He spent his childhood in Malaga and he has lived in Madrid since 1909. Studied law at the University of Madrid and at the Madrid School of Economics. Beginning in 1925 he has completely devoted himself to literature. His first book of poems, Ambit , appeared in 1928. Since that date he has written and published a score of books. In 1933, he received the National Literary Prize for his work Destruction or Love . He spent the Civil War in the Republican zone. He fell ill and remained in Madrid at the end of the conflict, silenced by the new authorities for four years. In 1944, he published The Shadow of Paradise , still maintaining his independence of the established political situation. In 1950, he became a member of the Spanish Academy. His books and anthologies have been published up to the present day. The Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature for the totality of his work in 1977. Aleixandre has been called an existentialist, a mystic pantheist, and a neoromantic. Although Aleixandre did not consider himself an orthodox surrealist, Freudian subconscious associations and dreamlike images can been seen in his poems. Central motifs are erotic love, solitude, time, and death. "The poet, the truly determinative poet, is always a revealer; he is, essentially, a seer, a prophet. But his "prophecy" is of course not a prophecy about the future; for it may have to do with the past: it is a prophecy without time. Illuminator, aimer of light, chastiser of mankind, the poet is the possessor of a Sesame which in a mysterious way is, so to speak, the word of his destiny." (from Nobel Lecture After 1922 Aleixandre started to have serious problems with his health. In a few years he became semi-invalid. He retired to his father's house in the countryside and devoted himself entirely to writing. "Solitude and meditation gave me an awareness, a perspective which I have never lost: that of solidarity with the rest of mankind." Withdrawn and in delicate health, Aleixandre wrote secretly until his first poems were published by friends in 1926 in the magazine Revista de Occidente . The next year Aleixandre settled in a small villa on the northern outskirts of Madrid, where he spent the rest of his life.

España, Europa Poeta español. Biografía (Sevilla, 1898-Madrid, 1984) Poeta español. Perteneciente a la llamada Generación del 27, con la que compartía modelos literarios y una misma asimilación de las vanguardias, su obra poética es extensa y cubre toda su trayectoria vital. La recreación de un universo personal y visionario se articula sobre un juego de contrastes, de vida y muerte experimentada a través del amor y evocada mediante el paisaje, cuyo máximo exponente es La destrucción o el amor (1935). En esta línea se inscriben Pasión de la tierra (1935), poemas surrealistas en prosa, y Espadas como labios Sombra del paraíso (1944) representa el punto culminante de su posterior evolución poética, que coincide con la experiencia de la guerra civil, en la que Aleixandre incorpora a su mundo mítico una consideración del dolor y la muerte que se abaten sobre la humanidad. A los dos años es trasladado a Málaga, en donde transcurrió su niñez. A los doce años se fue a vivir a Madrid con su familia. Estudia derecho e intendencia mercantil en Madrid y ejerce la docencia en este campo en la Escuela Superior de Comercio de la misma ciudad. Fue miembro de la Real Academia Española a partir de 1949. Formó parte de los poetas denominados de la Generación del ’27, con García Lorca, Cernuda, Guillén, Salinas y otros. En 1934 obtuvo el Premio Nacional de España y en 1977, el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Delicado siempre de salud, muere en 1984. Su obra está muy influida por el surrealismo. En su poesía, consiguientemente, destacan metáforas visionarias, a veces con imágenes cósmicas, muy originales. Usa casi siempre el versolibrismo. He studied law and business management and from 1920 to 1922 taught commercial law. He became seriously ill in 1925 and during his convalescence wrote his first poems.
