Old Friends After three years Aldrich "had become known as a writer of graceful, sentimental, and ironical verse and had gathered enough work to make a volume which appeared under the title of The Bells " (Parker). At age nineteen, Aldrich was able to resign his clerkship and take up the position of junior literary critic for the Evening Mirror . That same year, he left the Mirror and took an editorial position at N. P. Willis's Home Journal . Among the Pfaffians, Aldrich was closest to William Winter, with whom he maintained a long friendship, even dedicating a poem to him in the Home Journal . Aldrich and Winter shared "a love of beauty and sentiment, and a strong moral bent" (Miller 73). When Henry Clapp, Jr. formed the Saturday Press in 1858, Aldrich became an associate editor and regular contributor (Miller 26). However, Ferris Greenslet notes that he never lost his reserved nature: "despite his close friendship with many of the men, Aldrich never went very far with the self-conscious Bohemianism that, transplanted from its native Paris soil, put forth few blossoms of other than dubious fragrance. He was an occasional attendant at the compotations at Pfaff's celebrated resort in the basement of 647 Broadway. But there is plenty of evidence that he was usually glad to escape to the quiet of his little hall-room. There was a kind of critical reserve at the root of his temperament that made noisy and promiscuous hilarity distasteful to him" (41).

Thomas Bailey Aldrich From: PGDIDI@ I have a copy of "Memory" on letterhead stationary of the Editorial Office of The Atlantic Monthly, Boston, handwritten and signed by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. It came by way of a gift to a family friend and has since passed on to me. The first time I read it I was sure he had walked amongst the pines of my California coastal home. The clock tower in town could have tolled the noon hour as he walked along the brook that slips down to the bay. The pines and wild tea roses grew along the sheltered pathway of that brooks edge. The pines still do, the tea roses are no more. Thomas Aldrich will keep them there forever.

(BORN, 1836.) A RIVERMOUTH ROMANCE. I. née Callaghan, issued from the small, dingy house by the river, and regained the door-step of the Bilkins mansion in the same stealthy fashion in which she had left it. had comether Mrs. Bilkins swept across the hall, and opened the door with a jerk. The suddenness of the movement was apparently not anticipated by the person outside, who, with one arm stretched feebly towards the receding knocker, tilted gently forward, and rested both hands on the threshold in an attitude which was probably common enough with our ancestors of the Simian period, but could never have been considered graceful. By an effort that testified to the excellent condition of his muscles, the person instantly righted himself, and stood swaying unsteadily on his toes and heels, and smiling rather vaguely on Mrs. Bilkins. It was a slightly-built but well-knitted young fellow, in the not unpicturesque garb of our marine service. His woollen cap, pitched forward at an acute angle with his nose, showed the back part of a head thatched with short yellow hair, which had broken into innumerable curls of painful tightness. On his ruddy cheeks a sparse, sandy beard was making a timid début The man was a total stranger to Mrs. Bilkins but the instant she caught sight of the double white anchors embroidered on the lapels of his jacket, she unhesitatingly threw back the door, which with great presence of mind she had partly closed.

ALDRICH'S TOM Thomas Bailey Aldrich's Story of a Bad Boy first appeared serially, in 1869 in Our Young Folks magazine. The "bad boy" is named Tom Bailey, and is, as Alrich's adult narrator says at the outset, "not such a very bad, but a pretty bad boy." The title makes it clear that Aldrich, like MT, intends his story as a kind of counter-narrative: neither Tom is a "model boy." Aldrich's book is an account of his childhood in "Rivermouth," New Hampshire, and focuses on various adventures as remembered and retold by the man he grew into. I picked the selection below because it helps suggest how much a fiction like this one, or Tom Sawyer , or even Little Women , although ostensibly written for children, appeals to the generation of contemporary grown ups as an act of nostalgia. Here, as the narrator describes heroism in combat, what is obviously being evoked and nostalgically elided at the same time is the Civil War (which was when Americans learned to read "order of battle maps" like the one Aldrich includes). In the simpler times being remembered, young men from the "North" and "South" fight bravely and no one dies or is permanently disfigured. Neither Bailey nor MT fought in the War, but I'm sure their accounts of ante-bellum innocence helped contemporaries struggling to digest the trauma of the War.
