." Her latest novel, "The Infinite Plan," is set, as is she, in Northern California. Q: You've lived all over the world and traveled extensively. Now that you've married an American and you live here, what do you find surprising about the United States? A: I realize that there is much more to it than I ever thought. It is a very complex societymultiracial, multicultural, with many languages. Americans have a warrior's mentality, most of them. That's how this society was built. The fact that you own a gun and shoot to defend your life is a very American way of thinking.

Though she claims to find interviews somewhat irksome and interruptive they keep her from the important work of writing, after all Isabel Allende proves to be a great interview. Disarmingly candid, Allende answers the briefest questions at length, considering each word carefully. She seems to weigh her sentences with a writer's scale: each word measured for impact, clarity and cadence. In fact, she is so clear when interviewed in English so well and carefully spoken that it's sometimes difficult to remember that Allende writes only in Spanish. Her work is then translated into almost as many languages as exist on the planet.
Since Allende's first book, The House of the Spirits, was published in Spain in 1982, her work has received international recognition. Born in Peru in 1942, Allende has been named author of the year or had one of her works named book of the year in Germany, Chile, Switzerland and Mexico. Allende herself has received honorary doctorates from Bates College, Dominican College, New York State University and Columbia College. She is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and was named Feminist of the Year by the Feminist Majority Foundation in 1994. I won't go on: suffice it to say that Allende must have a small room stuffed with trophies and certificates at the home she shares with her husband Willie in Marin County, California. And all of them written in a different language, or seeming to be.
