Horatio Alger
Horatio Alger, Jr. (1834-99) was a prolific writer of dime novel stories for boys. From the debut of his first novel, Ragged Dick, in 1867, Alger was instrumental in establishing a new genre of dime novels known as the 'city story.' The genre arose out of the wide-spread urbanization that followed the Civil War and paralleled the rise of industrialism. Alger's stories heroicized the young street urchins living in poverty among large, urban centers such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. With uncommon courage and moral fortitude, Alger's youths struggle against adversity to achieve great wealth and acclaim. These rags to riches stories were enormously popular with the public and flourished in the decades from 1870 to 1890.
Alger's stories continued to be reprinted well after his death, as evidenced by this 1911 issue of Boy's Home Weekly. Alger's name appears twice on the cover, its prominence pointing to the author's continued popularity and the importance of a famous writer's reputation for increasing a publication's circulation.

Horatio Alger
Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832-July 18, 1899), briefly a Unitarian minister, was a popular nineteenth-century author of juvenile fiction. His "rags to riches" stories portrayed poor boys in America making good. Because Horatio, Jr. was near-sighted and had bronchial asthma, his father tutored him at home until he was ten. A good student, by the time he was eight he had started to study Latin and algebra. Although the family still lived in "genteel poverty" there was enough money for him to go to Gates Academy in Marlborough until he was fifteen. His instruction included mathematics, classics, and several modern languages. During this period some of his compositions were published in local newspapers. He attended Harvard, 1848-52, from which he graduated (A.B.) with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Addison Brown, a classmate, described him as "intelligent, faithful, industrious, and [a] quick scholar . . . with natural literary aptitudes." Alger worked the next several years as a teacher and journalist. He penned stories and poems for magazines. His first two books were

Massachusetts Occupation ... American Horatio Alger, Jr. January 13 July 18 ) was a 19th-century American author who wrote approximately 135 dime novels . Many of his works have been described as rags to riches stories, illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. This widely-held view involves a significant simplification, as Alger's characters do not typically achieve extreme wealth; rather they attain middle-class security, stability, and a solid reputation — that is, their efforts are rewarded with a place in society, not domination of it. He is noted as a significant figure in the history of American cultural and social ideals, even though his novels are rarely read these days. As bestsellers in their own time, Alger's books rivaled those of Mark Twain in popularity.

Horatio Alger Jr. (1832-1899) was a prolific American author of boy’s adventure stories whose heroes lead exemplary lives to Strive and Succeed in the face of adversity and poverty, good and evil. Horatio Alger Jr. was born on Friday the 13th of January, 1832 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the oldest of five children. He developed near-sightedness and asthma as a youngster, and wasn’t to excel academically till many years later. His mother, Olive (née Fenno) Alger, was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. His father, Horatio Alger Sr. earned his living as a Unitarian Minister, but supplemented his meagre ministerial income by becoming the first postmaster in town, tending a small farm and occasionally teaching grammar school. But the family never really got out of economic straits, whereupon they left the town in 1844 to go to Marlborough. It was here that Horatio entered prep school and started to excel with his studies. In 1848, sixteen year-old Horatio was accepted to Harvard University with financial assistance from his father’s cousin Cyrus Alger, and embarked on the happiest four years of his life. Studying under such illustrious teachers as

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard Divinity School in 1852. During the Harvard days he studied under renowned writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with the intention of one day becoming a poet.
In his twenties, he was rejected by the Union Army because of his asthma. His interests shifted him toward teaching as well as becoming a newspaper correspondent for the Boston Transcript and the New York Sun newspapers.
His religious training was tested over the years when he relocated to Paris. In 1864, he returned to America and became a Unitarian minister then later a social service worker in New York. It was in these ghettos where he first saw the plight of the poor and homeless.
From this witness of devastating poverty is where Alger developed his rags-to-riches theme for his soon to be popular books. He was to become the nineteenth century preacher on the gospel of success.

Biographies: The Lives of Horatio Alger, Jr.
The most trying aspect of studying the life of Horatio Alger is that the majority of his earliest biographies are at worst total fiction, and at best, relatively innocent borrowings from the worst. The difficulties facing the biographers are clear, and one can sympathize with such authors; for upon Alger's death in 1899, his sister Augusta, in accordance with his will, destroyed Alger's diary and all personal correspondence. Despite the dearth of primary information, several writers have tried in the century since his death to write the authoritative Alger biography, relying on fabrication inplace of exhaustive research. Thus, Alger's true life has remained an enigma. In fact, the history of the Alger biography nearly takes precedence over the man himself.
The initial perpetrator to this century of misrepresentation is Herbert Mayes, who in 1927 was contracted to write the first full biography of the author. After a few days of research, in which a lack of evidence and many close-lipped contemporaries of Alger confounded Mayes, he decided to write instead a parody of Alger that would resemble the tell-all scandal biographies of the time. As Mayes himself confessed later:
"Here was a project that with scant trouble that I felt I could handle in a matter of months or even weeks. All I had to do was come up with a fairy tale...the going was easy, particularly when I decided to quote copiously from Alger's diary. If Alger ever kept a diary, I knew nothing about it" (Mayes' commentary is drawn from "After Half a Century," an introduction to a reissue of his biography
