The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri remains today one of the pillars upon which the European literary tradition has been built. Originally titled simply Commedia, Dante's masterpiece was written at the end of his life and finished just before his death in 1321. In an era of hand-copied manuscripts, it reached a large and appreciative audience quickly. By the year 1400, no fewer than 12 commentaries devoted to detailed expositions of its meaning had appeared to support the text. Giovanni Boccaccio wrote on the poet's life and in 1373-1374 delivered the first public lectures on Dante's Commedia. Source: uwm.edu Dante Alighieri is the greatest Italian of all times after the inventor of Pizza, Signor Anonimo, and the one who first added Pepperoni on it, Signor Silvio Berlusconi. Inspired by his father, the famous explorer Marco Polo, Dante explored the far east looking for new types of Pasta, but ended up in Hell. His travel diary was later found and published as The Divine Comedy. Thankfully, he was found 5 days later, and when he died, he went to Heaven. Source: uncyclopedia.org

Charles Eliot Norton. Divine Comedy in the 19th century, as well as this smaller work of the famous Italian poet. He was also on the first committee that awarded the Dante Prize. The Vita Nuova , or New Life The Essays and Notes that follow the translation of the work by Norton are often useful and readable as well, especially since they include a few translations by other early Italian poets that illustrate pre-Renaissance Italian literature nicely. The personal glimpse of the inner Dante, in his own words, that this work offers is the best to be found of this man. Divine Comedy a try. Almost, I say. Here is the most detailed account of the great love affair Dante and Beatrice by the man himself. This in itself is fascinating since like Petrarch and Laura, and Abelard and Heloise, these two are considered as examples of famous lovers. The details of the romance, told here, are quite different from the usual expectations aroused by such fame. Some of the poems are quite charming, the whole account of Beatrice is fascinating. Begin

    Centuries in Literature

D ante Alighieri (first name was Durante) was born in Florence in May or june of 1265. His father was a notary, established in the ranks of low-aristocracy. Dante's first studies were in rhetoric, grammar, philosophy and theology. He was a disciple of Brunetto Latini, who strongly influenced Dante's cultural growth. In his youth, he was a Stilnovo poet and had many friends among the other members of the Stilnovo Poetical School (especially Guido Cavalcanti). In 1285, he married Gemma Di Manetto Donati (they later had two sons and two daughters). Then, after the death of Bice di Folco Portinari, Dante began studying philosophy and theology in depth. He joined a Medical Corporation in 1295, which started him off in his political career. In 1300, his career culminated in his becoming priore (a governor of sorts).

    68. Renaissance Dante In Print (1472-1629)
An online exhibition of illuminated Renaissance editions of dante s Divine Comedy.
    http://www.nd.edu/~italnet/Dante/
THIS EXHIBITION presents Renaissance editions of Dante's Divine Comedy from the John A. Zahm, C.S.C. , Dante Collection at the University of Notre Dame , together with selected treasures from The Newberry Library . The Zahm collection ranks among the top Dante collections in North America. Purchased for the most part by Zahm in 1902 from the Italian Dantophile Giulio Acquaticci, the 15th- and 16th- century imprints presented here form the heart of Zahm's collection, which totals nearly 3,000 volumes, including rare editions and critical studies from the Renaissance to the present. The nine incunable editions and nearly complete series of 16th-century imprints featured in this exhibit constitute essential primary sources for both the history of Dante's reception during the Renaissance and the early history of the printed book. The concentrated Dante collection at Notre Dame is nicely complemented by the wide-ranging holdings of The Newberry Library in Renaissance literature and history, and especially for the history of printing and publishing. These two rich and varied collections have often been used by Dantists in the Midwest and from abroad. The complementarity of the collections is mirrored in the formal cooperation of Notre Dame and The Newberry Library through the consortium of The Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies, of which Notre Dame has been an active member since 1983. The exhibit was originally held at the Department of Special Collections, University Libraries, University of Notre Dame, October 15 - December 15, 1993 and the Newberry Library between 15 April - 15 June, 1994, and has been produced in expanded form for Internet publication by a collaboration between the William and Katherine
