"I could not be governor if I did not believe in a divine plan that supercedes all human plans."
"I believe God wants me to be president."
"I feel the comfort and the power of knowing that literally millions of Americans I'm never going to meet . . . say my name to the Almighty every day and ask him to help me . . . My friend, Jiang Zemin in China, has about a billion and a half folks, and I don't think he can say that. And my friend, Vladimir Putin, I like him, but he can't say that."
... no more of this "God Bless America" crap. What makes you think you get to be blessed and no one else does? I don't play favorites. You don't hear anyone in Djibouti saying "God Bless Djibouti." I have never heard anyone utter the words "God Bless Botswana." They know better. Let's get this straight- God don't bless America, God don't bless anyone, God has got a tee time on the back nine and he doesn't have time to be interrupted with this patriotic mumbo jumbo. Go bless yourselves and quit using My name as a justification for feeling superior to everyone else. You aren't. You are actually among the dumbest people on the planet. Don't think so? Name the president of Mexico. See? Ask anyone else in the world the name of the leader of the country next to theirs and they can tell you who it is. God bless America? More like God bleeps America.

The Dark Side of Horatio Alger, Jr.
Jessica Amanda Salmonson
The bordello was run by an old faggot who was something of a professional "spokesman" for homeless youths, occasionally seen on the television news expounding on the hardships of boys living in the streets. He'd gotten grants from the city to provide housing for some of these boys. So the city government was duped into paying the bordello's rent! It is the commonest thing that advocates for youth are "in it" for personal reasons of this very sort. All of which is leading to a discussion of the dark side of boys' books author Horatio Alger, Jr. Imply? or girls, whether the evil deed is performed by gay adults or straight adults. In this light it could be argued that Horatio Alger should have been permitted to write his books only from prison.

Horatio Alger
Horatio Alger, Jr. was the son of a Unitarian minister, but did not follow his father's wishes for him to join the clergy. Instead, he attended Harvard with the intent of becoming a poet, and later went on to become a teacher. After being rejected by the Union army during the Civil War, he changed his mind and became a minister. He wrote many poems and dime novels during his lifetime, many of which seem autobiographical both in their themes of pursuing the American dream, and in their talk of "deadly sins" - the truth of which was glossed over by the church at the time.

This exhibition originally ran in Rare Books and Special Collections in May 2004, in conjunction with "Dash to DeKalb II," the 2004 Conference of the Horatio Alger Society. Please note: this exhibition contains many large images, scanned from the original items in the exhibition. In most cases, the scanned images have been reduced in size to better fit the web format, and thus do not reflect the actual size of the originals. John Watson Davis (1870-1959) Photographer and date unknown. John Watson Davis. Courtesy of Georgetown University Art Collection . Washington, D.C. Gift of Margaret Williams, 2003. “John Watson Davis had a career for six decades as an illustrator; in addition to his religious commissions, his drawings appeared in Zane Grey novels, in editions of Sherlock Holmes tales and Bluebeard, and in other books and magazines. His father was John Steeple Davis, also a book illustrator. Born in New York, Davis moved with his family to Paris when he was ten years old, where he received his art training. This was a time when many artists from North America and elsewhere flocked to Paris, then the pre-eminent city for the visual arts, to study with masters in schools that emphasized rendering of the human form.

As President Bush cuts another tax, the latest on stock dividends, critics complain that it is one more blatant giveaway to the rich, but the outcry from the middle class and the poor has been, if anything, a whimper.
Even today, when all the facts argue against social mobility, popular culture hews to the same message, that America is a classless society.
