Alberti published his first books of poetry towards the end of the Marinero en tierra ('Sailor on Dry Land', La Amante ('The Mistress', ) and El alba del alhel ('The Dawn of the Wallflower', ). This early work fell broadly into the Cancionero tradition, though from a markedly avant-garde perspective. After falling in with the other members of the Generation of '27 , Alberti began to show the profound influence of Luis de G³ngora on his work, most obviously in Cal y canto ('Quicklime and Plainsong', ). It was, however, the introspective surrealism of Sobre los ¡ngeles ('Concerning the Angels', ), whose tone was perhaps anticipated by some of the more sombre moments of Cal y canto , that established Alberti as a mature poet. Sobre los ¡ngeles is widely considered to be Alberti's best work. During the Alberti's work became overtly political, beginning with

    b. 1902 - 1999
Rafael Alberti, the well-known poet of the Generation of 1927, began his artistic life as a painter identified with the main Avant-garde tendencies of the first quarter of the twentieth century, abstract painting, cubism, and surrealism. Alberti commenced his painting studies in 1917 when his family moved to Madrid from Puerto de Santa María, Spain. In 1922 his early works were exhibited at the Atheneum (Ateneo) in Madrid. His paintings from this period filled space entirely with an anomalous mixture of anxiety and order in an unstable equilibrium. Forced to leave Madrid for the Sierra de Guadarrama to recuperate from tuberculosis, Alberti put painting aside and began writing poetry. In 1925 he published Marinero en Tierra (Landlocked Sailor). His best known poem collections followed soon after, Cal y Canto (Passion and Form, 1927) and Sobre los ángeles (Concerning the Angels, 1928). At this time he was closely associated with Federico García Lorca, Juan Gris, Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, Vicente Aleixandre and other artists and writers who had the unique opportunity to bring to the political arena many of their artistic ideas. In the 1930's Alberti, devoted his talents entirely to the Republic, even after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936. Remembering this period, Alberti´s play

Alberti was born (1903) in Puerto de Santa María, a small town across from Cádiz. He was the last surviving member of the Generation of 1927 , which included his friend and rival, Lorca, as well as Aleixandre, Salinas, Guillén and Cernuda.. Alberti's initial calling was art, and he even released a collection of poems ( A La Pintura, 1950 ) devoted to this subject. His early poetry was strongly influenced by Andalusían folksong and included Marinero en Tierra (A Sailor On Land, 1924), which was generally light-hearted and uplifting. In contrast, his best known work, Sobre Los Ángeles (Concerning the Angels, 1929) is a surrealist work utilizing various Angels as allegory for forces in the real world. The tone is quite tragic and intimate and Alberti notably makes no mention of his beloved Andalusia, as in earlier collections. Deception is included within this collection and illustrates these themes. Although Alberti won a Spanish literary prize in 1925, he was exiled following the Spanish Civil War due to his ardent support of the Republicans. Alberti was not initially a political poet, but eventually devoted himself completely to this cause, even reciting poems to Republic troops to improve their morale. His exile took him to Argentina, where he published

Washington Irving People - Rafael Alberti Rafael Alberti was born in Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz in 1902. Prior to his being known for his writing, he was a highly competent painter. In 1925, however, Alberti received the necessary motivation to concentrate on his writing when he gained the National Literature Prize in Spain for his acclaimed work, " Marinero en Tierro ". In 1932, he joined the Communist Party and was forced into exile. When the war ended and after the death of Franco, Alberti returned to Spain. The writer's work incorporated the new avant-garde school of literature, which is particularly evident in " Cal y Canto " which was written in 1927. " Sobre los Angeles " written just a year later, is generally considered to be Alberti´s most significant work, recounting the optimism of youth in a chaotic and depressing world and is a vivid reflection of Alberti´s own state of mind at the time. In 1931 his commitment to social problems really took hold as evidenced by the following quote: " before, my poetry was only accessible to a few but this is no longer the case. What urges me to write today is the same motivation that moves workmen and workers in the field, I am driven by reasons of revolution.
