RASHMON AND OTHER STORIES (1915)
(Original Story written by Akutagawa Ryunosuke) Gina Barresi
Great Neck North High School, New York Type of work:
Short story Grade levels:
This work is suitable for all grade levels, although it would work better with 11th and 12th graders because it is a highly conceptual piece. It can be used in literature, psychology, and social studies classes, as Akutagawa leaves the reader to struggle to understand the motivations of the characters. Summary:
Rashomon and Other Stories contain six brief and highly readable stories. "In a Grove" presents a crime from five perspectives. "Rashomon" is an eerie tale of a desperate old woman surviving by pilfering the hair of corpses. "Yam Gruel" has pathetic central character whose single ambition is to eat his fill of yam gruel. "The Martyr" tells a tale of virtue and renunciation." Mesa and Merritt" deals with questions of perception, infatuation and love. "The Dragon" questions the reliability of memory. For this lesson, however, I have provided questions and suggestions on his two most popular tales: "Rashomon" and "In a Grove." Bibliography and filmography:

Rashōmon (1950), which in turn was adapted for the American film, The Outrage (1964), directed by Martin Ritt, starring Paul Newman, Claire Bloom, Edward G. Robinson and William, the Kirk, Shatner. Akutagawa (1892-1927), more so than many of his contemporaries was heavily influenced by the styles and fictional techniques of Western writers like Poe, Baudelair, Strindberg, Dostoevsky, and Flaubert. He was, by all accounts, a perfectionist in his style and had a great affinity, like the French Symbolists he admired, for descriptions of physical sensations. He was part of a growing literary movement that centered on the magazine Shin Shicho (New Current of Thought) and was concerned with undermining the influence of the romanticists and aesthetes who were the rage in the early decades of 20th century Japanese fiction. With his contemporaries, Kikuchi Kan and Yamamoto Yuzo, he shared the mission of replacing emotion with reason. Their philosophy simply stated was that the writer should not be overly influenced by either beauty or idealism. It was a recognition of the actuality of the human condition, and the tale in question was to be recorded by the author with a detachment that disallowed emotional aggrandizement or the injection of unwarranted pathos.

Literature Background Information. In strict terms, the "Taishô period" refers only to the brief reign of the Taishô Emperor between 1912 and 1925. Much as "Meiji" often refers to a period of reform and social change that began before the Meiji Restoration, however, "Taishô" often is shorthand in discussions of Japanese culture and history for a period of democracy and flourishing popular culture that began in the 1910s and lasted until around 1930. During this era, after the Meiji reforms and before military factions began to exert heavy power over politics and culture, political parties had the balance of power, and mass audience magazines, recorded music, and films propelled a cultural exuberance that American scholars sometimes compare to the Roaring Twenties. (Some signs of the role of mass media in popular culture can be found in the lesson in the references to songs and films in Hayashi Fumiko's Diary of a Vagabond In literature, new currents appeared alongside the currents of realism seen in the work of Kunikida Doppo and Natsume Sôseki and the personal fictions of "I-novelists." The new currents included modernist experimentation and leftist writing—"Proletarian Literature"—intended to foment a revolution in Japan on the model of the recent revolution in Russia. Although writers of Proletarian Literature tended toward socialist realism, and the modernists toward experiments in language and form, they shared an acute awareness of literary developments outside of Japan. Their sensibility was not entirely new: Doppo, as noted in the lesson

Rashomon and Other Stories* - Akutagawa Ryūnosuke
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashomon_%28short_story%29 - Akutagawa is known as "the father of the Japanese short story." This collection, first published in 1915, included about eight different stories, all exploring the darker side of life and the difficult choices people are often forced to make. Akira Kurosawa made the film "Rashomon" based on a number of Akutagawa's over 150 short stories. I've been shocked in this month's exploration of Japanese writers to encounter so many stories with haunting and disturbing themes. I'm not sure what I expected, but everything has left me feeling depressed and contemplating the meaning of life and the good/evil of human nature. Akutagawa's stories are short and the entire collection could easily be read in one sitting - but I think it would be a mistake to do this. It's simply too much to take in all at once.

Akutagawa Ryûnosuke's "The Spider Thread":
Translation and Commentary
By Timothy M. Kelly
Opening Remarks As a university student struggling with the study of Japanese language and culture I first became acquainted with the short stories of Akutagawa Ryûnosuke. Among his many stories I am particularly fond of "The Spider's Thread." My interest in it is twofold: as a reader, my intrigue lies in the story's imagery and parable-like quality; on the other hand, as a translator this short and seemingly straightforward story has provided me with a number of interesting problems. In the years that have passed since first translating this story as a student I have occasionally tinkered with it, but for one reason or another always put it aside. The translation prepared for publication here bears a resemblance to my previous efforts, but has been greatly reworked. Although the translation may be read without them, I have appended several footnotes with the aim of justifying my choice to leave several terms in the original Japanese. In the commentary following the translation I discuss the background of "The Spider's Thread," Akutagawa's sources of inspiration, and finally, argue against what might be called the common sense or Buddhist reading of the story. I It so happens that one day the Lord Buddha is strolling alone on the shore of the lotus pond in Paradise. All the lotus blossoms blooming in the pond are globes of the whitest white and from the golden stamen in the center of each an indescribably pleasant fragrance issues forth abidingly over the adjacent area. Day is just dawning in Paradise.
