Portsmouth is the scene of his semi-autobiographical novel, The Story of a Bad Boy (1870). After the publication of his first collection, The Bells (1855), he held various posts on N. P. Willis 's Evening Mirror and Home Journal, became a correspondent for the Tribune at the outbreak of the Civil War, and was managing editor (1862–65) of the Illustrated News . In 1865 began his permanent residence in Boston, the mecca of his ambition and home of the New England group of authors who were the objects of his lifelong veneration. He was editor of Every Saturday [The entire page is 444 words long]

Tom Bailey's room. PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - The Stawbery Banke Museum might present the only house museum in America that features a year 2000 restoration of a 1797 home to depict its appearance in 1850, as perceived by Colonial Revival Movement. The 1797 residence was built by William Stavers and later acquired by Thomas D. Bailey. From 1849 to 1852, Bailey's grandson, Thomas Bailey Aldrich spent his teen years living in the home. Aldrich moved to New York, and began a writing career in 1855. Upon his death five decades later, Aldrich's widow and friends planned a museum that recognized his career. On June 30, 1908 they opened this house as the Thomas Bailey Aldrich Memorial (a period term for museum), Portsmouth's first museum. Aldrich's formative years in Portsmouth profoundly impacted American literature. Writing serial installments for a magazine, he penned a novelette entitled The Story of a Bad Boy. The then-revolutionary work was a huge success, and it remains in print today. That book also inspired a friend and fellow writer to create an account of teen life entitled The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In addition to Mark Twain, Aldrich's circle of friends included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and William Dean Howells. He was the editor of Atlantic Monthly magazine from 1881 to 1890. As an adult, Aldrich had homes in Boston and Milton, Mass.

DR. DILLON TO EDWARD DELANEY, ESQ., AT THE PINES. NEAR RYE, N.H.
    August 8, 1872.
II. EDWARD DELANEY TO JOHN FLEMMING, WEST 38TH STREET, NEW YORK. August 9, 1872. My Dear Jack: I had a line from Dillon this morning, and was rejoiced to learn that your hurt is not so bad as reported. Like a certain personage, you are not so black and blue as you are painted. Dillon will put you on your pins again in two to three weeks, if you will only have patience and follow his counsels. Did you get my note of last Wednesday? I was greatly troubled when I heard of the accident. I wish I were a novelist. This old house, with its sanded floors and high wainscots, and its narrow windows looking out upon a cluster of pines that turn themselves into aeolian harps every time the wind blows, would be the place in which to write a summer romance. It should be a story with the odors of the forest and the breath of the sea in it. It should be a novel like one of that Russian fellow'swhat's his name?Tourguenieff, Turguenef, Turgenif, Toorguniff, Turgenjewnobody knows how to spell him. Yet I wonder if even a Liza or an Alexandra Paulovna could stir the heart of a man who has constant twinges in his leg. I wonder if one of our own Yankee girls of the best type, haughty and spirituelle, would be of any comfort to you in your present deplorable condition. If I thought so, I would hasten down to the Surf House and catch one for you; or, better still, I would find you one over the way.
