Biography of Nelson Algren, 1909-1981
Nelson Algren (1909-1981) is most famous as the author of The Man with the Golden Arm, a novel which won the first National Book Award ever granted (1950). Algren's career spanned over five decades and included four other novels, three travel books, and several collections of short stories. (Songster-Burnett) His most productive years were 1940-1960 when four novels and a prose-poem, "Chicago: City on the Make," were published. The 50s were also the years of the McCarthy era. Algren was always politically engaged with the left, although he did not believe in rigid party alliances or unexamined allegiances. His friendship with Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, his later travels to Southesast Asia and the Far East, his continued concern about those oppressed by legal and political systems, were part of a lifetime commitment to observing and recording social processes in an implicitly political frame. Edwards's assessment of Nelson Algren's fiction relies largely on biography and ideology rather than on the works themselves. Edwards reviews the man and finds him wanting, in so doing providing a discussion of Algren's works that is, at best, inadequate. James T. Farrell called the critically acclaimed Never Come Morning "one of the most important American novels I have read," yet Edwards's analysis of this work focuses largely on the fact that Algren got the price of a stamp wrong. And Edwards never even mentions The Neon Wilderness , a story collection including two O'Henry Award winners, a Best American Short Story, and a number of widely anthologized pieces. His love/hate relationship with the city and his affinity with the disenfranchised of society are reflected in such works as Neon Wilderness The Man with the Golden Arm , for which he won the National Book Award in 1950, and Chicago: City on the Make Nelson Algren rarely strayed from the naturalistic, tough-talking style of writing that won the praises of writers such as Ernest Hemingway. The caustic tone, and cynical nature of Algren did not often make him a favorite of the critics or "literary establishment" of Chicago. The antagonism between Algren and the city establishment eventually turned him bitter toward Chicago, and led to his departure for New Jersey in 1975. It is particularly bittersweet that Algren died in Sag Harbor, New York in 1981 on the eve of his induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters - a time when his career could have enjoyed renewed interest on the part of readers and publishers alike. Biographical Sketch
Nelson Algren (1909-1981) was best known for The Man With the Golden Arm (1949), which won the first National Book Award, and A Walk on the Wild Side (1956), which was a re-writing of his less-successful first book, Somebody in Boots (1935). Algren grew up in a poor neighborhood of Chicago which influenced his writing and provided background for some of his books. His characters were typically the poorest of the poor, and in his prose he bitterly depicted the hostile environment such people find themselves in, unafraid to lay blame at the feet of the capitalist society which both gave rise to this hostility and insisted on glossing over it. In the 1960s and 1970s, Algren produced a number of less noteworthy anthologies, and fell back into journalism (as he had been trained), covering the Vietnam war. He also taught writing at numerous universities, lectured, and wrote book reviews. His last novel, The Devil's Stocking , was published posthumously in 1983.

Born in Detroit and named Nelson Ahlgren Abraham, he moved to Chicago with his parents at the age of three to live in a poor immigrant neighbourhood on the South Side. His mother was a candy-store owner and his father the son of a Swedish convert to Judaism.
Algren was educated in Chicago's public schools and went on to study journalism at the University of Illinois, graduating during the Great Depression in 1931. He went South to find work a trip which found him in 1933 living in a derelict petrol station where he wrote his first short story, "So Help Me".
Algren articulated the world of "drunks, pimps, prostitutes, freaks, drug addicts, prize fighters, corrupt politicians, and hoodlums". He is probably best known for his 1950 National Book Award winning The Man with the Golden Arm. Nonconformity, published in 1994, presents Algren's side of the debacle which became the making of the 1956 film adaptation of this book. Nonconformity also expresses the belief system behind Algren's writing and a call to writers to investigate the dark and represent the ignored.
Algren was linked to Simone de Beauvoir and they travelled to Latin America together in 1949. De Beauvior said of Algren:

ALGREN, Nelson (1909) American novelist, classed as a "Chicago realist". His earlier novels of Chicago's west-side slums had strong naturalist tendencies, and were influenced by Marxist thought. His finest work, The Man with the Golden Arm, about a drug addict, has greater psychological depth. Latterly he has written still vivid but more sentimental novels. Buy Books - For Sale

A Walk on the Wild Side
Author Info: Nelson Algren
Guest review by Zach Barnett Orrins review of The Man with the Golden Arm has gotten me to ask the question, "Must I agree with the authors politics to appreciate and value his or her writing?" But then I approach the stairwell of this speculation and find the Brothersjudd founder asleep with a die in his ear and I remember I live down the street in the house with the doors and windows. So, lets then take another look at Algren and his writing. First, whether you agree with a damn thing Algren says, you cant help but be blown away by his craft. His writing is a thing of raw, naked power. Having invested nights and nights in the back of a Chicago precinct listening to the patter of lies, confessions and delusions of the usual suspects, Algrens dialogue is a sweet and exacting science. There is a fight going on and he is the referee, and someone is being bloodied and he is not going to blow the whistle, not going to interfere, and you are waiting and thinking, "break it up ? why wont you break it up?" And then you look down and find your wallet is gone and youve been cut ? badly ? and it is your blood on the barroom floor. Neon Wilderness , his collection of short stories, is a testament to the development of this approach. And whereas Orrins take on
