ISRAEL Window and Doors Because My Body Medical History Karen Alkalay-Gut doesn't do much changing. She's been teaching poetry at Tel Aviv University forever, and writing since her first publication at the age of 10 WINDOWS AND DOORS Top I Her house was another world: in the middle of our town on the way to the library the low porch, the ramshackle brick-sided abode, reeking smoked food from its chimney. They lived on the porch I thought - ate in the weedy brown yard, hung up white sheets to dry on the line from tree to tree. We hid our wash out back, sat sometimes on our rockers watching the street, but never

THIN LIPS - Karen Alkalay-Gut, Roy Yarkoni, Ishay Sommer - CD - Pookh Music - 2004 review by: Avi Shaked Two leading figures of the Israel progressive music scene, Roy Yarkoni and Ishay Sommer (both are also members of Ahvak), joined forces with poet Karen Alkalay-Gut, as well as a handful of guest musicians (percussionist Yatziv Caspi, who also records with Orphaned Land, contributes his skills to one track, and is an essential component of their live performance) resulting in one of the most refreshingly original and interesting recordings in recent memory. Alkalay-Gut performs her modern poetry convincingly and passionately, whether she is describing relationships and urges, everyday life or revisiting historical scenes. Her performance brings Laurie Anderson's performance art to mind, but the music found here is less minimalist than Anderson's music usually is, with nearly every track having its own distinctive voice and a suitable musical landscape that draw the spoken words. When Alkalay-Gut talks of the British Holborn Station, the ground shakes beneath you as metallic guitars roar, introducing a Rock In Opposition (a movement of modern progressive music)-inspired composition, with gentle vibes, quirky keyboards and giggling bass. Then, when she brings an amusing, unpopular perspective on a biblical story on "Joseph And I," the keyboards shed an Egyptian flavor, later supported by appropriate oriental percussion.

The letters that Jerusha Abbott, the protagonist of Jean Webster’s Daddy-Long-Legs , writes to her patron vary from being comical to earnest. In one letter, Jerusha writes: You never answered my question and it was very important. ARE YOU BALD? I have planned exactly what you look like—very satisfactorily—until I reach the top of your head and then I am stuck. I can’t decide whether you have white hair or black hair or sort of sprinkly gray hair or maybe none at all. Here is your portrait. But the problem is, shall I add some hair? And in another: Don’t you think I’d make an admirable voter if I had my rights?. . . This is an awfully wasteful country to throw away such an honest, educated, conscientious, intelligent citizen as I would be. In both tone and theme, Daddy-Long-Legs and Webster’s other works, such as When Patty Went to College and Dear Enemy , often reflected Webster’s peculiar mixture of whimsy and activism. A “shark at English” and a prolific writer, she was also a suffragist and an active advocate of social reform for orphans and prisons. Her fanciful and charming personality, renowned among her friends at Vassar, became more widely appreciated through the popularity of Daddy-Long-Legs , which appeared in1912 to wide acclaim and was later adapted for stage and screen.

    A Woman's Place:
    Literary Background for Glaspell's Trifles
Mikes Maillakais The nineteenth century saw the emergence of several prominent female literary figures, two of which included Kate Chopin and Fanny Fern. Like many other women writers, Chopin and Fern wrote about the inequality of the sexes and the inability of women to live their own lives without reliance on men; in this way, they helped pave the way for female writers of the twentieth century. Glaspell, who struggled with similar themes and concerns, inherited a rich legacy from these women. Indeed, when Susan Glaspell and her husband George Cook arrived in Greenwich Village in the middle of an artistic revival and renaissance, Glaspell began to write openly about these issues. In 1915, Cook, Glaspell and others started the Provincetown Players, a venue for American plays that where too experimental and controversial for Broadway. Female writers such as Chopin and Fern, and Glaspell’s involvement in the Provincetown Players, strongly influenced the creation of Glaspell’s play

Alice Jane Chandler Webster was born in Fredonia, New York . She was the eldest child of Annie Moffet Webster and Charles Luther Webster. She lived her early childhood in a strongly matriarchal and activist setting, with her great-grandmother, grandmother and mother all living under the same roof. Her great-grandmother worked on temperance issues and her grandmother on racial equality and women's suffrage Alice's mother was niece to Mark Twain , and her father was Twain's business manager and subsequently publisher of many of his books by Charles L. Webster Publishing, founded in 1884. Initially the business was successful, and when Alice was five the family moved to a large brownstone in New York , with a summer house in Long Island . However, the publishing company ran into difficulties, and increasingly the relationship with Mark Twain broke down. In 1888, her father had a breakdown and took a leave of absence, and the family moved back to Fredonia. He subsequently committed suicide in 1891 from a drug overdose.

RESOURCES FOR RESEARCH C HRISTINE A LICE C ORCOS The popular image of women lawyers is suddenly much in the news and the subject of scholarly writing. Apart from the fascination with Portia, who though she was a successful advocate was not a member of any bar, thoughtful portrayals of women lawyers are not much in evidence. As Ric Sheffield points out in his article On Film: A Social History of Women Lawyers in Popular Culture 1930 to 1970 , women lawyers are basically formulaic creatures. "The presence of women attorneys in American cinematic fare, while generally inauspicious, began and remained noteworthy, primarily for marketing purposes."
In an attempt to encourage further investigation, this essay presents materials and resources for exploring the image of female attorneys in popular culture. The interest in the portrayal of women attorneys in film follows upon the entrance of women in the legal profession in signficant numbers (and in many countries).
