Nelson Algren: A Collection of Critical Essays
Edited by Robert Ward About the Author
Robert Ward lectures in American literature at St. Martin’s College, Lancaster, UK. He earned his doctorate from the University of Leeds in 2001 and has research interests in American literature of the 1930s, writing from and about prisons, and memoir. He has given papers at local and international conferences, and written articles, in all of these areas.
Nelson Algren was one of the most important, though critically undervalued, American writers of his generation. But since his death in 1981, his major fictional writings and essays have increasingly attracted serious biographical and scholarly attention. This collection of eleven essays on Algren offers a diverse and lively range of theoretical and historical readings. These include discussions on Algren’s place in Chicago’s left-wing literary tradition, the aesthetic of American and European naturalism, and his reaction to, and reception in the Cold War milieu of the 1940s and 1950s. Consideration is also given to the ways in which paperback cover designs up to and during this Cold War period shaped the reception of Algren’s novels as pulp fiction. Algren’s words are further illuminated by theories of Walter Benjamin, and those associated with confinement, autobiography, post-colonialism, and the cultural politics of American carnival. The volume is supplemented by a piece that traces the birth and growth of the Algren archive at Ohio State University Libraries. In all, this book represents an important marker in Algren scholarship, and will also be of value to readers concerned with developments in American and European studies more generally.

Nelson Algren (1909-1981) - original name Nelson Ahlgren Abraham American author, who won the first National Book Award for fiction in 1950 for THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, later made into a film, starring Frank Sinatra. Chicago inspired Algren, as the writer James T. Farrell with whom he is often grouped, more than any other city. He depicted its drunks, pimps, prostitutes, freaks, drug addicts, prize-fighters, corrupt politicians, and hoodlums - the whole underside of urban life. Algren also published poems, essays, and short stories, the best of which include 'A Bottle of Milk for Mother' and 'How the Devil Came Down Division Street'. His trans-Atlantic love affair with the French writer Simone de Beauvoir lasted with intervals for 17 years and ended in bitter accusations. De Beauvoir dedicated her book The Mandarins to Algren, and kept his ring, but never left Jean-Paul Sartre, her life's companion, who was no good in bed. "The great strength of a fighting man is his pride. That was Young Rocco's strength in the rounds that followed. The boy called Kid Class couldn't keep him down. He was down in the fourth, twice in the fifth, and again in the seventh. In that round he stood with his back against the ropes, standing the boy off with his left in the seconds before the bell. He had the trick of looking impassive when he was hurt, and his face at the bell looked as impassive as a catcher's mitt."

Pg. 69: "The Man With the Golden Arm"
There is a strong case for Nelson Algren as The Great Illinois Novelist
So how does his The Man With the Golden Arm fare with the " page 69 test ?" I could think of no one better than Pete Anderson to put the questions to. Pete is a writer blogger , and Algren enthusiast. Here's what he reported.
Nelson Algren's The Man With the Golden Arm is set in a Polish slum on the Northwest Side of Chicago shortly after World War II and revolves around Frankie Machine, a poker dealer and combat veteran who brought home from the war a morphine addicti on that he fights an increasingly losing battle against. Frankie represents the forgotten underclass of our society, a scrapper who's trying to carve out as decent a life as he can with what little he's been given by a mostly indifferent establishment. But though he represents the underclass, Frankie's not just a symbolhe's a deep, finely-drawn individual, a fascinating mixture of optimism, humor, desperation and all-too-human weaknesses.
Page 69 of the novel contains a key component of the plot and also presents a concise microcosm of many of the novel's narrative and thematic elements. This scene recounts the events of one fateful night of several years earlier, when a drunken Frankie got into the car wreck which left his wife Sophie a physical invalid. (Or at least gave her the excuse to act as a physical invalidAlgren never makes it entirely clear whether Sophie was actually crippled, or if she merely pretended to be so, knowing it would bring Frankie enough guilt to keep Frankie around.) The scene is a turning point in Frankie's life, with the ensuing guilt keeping Frankie with Sophie long after their love died while also keeping him in Chicago long after he should have fled, escaping from the law. It also keeps him away from his neighbor girlfriend Molly, who might have otherwise been his salvation as the one woman he knew who could help him kick his addiction.
