Dreiser's 'The Financier' and the Horatio Alger myth
Twentieth Century Literature Fall, 1998 by Alex Pitofsky Critical discussions of Theodore Dreiser's The Financier (1912) are often saturated with references to Horatio Alger. Robert Penn Warren, for example, once characterized the plot of The Financier as, among other things, an attempt to modernize "the Horatio Alger myth" (56).(1) The temptation to read Dreiser's chronicle of the rise, fall, and resurrection of a nineteenth-century street railway tycoon(2) as an updated version of Alger's narrative strategies is certainly understandable. Like Alger, Dreiser focuses on a young man who transforms ambition, work, and luck into material success. Moreover, as several critics have pointed out, "[i]t scarcely seems an accident that the name 'Alger' is absorbed into the name of [Dreiser's] hero - Frank Algernon Cowperwood" (Warren 56).

The son of a Unitarian minister, Horatio Alger was born on January 13, 1832, in what today is Revere, Massachusetts. As a boy, Alger was known for religious devotion, and when he entered Harvard College in 1848 it was assumed he would follow his father into the ministry. Apparently unhappy with work as a minister, Alger left on a long trip to Europe. He arranged to defray expenses by writing articles for the

President Bush Congratulates Winners of Horatio Alger Education Award The East Room 3:03 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. Welcome to the White House. Wayne, thank you very much for your kind remarks. It is a real honor for me to be here to congratulate the 105 national scholars, to thank the universities who are going to match the scholarship money that you all have raised, and to thank the award recipients and congratulate you for the example you've set for America. Before I begin, I want to say I've got a little news I'd like to report. I'm really pleased to report that the United States Senate, just moments ago, passed a budget that funds our nation's priorities and allows for over $1.2 trillion of meaningful, real tax relief for the American people. (Applause.) The House has already passed $1.6 trillion of tax relief. Now, the House and Senate will work to find common ground between these two budget plans. And the result will be the largest tax relief in decades. The fact that both Houses of Congress have committed to provide significant relief is good for the American people, and it's good for our economy.

    INTRODUCTION
    Biographical Information
Born in Revere, Massachusetts, Alger was the oldest child of a Unitarian preacher and his wife. When he was twelve, the family moved to Marlborough, Massachusetts, where he attended Gates Academy in preparation for admission to Harvard College. In 1853, after his graduation from Harvard, Alger entered Cambridge Divinity School but withdrew shortly afterwards in order to become an assistant editor for the Boston Daily Advertiser. He held this post until the spring of 1854, when he was hired to teach at a boarding school in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. After briefly serving as the principal of a boys' academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Alger reentered Cambridge Divinity School and was ordained a minister in 1861.

Content Books Getting Started With Horatio Alger Contacting Horatio Alger Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a 19th-century American author who wrote approximately 135 dime novels. Many of his works have been described as rags to riches stories, illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. This widely-held view involves a significant simplification, as Alger's characters do not typically achieve extreme wealth; rather they attain middle-class security, stability, and a solid reputation — that is, their efforts are rewarded with a place in society, not domination of it. He is noted as a significant figure in the history of American cultural and social ideals, even though his novels are rarely read these days. As bestsellers in their own time, Alger's books rivaled those of Mark Twain in popularity.

The speaker was a woman of middle age, not good looking, but nevertheless she looked good. She was dressed with extreme plainness, in a cheap calico; but though cheap, the dress was neat. The children she addressed were six in number, varying in age from fourteen to four. The oldest, Harry, the hero of the present story, was a broad-shouldered, sturdy boy, with a frank, open face, resolute, though good-natured.

Philip started in irrepressible astonishment as these words fell from the lips of his step-mother. It seemed to him as if the earth were crumbling beneath his feet, for he had felt no more certain of the existence of the universe than of his being the son of Gerald Brent.

"You went to the Old Bowery? Where'd you get your money?" asked the man, who was a porter in the employ of a firm doing business on Spruce Street. "Made it by shines, in course. My guardian don't allow me no money for theatres, so I have to earn it." Paul the Peddler The speaker, a boy of fourteen, stood in front of the shabby brick building, on Nassau street, which has served for many years as the New York post office. In front of him, as he stood with his back to the building, was a small basket, filled with ordinary letter envelopes, each labeled "Prize Package."
