  • Brian W(ilson) Aldiss 1925-
(Has also written under pseudonyms of Peter Pica and C. C. Shackleton) English short story writer, novelist, critic, historian, editor, autobiographer, nonfiction writer, travel writer, and poet.
    INTRODUCTION
An author who has experimented with a variety of literary forms and styles throughout his career, Aldiss is best known as a prolific and popular author and critic of contemporary science fiction. His major contribution to the science fiction field has been to develop a more thoughtful and humane literature that challenges the standard assumptions and beliefs of its audience. In his fiction Aldiss usually focuses on perceptual ambiguities, dualities, and paradoxes not generally addressed by other science fiction authors. Although some critics consider Aldiss's stories pedantic and his characters unconvincing, he is generally praised for his confident, energetic style and the depth and scope of his ideas. Aldiss is also regarded as an observant critic of the science fiction genre, and has published numerous essays, reviews, and columns both under his own name and under the pseudonym of C. C. Shackleton. His Billion Year Spree: The History of Science Fiction (1973) is considered a definitive study of the genre, serving as both an introduction to the field and as a reference volume for enthusiasts.

Brian W. Aldiss was born in 1925 in the UK. He grew up in rural Norfolk and Devon, the son of a department store owner. He served 3 years in Burma and Asia with the Forgotten Army. This part of the world was later to become quite influential on his work. Having played a seminal role in SF's New Wave in the 60s, he is now considered by many to be the elder statesman of UK SF. Non-Stop ... The Twinkling of an Eye, or, My Life as an Englishman
    A review by Rich Horton
Advertisement Another player in the happily growing list of publishers' reissuing classic SF appears to be House of Stratus, a London imprint that is putting out nice looking large sized paperback editions of a number of SFWA Grand Master Brian Aldiss' books (including some SF, some mainstream, and some non-fiction entries, all the better for a writer of such range). One of these is Hothouse . This is credited on the cover with having received the 1962 Hugo Award for Best Novel, which is not true. Rather, five stories which make up the book were published separately in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1961, and they were collectively awarded the 1962 Hugo Award for Best Short Fiction. However, taken together they read as a well-unified novel, a better "fixup" than many other SF novels based on series of short stories. And taken together, they are of Hugo Award quality, in my opinion. (And as I had not previously read the whole book, only one of the short stories in some anthology or other, I can happily eliminate another lacuna in my Hugo Award reading.) (Incidentally, the U.S. edition of this book was previously called

    Greybeard by Brian W. Aldiss
After watching the film of Children of Men *, I didn't go back to P.D. James's originating novel , which I've never read, but farther back, to Brian Aldiss's Greybeard , first published in 1964, a novel I last read somewhere between ten and fifteen years ago.
I went back to Greybeard because other than remembering that it is about a future Earth where humans are infertile, I had no memory of its incidents or characters, only a vague recollection of the book's tone and affect, which I remembered as being like a soft, pastoral requiem immensely lyrical, unbearably and unrelievedly sad.
That is somewhat accurate it is a sad book, indeed but it's not as lushly lyrical as I remembered, not as devoid of incident, not as rich, and not as bleak. Worst of all, I remembered a tragic ending, which is inaccurate. The ending is not one that is full of hope or affirmation, but it's hardly King Lear . (Would I have preferred it to be more tragic? No. More elegiacal, perhaps.)

Readers of THE HAND-REARED BOY will have no difficulty in remembering its hero, Horatio Stubbs. The time is now the early 1940's, and Horatio is soldiering in the Royal Mendip Borders. In due course his regiment is dispatched overseas to India to become part of the unforgettable Forgooten Army. The Genttee skirmishes for women in the United Kingdom intensify into a desperate running battle to cope with the urgencies of randiness. Eventually the regiment is posted to the Burmese front and plunged into the battle of Kohima in the mountains of Assam. During the campaigns against the Japanese, the troops partake in varius riotous sexual escapades with whores, ponces and gobble-wallahs. Brian Aldiss Shows us, through the eyes of Horatio and his friends, the far off days of the forties exactly as they were - Heroic, Bawdy or Downright bloody unspeakable. Corgi 222 pages.
