Pp. 416 with notes, photographs and index. $27.95 (cloth). Chicago's Nelson Algren encountered in his city as much indifference as the bums in his novels found on the road. When Algren died in Sag Harbor, N.Y., in 1974 — he had hit the road himself for much of his life — Chicago changed the name of West Evergreen Street, in Algren's old neighborhood, to West Algren. But as Mike Royko documented in some powerful columns at the time (author Bettina Drew does not cite them), the residents rejected the hassle. They had never heard of Algren, and they wouldn't mess with a new address for some dead writer. So the name was changed back, and Nelson Algren disappeared from Chicago in death as in life. Drew knows almost all the facts of Algren's life, but she offers painfully little understanding ... In writing a book about the failed life —not a wild one, as the misapprehension of Algren's novel title A Walk on the Wild Side here implies — of this misplaced author, Drew, a New York English professor, took on something that she, like Algren, failed to get right. She had fabulous support: the help of Anne Geismar (her husband, Maxwell, had been Algren's best-known critic for many years) and Algren's friend Art Shay (his own book on Algren appeared in 1988): Algren's papers, collected at Ohio State University (not the first or last time Illinois libraries have failed to collect the work of Illinois writers): interviews with a galaxy of publishing cognoscenti: Algren's books; the critical literature written and published as she did her work (Algren is currently a growth industry, and the scholars are a friendly group). This was a book much anticipated by Algren's readers and publishers. It was bound to sell.

My favorite Christmas story is about swindlers, who are ten years old, as recounted by one who grew up to be a famous novelist.
On December 4, 1949, the Chicago Sunday Tribune published Merry Christmas, Mr. Mark, a remembrance by Nelson Algren. A gambler and drinker, Algren had just written The Man With the Golden Arm , compassionately telling the story of a Chicago morphine addict. That year he'd won the National Book Award, continued his affair with Simone de Beauvoir, and even met Jean-Paul Sartre.
But as the year ended, the 40-year-old novelist set down his memories of being a young boy braving the December snow of 71st Street to sell the Saturday Evening Blade at the intersection by the cemetery.
"We'd worked up any number of swindles there..."
And other swindles involved Chicago's famous wooden trolleys making their final stop by a nearby saloon.
"There was almost always some fool on the rear platform waiting for the Blade
Once one kid pulled that coughing routine and the mark got off the car and came back for his change, cough or no cough. He didn't care if the kid had TB. Some mark.
But while shaking down customers, the news boys discovered they could incorporate the end-of-the-year holiday.

INTERVIEWER: Did you ever feel that you should try heroin, in connection with writing a book about users?
ALGREN: No. No, I think you can do a thing like that best from a detached position.
INTERVIEWER: Were you ever put down by any of these [users] as an eavesdropper?
ALGREN: No, they were mostly amused by it. Oh, they thought it was a pretty funny way to make a living, but—well, one time, after the book came out, I was sitting in this place, and there were a couple of junkies sitting there, and this one guy was real proud of the book; he was trying to get this other guy to read it, and finally the other guy said he had read it, but be said, “You know it ain’t so, it ain’t like that.” There’s a part in the book where this guy takes a shot, and then he’s talking for about four pages. This guy says, “You know it ain’t like that, a guy takes a fix and he goes on the nod, I mean, you know that.” And the other guy says, “Well, on the other hand, if he really knew what he was talking about, he couldn’t write the book, he’d be out in the can.”

I wrote to the Nelson Algren Award last year, because I missed the deadline. I was searching the web and found the Nelson Award, but to submit before Feb 1, 06. Is this true have I missed another deadline? No one sent me any thing in the mail. My address is 250 N. Albert Ave. South Bend, IN 46619. I would like to know when the next deadline would be?
