ALGER'S DICK The Dictionary of American Biography calls Horatio Alger the "most successful writer of boys' stories in the whole of American literature." Before moving to New York City in 1866, Alger had been a Unitarian minister for two years. He'd also published several works of fiction. But none had anything like the success of Ragged Dick . This first of Alger's "rags to respectability" novels appeared serially in Student and Schoolmate , a monthly periodical that featured moral tales for youth. Alger's story began running in January, 1867, with the picture below as a kind of frontispiece. Before the last installment appeared in June, Ragged Dick had attracted so much attention that the Boston publisher A.K. Loring signed Alger to a contract that led, by the end of the century, to 118 other novels modeled on the same archetypal plot. As success stories Tom and Dick's adventures resemble each other only by contrast. The chapter below recounts Dick's first visit to a fashionable New York church, under the sponsorship of the second of his three male mentors. It is strikingly secular in its emphases, but not much like MT's chapter on Tom Sawyer in church. Of course, we shouldn't forget that in Sunday School Tom is tempted to fall down and worship the socially "elect" Judge Thatcher and curiously the idea of being "adopted" into "sivilization" by a rich patron whom one has aided is picked up in

Our purpose: To further the philosophy of Horatio Alger, Jr. and to encourage the spirit of Strive and Succeed that for half of a century guided Alger's undaunted heroes - lads whose struggles epitomized the great American dream and inspired hero ideals in countless millions of young Americans. The Horatio Alger Society (H.A.S.) was founded in 1961 by Forrest Campbell and Kenneth B. Butler. The H.A.S. was incorporated at Mendota, Illinois in 1965 as a non-profit (501(c)(3)) organization. The H.A.S. has evolved in its four-plus decades of existence as collectors interests have broadened. Originally a specialist organization for Alger collectors, the H.A.S. now embraces collectors and enthusiasts of all juvenile literature, including boys' and girls' series books, pulps, and dime novels.

The World Before Him (1880) was typical of these stories. In this selection, young Frank grabs the proverbial golden ring of success less by pluck than by sheer luck. Chapter 29 FRANK HEARS SOMETHING TO HIS ADVANTAGE Frank went out as usual after breakfast, and then walked leisurely down town. He proposed to go to the office of the Great Pekin Ten Company and resign his agency. He was on the watch during his walk for any opportunities to repair his unlucky loss. At one place he saw a notice: Boy Wanted. Though he felt sure the compensation would not be sufficient to allow of his accepting it, he thought it would do no harm to make inquiry, and accordingly entered. It was an extensive retail store, where a large number of clerks were employed. He pointed to a desk some distance back, and Frank went up to it. Frank thanked the polite proprietor and walked out of the store. Though this is a story written for boys, it may be read by some business men, who will allow me to suggest that a refusal kindly and considerately expressed loses half its bitterness, and often inspires hope, instead of discouragement. Frank proceeded to the office of the tea company and formally resigned his agency. He was told that he could resume it whenever he pleased.

Alger, Horatio, Jr. (1832-1899)
page: Long associated with the triumphant rags-to-riches story of young men who succeed financially by pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, Horatio Alger, Jr. created an enduring American myth. However, his life belied the myth that his writing inspired, and the revelation of his involvement in a pederastic scandal has caused his interest in adolescent boys to be viewed with suspicion. Alger authored more than one hundred juvenile novels, most of which featured adolescent boys, who were also his chief readers in the late nineteenth century. His formulaic plots rarely featured a young man who struck it rich independently. Rather, Alger's fiction presents a world in which destitute street urchins or poor farm boys in rural Eastern towns are befriended by older men who mentor them into middle-class respectability.
